Today the state attorney general ordered the Catholic Diocese in San Francisco, san jose, and several other cities to turn over new documents related to sexual abuse by priests. The diocese had already been providing some documents, but the subpoenas will allow the church to release those that previously may have been held back over privacy concerns. It comes months after several church abuse survivor groups pleaded for the states attorney general to launch an investigation similar to that jury probe that documented decades of abuse and coverups by priests in pennsylvania. Today snap, the Survivors Network of those abused by priests called this a key step in giving abuse survivors a voice. What happened to us as children, we are now adults. And we can empower ourselves by coming out and speaking up. The focus of the subpoenas is on the catholic church, but the attorney general is accepting reports of all different types of clench. The diocese of san jose declined an interview with us, but provided statements saying they have already provided more than a thousand documents, and will continue to cooperate. In light of the subpoenas, s. N. A. P. Is now encouraging more abuse survivors to come forward. Well, San Francisco is a given, but how about oakland . A new Housing Survey finds people who live in oakland pay the second highest rent in the bay area. Real estate site dumper cite several new highrise buildings for the increase. Those New Buildings can charge more, and the median price in oakland now more than 2400 a month for a one bedroom. Only San Francisco people in San Francisco pay higher rent. Oaklands surge of New Buildings dropped san jose down to the third most expensive city in the bay area. How about this idea . A cruise ship, a big one, to house the homeless . An oakland Security Council member is trying to make this a reality, but today the port of oakland says not everyone is on board. Melissa colorado joins us at the port with the details. Melissa . Reporter raj, it is certainly an interesting idea, but can it actually happen . A spokesperson for the port of oakland says they respect the councilmembers intentions, but they say this port is designed to take in cargo ships, not cruises. Were talking about a very industrial part of town. And the spokesperson says the infrastructure is just not there to safely house people. At last nights oakland Security Council meeting, Council PresidentRebecca Caplan brought up an idea she first mentioned last week about using a cruise ship as emergency housing for Homeless People. Caplan said someone associated with a cruise ship has reached out to her, and now caplan is working to get city staff involved. Caplan says if all goes well, one thousand Homeless People could get emergency housing quickly of we have went to a homeless encampment underneath an interstate ramp in oakland, and people there tell us an Emergency Shelter that floats isnt going to work. Sometimes the words we speak can and do come true, and maybe we can have a way to create a thousand Housing Units overnight with a cruise ship. Okay. Interesting idea indeed. If oakland is not available here, any other local waterways report any other options here, melissa . Well, raj, that is going to be the biggest hurdle for councilmember Rebecca Caplan. Assuming she does find an available cruise ship that would be available for the homeless, there is a port of San Francisco, which every year they host about 80 cruises. We reached out to them to see if the city of oakland has reached out to the port of San Francisco and we have not heard back. Thank you. Melissa colorado reporting for us in oakland. Up next, a father and his baby killed because of fentanyl. The feds charge three while pointing a finger at a bay area city. Also leaving because of the dirty streets. San franciscos mayor reacts to losing out on millions of dollars because of our citys big problems. And storm ranger shows rain moving into parts of the bay area. Ill put a track on this, and ill tell you what you should be watching out for tomorrow morning. Youre going to want to stay around for this update. Its in about seven minutes. Three men are now facing federal charges in the fentanyl overdose death of a santa rosa father and his 13monthold baby. Federal prosecutors say the fentanyl came from San Franciscos tenderloin and may be linked to a honduran drug pipeline. Christie smith joins news the city where federal prosecutors laid out these charges and some criticism of a San Francisco law. Christie . Reporter well, federal investigators say these are among the most tragic circumstances theyve seen. Now as you said, three people have been charged related to drugs obtained in the tenderloin and then sold in the north bay. This case is both uniquely horrible and at the same time also sadly commonplace. Reporter today federal prosecutors formally charge three santa rosa residents with distributing the fentanyl that killed a 29yearold father and his baby son in santa rosa. That 1 5 gram quantity of fentanyl is many, many, potentially adult lethal doses. Reporter prosecutors say it began with a 125 drug deal between the defendants to the father. This morning investigators used a map to show how far drugs from the streets of San Francisco can reach. The drugs in this case originated here in the tenderloin. And i have grave concerns about the existence of an open air drug market in a wonderful city like San Francisco. Reporter federal investigators say they continue a crackdown meant to curb the flow of drugs moving in through the countrys southern border, but they also pointed out the citys sanctuary policy and lack of sfpd involvement in the joint Terrorism Task force as challenges. We are open to collaborating and working with his office and potentially participating in the joint terrorist task force, but we want to make sure that we arent violating peoples civil liberties. U. S. Attorney i think does have a role, even where we have differences. San francisco has been a sanctuary city for a long time. Were going continue to. We think that actually keeps our community safer. Reporter also, supervisor matt heaney here at city hall is going to be holding a hearing on what he is calling a Public Health crisis that is planned for tomorrow. And if convicted, these three face up to 20 years in prison. Reporting live in San Francisco, christie smith, nbc bay area news. Christie, thank you. Another round of job cuts for a south bay carmaker. Neo usa announced its cutting 140 jobs at its San Jose Office beginning in february. Back in october, the company laid off 60 employees. Nio is the chinesebased electric car company, but its usa headquarters are in san jose. Even though car sales have been up for nio, the Company Reported a loss of nearly 500 million last quarter. Well, this week San Francisco took a 64 million hit when oracle announced it was moving its massive open world conference to vegas. The tech giant says the city has become too pricey, too dirty to play host. Tonight it appears tourism officials are bouncing back. Nbc bay areas robert hand joins us from Moscone Center with more on the loss and what do they do to recoup . Well, one way, as you can see, there are certainly a lot of conversations going on around here. And the concerns raised by oracle did seem to register with some visitors, but apparently not enough to worry those in charge of tourism, including the mayor. I mean, from my perspective, its clear that they wanted to go to vegas. Reporter there are tens of thousands of visitors attending conventions in San Francisco today. Conventioneers we talked to heard about oracles decision to move open world, and many could relate to concerns over hotel rates and street conditions. Im staying out at the airport because homes are very expensive here from my perspective. I think that the one that bothers me the most is the cleanliness of the city. If it is not clean, people could get sick. Reporter the San Francisco travel association called oracles decision disappointing, but emphasized no other groups have called to cancel or even expressed similar concerns. In fact, quite the opposite. The dates that oracle were here in San Francisco are very popular dates. Were already talking to various groups who are interested in coming to San Francisco for the dates. Reporter mayor london breed agreed, saying she is optimistic about filling the void, but still called oracles decision sudden. People love coming here, despite what we know some of the challenges that exist. But we are working on it. Things are improving. Not Getting Better as fast as id like toth them to get, but San Franciscos a great place and people want to come here. Im kind of curious where they want to go, where theyre going to find clean streets and no Homeless People, right . Reporter theyre going las vegas. Okay, well. Now this certainly does seem to be reason for optimism. For perspective, open world brings about 50,000 visitors, but from the people we interviewed today, theyre attending three separate conventions totalling about 75,000 attendees. So for a city like San Francisco absorbing a hit from oracle is special possible. Live in San Francisco, robert handa, nbc bay area news. Very good reporting. Thank you, robert.
