Nationwide there are now 6,000 cases and more than 100 deaths. And the new number just in within the last few hours, there are now 200,000 infections worldwide. Staggering numbers that were dealing with right now. A look at our forecast. What are we in for today . Its going to be raining but off and on. Its on right now for much of the bay area. Well take a break by late morning and see it redeveloping for the afternoon. We are seeing the showers anywhere from parts of Solano County down to marin county, and then just north of san jose. So well see it spreading as we go into the next few hours. And then taking a break as we head through about 1 00 to 2 00. Well start to see popup showers that could bring in heavy rain along with small hail so ill be tracking that for you. Youre seeing flashing lights in walnut creek. Until you said i was seeing flashing lights, looks like they got it loaded on the back of the huge flatbed. Traffic was distracted. Now theyre off, no more issues for walnut creek. The bay bridge toll plaza has not had any issues. Didnt yesterday and were hoping for no issues today. Right now the wet roadways may be a concern with folks at higher speeds. Were more likely to see spinouts. Do be careful out there but light traffic because folks are abiding by shelter in place. Back to you. And that is very good to see that people are doing that so far. Governor gavin newsom telling families schools will likely remain closed even longer, possibly until the fall in an effort just to slow down the coronavirus and to keep us protected. Today in the bays kris sanchez joins us with what we know at least at this reporter hi there, laura. At this point we went to bed knowing the kids would likely be learning at home for the rest of the school year, but we woke up not really knowing what that was going to look like. The state superintendent did push out some guidelines. I think we all have a lot of questions not just as parents but educators as well. Shortly after pushing out the guidance the superintendent tweeted saying im hosting a webinar to discuss the details. We have room for 5,000. And after just a few hours we are already near capacity. Clearly a lot of questions out there. He will likely field questions about what Distance Learning will look like. Pointed to some districts that plan to load zoom and webex on to mobile devices, use google classrooms, some districts considering preloading usb drives with content to send home and also partnering with local wifi providers like our Parent Company comcast which already offered up unlimited data and an open wifi network to help lowincome families stay connected to the educational content. Also suggesting partnering with local pbs stations to put content out that way. Now los angeles unified set this up initially working with folks in the bay area and the same programming will be on the air here shortly. It will be standards based content with lesson plans and do at home assignments. Theres some teacher training as well. It will be particular lly helpf for districts that dont have enough mobile devices to send home. It is an equity and parity issue. The state superintendent said theyre working to address Child Care Needs for some people. The two things he promised is that employees would continue to get paid through this difficult time and that meals will still be provided for the students who count on them at their local schools. So we have seen some of those distributions. Those will continue, and we are still pressing the superintendent for what this means. Our local district certainly were waiting to hear from them. Its kind of a trickle down information situation at this point. All right, kris sanchez reporting for us live this morning. Thank you, kris. 6 07 for you right now. Joining us on the phone we have San Francisco state senator scott weiner. Are you there with us, senator . I am, good morning. Good to have you with us this morning. I want to start out with something i think is on the minds of many parents this morning. After yesterday Governor Newsom announcing that most of the Public Schools could be out possibly until the fall leaving a lot of parents already finding it hard to make it here in the bay find child care in this difficult time s. There something that could be in the works to help a lot of those parents really struggling to find out a solution here . Its really hard for parents still working. We have our newest frontline workers. Our supermarket and pharmacy workers who we never viewed before but they are now. They need to go to work and are doing heroic work. Child care is considered an essential service. You dont want to have large groups of kids. Its hard. We did just pass an emergency, 1. 1 billion budget governor flexibility to deploy these resources. A lot of those resources are going to go into the health care system, expanding capacity, nursing homes. We need more support for parents who have to work and care for their kids. Absolutely. Also the big impact on seniors as well as the homeless because they are being hit hard with this virus. What is the work being done to get the word out to them as well as to prevent the spread within the community . I think marginalized and vulnerable communities are at great risk. We know seniors and people with Chronic Health conditions are at greatest risk to have a severe reaction to the virus and have severe symptoms, and so we are its so important that they stay isolated, there are various groups working on making sure they have home delivered meals like meals on wheels. Other groups are mobilizing. Its important for us to check in on not person to person but neighbors, family members, loved ones who are seniors or have health conditions. For the homeless we need to get people inside into a safe and healthy setting. There are more Resources Available for that whether its motels or trailers. Our immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants, people who dont speak great english who are scared of going to through official channels. We need to make sure they have access as well. A lot of things changing in our everyday lives. Certainly well get through this together. We will. State senator scott wiener from San Francisco joining us this morning.
