This week we heard quite a few shifting explanations out of the Trump Administration on the killing of general soleimani. What has this response been . Well, look, i think the still is offering mixed messages, the res is saying very specific things. I have the National Security adviser who doesnt confirm the specifics and plenty of evidence that calls into question the specifics. The president cited four embassies and this there was no warning and any time they are under threat they are warned and that didnt happen. But lets be realistic here. In the wake of the Soleimani Killing it was a you had the white house scrambling to rescue some International Diplomacy here to try to keep the allies on the same talking points, if you will. They were struggling to do that. Struggling to explain. But i think some of the criticism is mitigated because of irans own behavior. First lying about downing the passenger jet and then fessing up to it sparking internal domestic protests and it bought the president some space both internationally to work on Public Diplomacy and domestically to try to repair some time with congress here, with some trust. I dont know if the trust between the congress and the executive branch will be any time soon but what is happening in iran right now does take a little bit of the political pressure off the Trump Administration. Absolutely. With the iranians protesting and calling for the leader to step down. Chuck, senator Susan Collins reported shes meeting with a fairly small group of republican senators who assure that new witnesses will be allowed to speak at president trumps impeachment trial. What does this say about mcconnells claim that he has the votes to move forward without fresh testimony . Well, hes been very careful what he said. He said he had the votes to get going. To get this without a guarantee of witnesses. I think one thing, larry, that i remind people of is that and i ask this question and ill ask it rhetorically, what is Mitch Mcconnells priority . The president s politics or the Senate Majority politics . I promise you worried about the Senate Majority more than anything. So the fact of the matter is it strikes me as pretty smart politics by Susan Collins, martha mcsally, cory gardner, the vulnerable republican incumbents, i do expect them to all vote together. All of those vulnerable republicans that would like to have more witnesses, i think that is my guess is that that group, whether it is three, six, seven, maybe max, that they vote as a block. And if they did that and they wanted witnesses, well it owe guarantee we would see witnesses thats for sure. Moving on. New president ial polls in South Carolina and nevada show spikes por tom steyer allowing him to participate in the next tuesday democratic debate. With him spending more money in the two states than all combined, is money now replacing the traditional Retail Campaign forum weve used in the early states . Larry, i would buy into the premise if steyer were making a move in iowa and New Hampshire. Hes spending the same a gagillion dollars in those two states too and it hasnt had the same impact. Lets be realistic. If you are the only person advertising in a state, you could garner some name i. D. And essentially hes the only person focusing on nevada and South Carolina television airwaves to a thorough extent. That is not the case in iowa and New Hampshire. So im a little hesitant to assume much other than that is what Money Matters when no one else is advertising and the rest of the campaign shows up i expect the steyer number to fade but well see. The good news for him is he got his way into the debate. And that is thats what matters most for him. Does he make the most of it. Ill be honest, im skeptical those numbers are nothing but sort of a bit inflated because hes the only one running tv ads in either state. A gagillion dollars. How many zeros is that. I dont know any more. So and so is spending 76 million. I remember when 76 million, this is in 2000, was the combined ad budget for both candidates for president in the nomination. So these numbers are sort of no longer real sometimes. Astronomical. Off the charts. Chuck todd, thank you so much. And before you go, good luck to you and your Green Bay Packers today. Well, i appreciate that. Go, pack, do. Thank you. Be sure to join chuck for this mornings meet the press with an interview with National Security adviser Robert Obrien and exclusive interviewed with rand paul and michael bennet. Tune into meet the press after this newscast at 8 00 a. M. Just stay right here. And larry will be back in 40 minutes for our weekly chat and look at a record amount of Campaign Funding for the 2020 president ial election. Did we know we were talking about that with chuck . Two candidates who may be changing the paradigm. Larry, well see you in a few. Got it. Turning to other news. A fight over crash data that could save lives. A state lawmaker is demanding that the California Public Utilities Commission make public annual crash data reports from uber and lyft. For years state regulators have hidden the data even though theyre not legally obligated do so. Lorena gonzalez is promising to have every tool available to force the release of that information. The cpuc has yet to respond to allegations that it is hiding information because of industry hobbying. Wow, turning to vianey arana with a look at our sunday forecast. We had a little bit of rain yesterday. A lot of sunshine in the end. Kwa. Yeah it moved out but that is leaving behind the cold morning lows. If you are heading out soon, ill bring you through the timeline. Because we are dry for the first part of the morning and still the instability. But the view of san jose. Look at skies. You could see cloud cover there. And also look at how beautiful