We begin with a dangerous situation at a Senior Living facility. Three residents have tested positive for the virus. Nbc bay areas jean elle is in burlingame with the latest. Jean . Reporter janel, this is a danger situation for seniors at atria Senior Living in burlingame. Three residents have tested positive for coronavirus. You can see theres a sign on the front door that says its temporarily closed to visitors until further notice. According to the San Mateo County Public Health department it learned from atria that six residents are in the hospital. Three of those residents have tested positive for coronavirus. Atria has suspended nonessential visitation and appointments. County Officials Say the facility has outbreak precautions in place, including taking residents temperatures twice a day. The county says its now partnering with state officials to make sure residents needs are addressed. This is a Senior Living and memory care facility. The coronavirus is particularly dangerous for the elderly. And in a communal Living Environment containing the spread of the virus is a big concern. Here in San Mateo County there are 80 coronavirus cases and one death. Now, i did call the front desk tonight to see if we could find out more about how all of this unfolded. I was told the facility is closed to visitors and i would need to speak with the executive director. Reporting live in burlingame, jean elle, nbc bay area news. Okay, jean, thank you so much. We want to bring you some breaking news out of las vegas. The faa says the air Traffic Control tower at Mccarron International airport is shut down right now. This is a live picture of the airport. Planes are still departing and arriving. Thats because there is a backup plan in place. And the reason why the Traffic Control tower is shut down is because someone tested positive for the covid19 virus. The airport, again, is still open but there are reduced operations right now until the situation is resolved. Back here at home, we are all in this together. Literally. Tonight all nine bay area counties, you can see the map there, have shelter at home orders in place. Napa and solano were the final two counties to restrict movement. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney joins us in napa. And terry, still no reported cases in napa county, but that is expected to change. Reporter absolutely. Theres no doubt that the virus at some point will get to napa county. But as of this moment napa county is the only county in the bay area where you can do certain things, and people are coming up here from as far away as alameda county. Not for the wineries, the wine tasting. Not to have one last meal in a restaurant, but for the beauty salons. At this salon in downtown napa the calls have been pouring in for appointments, many from people who cant get coifed where they live. I had two clients come from berkeley today. Their stylists were shut down. Reporter tomorrow at midnight all nonessential businesses in napa will be forced to shut down to protect people from the coronavirus. Were just trying to cram everybody in, get everyone settled and get everyones hair looking great before this happens. Reporter bailey nance is a client who is also on the front lines of the battle against the virus. Shes a nurse with st. Josephs health care in petaluma visiting seniors where they live. They have multiple disease processes like chf and hypertension, diabetes. We want to make sure that those are the people that are educated the most because theyre the most at risk. Reporter napa county shelter at home policy comes one day after its Health Officer said there was no pressing need for one, citing zero confirmed cases and napas distance from the outbreak epicenter, Santa Clara County. Today she explained what changed. The Community Spread of virus in neighboring counties has warranted this decision to order people to shelter at home. Reporter late this afternoon Solano County became the ninth and final bay area county to announce a policy less than one day after the county Health Officer there appeared reluctant to endorse one. The shelter at home policy is like the ones you see in the other counties. They ask you to stay at home unless you have to go out for food or health care and the like. More than 35,000 confirmed cases in that country. Italy is the worlds worstaffected country after china. Globally, we are now topping 200,000 cases. Johns Hopkins University released new numbers today. More countries are issuing lockdowns and closing down borders. The death toll for covid19 is now at nearly 9,000 worldwide. And just in tonight, d. C. Racing to warn members of congress, taking a live look at capitol hill twor congressmen have tested positive, one from florida, the other from utah. Both representatives are isolated and say they are doing okay. And back here in the bay area a look at the latest numbers of confirmed cases in the bay area. Santa clara county with the most with 175. San mateo county follows with 80 cases. San francisco has 51 confirmed cases. Shelter at home, but what about the homeless . Late today Governor Newsom says the state is crunching the numbers. 108,000 Homeless People here in california. Thats an estimate. One numerical model that theyre working with shows that if there was an attack rate of 56 then about 60,000 Homeless People could contract covid19. That creates a deep point of anxiety for the existing population, but moreover for our Health Care Delivery system, our capacity to move people in and out of the shelters safely without contacting other people and putting them at risk as well. Again, those numbers could be staggering. 108,000 estimated Homeless Population around the state. 60,000 of those Homeless People could get infected here. The governors ordered more than 1,300 trailers and provided 50 million for hotel and motel rooms for Homeless People to stay. The governor also mentioned again today that schools may shut down through summer. The announcement surprising School Districts and freaking out parents. Nbc bay areas ian cull finds out more on how parents and educators are bracing for this possibility. Reporter there are 6 million California Kids now forced to learn at home due to covid19. You know, just trying to keep them focused on a routine. Reporter Andres Quintero of san jose says his two School Aged Kids have been busy with classroom online hangouts along with traditional worksheets. The packets of homework theyve received are helpful because they give them some structure. Reporter theyre part of the Alum Rock Union school district. The superintendent says they sent home three weeks of material and are now shifting to planning through the academic year. We know we have at least 15 days worth of flexible learning. Now we can begin to see how is this going to be played out. Reporter all districts in the state are mandated to have those plans because its not a vacation. Learning needs to happen. And students need to keep on learning so that theyre ready for the next school year. I know i keep going back to fourth grade as reporter and some like Sacred Heart School in salinas are Holding Virtual classes on google and zoom where dozens of kids tune in to ask questions and see each other. Governor newsom announced that all standardized testing is canceled, adding tonight the state is helping roll out this new normal. There is an agreement here between tesla and alameda county. Tesla wanted to continue to make its cars at its factory in fremont, but the county said its not an essential business. Adding to all of this, a tesla worker on the factory line told us conditions are not safe inside the factory. In fact, several factory workers reached out to us and complained that tesla wasnt taking this whole scenario about coronavirus seriously enough. I would not be here if it were my honest choice and i didnt feel forced to use my pto that ive saved up for so long. So heres the bottom line. Tesla can keep the factory open but only about 2,500 workers can be on site during this shelter in place. There are usually 10,000 employees at the factory. Reporter the president saying today that he is pressing two navy ships into service. One in virginia headed to new york. The other docked in san diego, possibly heading here to northern california. The ship heading to this area is called the u. S. Navy mercy. Mark nouveau is a federal coordinating officer for fema. In this case theyre talking about bringing it from san diego up here to be able to relieve some of the pressure on the emergency medical system, the e. R. S. Reporter the ship is fully equipped with 12 operating rooms, 1,000 beds, medical laboratory, pharmacy, and helipad. Everything you see in a traditional hospital is on the ship. Theirtrauma. Reporter which means the mercy will deal with industrial, gunshot, and accident patients, not covid19 patients because theres no room for isolation. 71 civilian doctors and nurses from existing systems and 1,200 medically trained sailors will be on that ship. Nationwide, hospitals are reporting they dont have enough protective gear for the tsunami of sick coronavirus patients. New york Governor Cuomo is waiting for a similar ship called the u. S. Navy comfort to dock there to relieve some pressure from its overcrowded hospitals. Its an extraordinary step. Reporter a step toward health the bay area may need during this crisis. The mayor vaftd Safeway Store to see how the store is working around the clock to stock its shelves. And he has a specific message to people who are buying too much because theyre panicking. For the last two days her friends have been joining in from across the country. Its especially helpful for those who are in San Francisco under the shelter in place order. Its water.
