Missiles. About ten minutes ago all reporters saying that iran says if the u. S. Retaliaretaliates, will continue this offensive in other parts of the world, possibly dubi. Any countries that might align with the u. S. Will be punished as well. This is not the iran of the 1980s when they held americans hostage. They have some of the most sophisticated short range and Medium Range Missiles around. They have a new school of sophisticated drones that can take orders in mid flight. When were talking about attacks, forebget about the ide of troops moving over. So the ball is now clearly in the president s court and the issue is one of the things that people keep talking about is the fact that we have had such a deterioration of top people from the white house there that have the ability to manage this situation. Is that cause for concern that the president may not have the backup, the military and intelligence backup, to make the right decision . Yeah. We use the word institutional memory. These people have been there for 20, 30, 40 years working in the state department, the defense department. Weve seen a great deal of them leave during the trump administration. Some of them sent away, others have been retired. Also this president has wanted to cut back on the size of our bureaucracy. Some call it the deep state. Deep state is where you have all this knowledge. Those folks are largely gone. You have all these folks in cabinet positions acting secretary, acting under secretary. These folks dont have a lot of security under which to work. Does iran have the upper hand right now not only in terms of what theyve just done, but in terms of what the world is seeing happening in the middle east. The United States historically is sometimes viewed as the bully and when these things happen thats how a lot of the world looks at it. Look at europe right now. Europe is disgusted with the United States. We talk about how the u. S. Needs allies. President trump has said i dont need allies. I need to make sure america is strong by itself. You get into this kind of situation and sometimes being strong by yourself is not enough. Europe is in a good position to try to broker some kind of resolution here. Were going to confer with you later this evening in this newscast so we can come back and talk about what might happen next and what can congress do. Thank you. This is especially frightening for military families abroad. We sat down with one south bay mother who says the anguish over what happens next is unbearable to her. Her mom works a swing shift so chances are she has no idea what is going on right now in iraq in between tears she told me about her daughter. She carries her daughters image everywhere. An airman half the world away in an area that could come under attack at any moment. Her mom speakske english, but sometimes language becomes irrelevant when demonstrating anguish. She calls her daughter her idol. She is one of my idol. Reporter carla joined the air force soon after high school. She has been in the middle east for six months and in the last week these images are haunting her mother. Threats of war and more troops moving in in case the unthinkable happens. The constant fear she says of that knock on the door. Were extremely proud of our soldiers. Reporter the family has received an outpouring of support from neighbors, including local veterans of foreign wars. I want to pray for you. Reporter carmen knows her daughter signed up for this. She knows her adopted country needs brave men and women like carla to serve and although her worry has gone up in the last week, she is proud of her little girl who chose to wear the sacred cross of this nation. We apologize there for the transmission there at the end. We lost the audio, but were wishing carla and her daughter well. A live look at sfo right now. The faa issued an restriction over flying over areas of iraq and iran. There is potential for miscalculation or misidentification of planes. This is being done as a precaution to prevent civilian planes from being confused from any planes used in armed conflict. Theres a lot of impact to whats happening overseas. We talked with a stanford professor. He teaches iranian studies. He says what happens next is up to President Trump. Retaliation could mean an even more severe response from iran. The second most powerful person in iran and the decision to attack him was seen by the regime as a direct military attack on iran. They needed to have a response, but i think the base they have chose and again im hoping there is no loss of american lives, might have been a way for them to show their muscle, to show that they have responded, to act out the threats that they have made, but act out in a way that doesnt lead to escalation. That is my hope. We will continue to track all these developments throughout the night. Were going to provide updates during this newscast and all of our digital platforms. Reporter parents say theyre shaken by what happened, but relieved someone has been caught. They say theyll be watching their children closely. Disappointed because you do think its a small town and everybody is here to help each other out and not have anything like that happen. If you see something, Say Something. Be vigilant. Travel in pairs as much as possible. Be aware of your routes to and from school. Reporter those are the safety tips that the district is sending out to families tonight.