this view of the Golden Gate Bridge is. It looked like it may be blown out in terms of lighting. But it is 49 degrees in San Francisco. Meanwhile right now in the 30s in other parts of the bay briba cold 31. Santa rosa 38. And in through oakland also in the 30s. So what are we seeing in terms of the temperature change . If you notice up through napa, this is a 24hour temperature change meaning theyre running 11 degrees colder compared to the same time yesterday. Concord 9 degrees colder. And our microclimate highs for today, a little bit of instability still left. So for the first half of the morning well get a mix of sun and clouds again and by the evening because of instability there is a chance well catch a couple of isolated showers but not a big rainmaker and not everybody will see the light rain. Temperatures range in the 50s. But still dealing with the High Surf Advisory in place through 3 00 p. M. King tides, weve been talking about that all weekend, the high tide over 6 feet at about 11 54 this morning around the coastline. So the highlighted purple line, means the waves will be dangerous. It could be impressive to watch, but watch from a safe distance. We have the storm ranger up and scanning. You could see radar is pretty quiet. But well keep our Doppler Radar working because were tracking two additional storms. So lets talk about the hourbyhour outlook. 30s right now. And looking at 8 30, i talked about the instability bringing a chance of isolated showersm here they have, san rafael and San Francisco. Not everybody is going to see it. It is a bit disorganized meaning sh areas will be driving down the highway and then noticing rain. Our chance of more rain. Monday night into Tuesday Morning, more rain is possible with low rain totals about less than a tenth of an inch, maybe a quarter in the mountain areas and fast forwarding ahead into wednesday, this is the biggest rainmaker right now. From a half an inch to an inch and a half and also a cold storm which means we could see snow near the lower elevations at about 3500 feet. Wednesday night into thursday morning. It is very windy. So widespread rain expected on thursday. We begin to calm down heading into friday morning but by from night into Early Saturday Morning we get more rain. But dont worry, well get clear skies in time for the niners game in time for sunday according to the rain models now. So monday night into Tuesday Morning, light storms and wednesday night into thursday more widespread is our big rainmaker this week. Kira. Hank you. It is 7 21. But i love the bay bridge. And youre right, kira, it is cold. It is in the 30s right now. But look at how pretty this shot is of san jose. You could see the sky there. We have a good mix of clouds. Oh, no, my San Francisco camera officially gave out. Well that was a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge. It was a shot of the Golden Gate Bridge. I dont know what happened there. But your microclimate highs for today, well be in the 50s. So here is a look at what to expect when you head out of the door. The reason i have showers in the outlook, the first half of the morning is okay but moving into the evening we still have instability bringing the chance of isolated showers along the coastline so not everyone will see the showers today however we have another system rolling into tonight and tomorrow morning and still tracking the High Surf Advisory and ill tell you about the new storms coming up in about 15 minutes. Record Campaign Spending for the 2020 president ial election. But two Democratic Candidates are bucking the fundraising trend. We explain with Larry Gerston next. Trump those preexisting conditions are protected. Vo a broken promise. Trump repeatedly tried to undermine coverage for 134 million americans with preexisting conditions. Mike he just doesnt care if you have a preexisting condition he wants to deny you access to coverage. If he is reelected, hell keep trying to do that and i think we cant let that happen. Vo as president , mike will lower costs, and protect americans with preexisting conditions. Mike im Mike Bloomberg and i approve this message. Welcome back. The president ial Election Year will see record Campaign Spending. The controversial Trump Presidency has brought enormous fundraising from proopponents and opponents alike. More significantly selffunded efforts by democrats Michael Bloomberg and tom steyer have assumed unparalleled prominent. Nbc bay area political analyst Larry Gerston joins us. Welcome back. Have these two candidates, steyer and bloomberg, changed the paradigm for nomination success. Well know the answer to this whole thing in july. Close to july, as to how much it stuck. Stuck to their plan and changed this paradigm. But for now, look, billionaires bloomberg and steyer has demonstrated a willingness to part with hundreds of Million Dollars pursuing the presidency with different strategies. Bloomberg is full kwi funding his effort, asserting his approach will show he cant be bought by special interest. Steyer has a hybrid approach through selffunding Campaign Donations which have allowed him to participate in some of the debates, including the one coming up this tuesday. Still, almost all of the campaign has come from his own pockets. How much money are we talking . Gazillions according to chuck todd. Gazillions. More zeros than ill ever know for darn sure. A record number. It is crazy. Steyer already committed more than 100 million, already. With significant amounts going to the early caucus and primary states. Bloomberg has past the 200 million amount with with most of his money going to states after the first four nomination contests and emphasizing the supertuesday days on march 3rd. And california is one of the states with the largest number of delegates at stake. For the first time. And you mentioned that we might not know fully the results until july of how this money is panning out. But what do we see so far . Well, the latest poll shows something interesting. They show some success for steyer. A poll of South Carolina democrats released last week showed a surge for steyer. All the way up to a tie for second. I think from a distant 4 just a few months ago. Similarly a poll of Nevada Democrats released last week showed a jump for steyer to 12 from 5 . So there are important takeaways with the change going on with big money. First South Carolina and nevada are are the third and fourth states in the democratic nomination process. Significant because like iowa and New Hampshire before them, they potentially play huge roles this setting the tone for the rest of the nomination process. And second, steyer spent 22 million in South Carolina and nevada alone. More money than all of the other Democratic Candidates combined. So you could see how he is just laser focused and, boom, there goes his popularity. And people dont really know him. Hes from california. We know him and now hes being introduced to the rest of the country. And what about Michael Bloomberg, depending who you ask it doesnt seem like hes getting as much bang for his buck. You see him a lot on tv. Every other commercial is bloomberg because hes employing a National Campaign strategy focusing on the states after the first four events. Even though he entered the race seven weeks ago hes averaging 6 and as high as 11 nationally in one poll. And this could ome be the beginning. If we consider the 100 million bloomberg spent to win the third term as mayor in thrk. 100 million for new york. You add that up nationally. That could amount to 6 billion. If you spent proportionately the same thing, 6 billion. Which is about twice the cost of all campaign costs of donald trump and Democratic Hillary Clinton campaign in 2016. The dollars as we talked about with chuck are just beyond belief. Astronomical. So do you think the self funded campaigns will become the new standard for winning elections or being in an election . You know, here is where it gets more interesting than we might think about money. Historically selffunded campaigns have done miserably in most major races. In 1996 independent candidate ross perot spent 65 million of his own money on his campaign and came in a poor third. That was a lot of money in 1996. Steve forbes spent 80 million in 1996 and 2000 and didnt even win the republican nomination and in the 2010 governor race in california, this is sobering things up, republican meg whitman spent 150 million of her own money. Only to lose to jerry browns 26 million campaign. So you know we talk about money and running things and what not, but from the examples we could see massive spending may garner name recognition, it doesnt necessarily translate to votes. So whether the massive spending in 2020 will turn out differently, well you could see both sides of this argument that may not be as powerful at the end as it has been currently. Always interesting. Larry, thanks so much. Well be back in a moment with vianeys final look at weather. It is 7 54 and so far were off to a good start out there. A live look at Golden Gate Bridge. 49 degrees now in San Francisco. But in other areas were a lot colder. Look at napa, 34. Santa rosa 38. 39 in san jose. So were waking up to the 30s. Check out storm ranger. Weve had Doppler Radar up and things have calmed down significantly. But we are still tracking that instability which could bring a chance of isolated showers in through this evening. Not for everybody. So some of you might not see the rain but still the chance up to the north bay and the coastline. Check out your temperatures for today. For the first half of the day we should be okay. Combination of sun and clouds, cool weather in the 50s. 55 for oakland, 54 for napa, 57 in san jose and 54 in San Francisco. There is still the High Surf Advisory in place. The high tide is expected to be over six feet, around 11 54 p. M. So all of thissen ire this entire area there is a chance for possible coastal flooding that means the waves are so high that it keeps on to the shore and that could be an area for concern so be careful as you head outdoors. Next seven days. So what do we have ahead . A chance of showers tonight. And then our next storm moves in late tomorrow night into early Tuesday Morning. So more rain is possible. However, were tracking low rain totals. Were talking less than a tenth of an inch for most areas heading into tuesday. Then we get a little bit of a break tuesday night into earl kwi wednesday morning. By wednesday night into early thursday morning is the best rainmaker so far. So this is the third storm. Rain chances right now in total on average from about half an inch to an inch and a half. Because it is a colder storm, there is the possibility of seeing snow near the 3,500 elevation mark which means some of the local mountain top areas. So that is something to watch. Into thursday we get wet weather continues then a break into friday and friday night into saturday morning were tracking another kans another chance of rain. But the trend is showing clearing skies for the big game again for the 49ers heading into sunday. So get through the week of storms first. Over the next seven days. Here is a closer look at what to expect. Rain monday night into early Tuesday Morning, a little bit of a break into wednesday morning and then more clouds and rain moves in Late Wednesday night into thursday. Thursday is the biggest rainmaker with over an inch of rain expected for some of the Higher Elevation areas and were talking about the low snow levels and a dry break on triand then another chance of showers heading into saturday.
