County is nearing its peak of cases. For the first time, we havecodye in san jose with some new inform us. Damian . Reporter well, janelle, this is the Emergency Operation centers where a lot of tough decisions are made. Dr. Cody told me that although the numbers appear to be leveling off, we are still not out of the woods. We still dont have widespread testing. This is what the new normal looks like. Todays interview done remotely, over the computer, from the back of my pickup truck. We started with a question on the top of everyones list . Have we bent the curve, doctor . I dont think we peaked. What i can tell you is that we have slowed things down. So for example, it you look at the beginning, like right around where we put the shelter in place order, the curve, it was growing fast, right . It was, the numbers were going up quite a bit every day, and now that weve had that order in place, for more than two weeks, what you can see is that the growth has slowed. So were still growing but were not growing as fast. So what will be your bench mark . What you are looking at when you start opening a door, if you will, and allowing people to start normalizing every day life. This is a really, really, really hard question. As you will remember, it was really hard to put this in place. Really hard to put this in place. And i would say that the actions that everyone collectively have taken has vslowed things down. It is going to be really hard to know how to let up, how to time that and where to do it. Were looking to experiences in other parts of the world that have already been with this, through this, right, what worked and what didnt. And so i can tell you that in places that had a lockdown, this shelter in place, like we have, if you take it all at once, things rebound. Reporter so how will they open at that valve . Allow ten people to congregate at one time and increase to 25 . A lot of unanswered questions. We will find out what she thinks about the 49ers possibly playing some games at levi stadium in september. Thats next. And by the way im not wearing my mask because there is nobody around me right now, damian trujillo, nbc bay area news. What you see is a map created by Johns HopkinsUniversity Near baltimore. This map is from last week, the end of march. You can see where the problem spots are. This is us in the bay area. Down in l. A. And the big clust ner new york and you can even see down in miami. Now, look at the updated map, this is from today, and this is in red now, overall, the cases there, overall, the same trend. The west coast, fairing a little bit better, than what we see in the east coast, and even parts of the midwest. Overall, we have now more than 330,000 cases reported nationwide. The death toll, more than 10,000 people. San francisco is ramping up covid19 testing for its front line workers and First Responders. The new drivethrough, walkthrough testing site opened at pier 30 this morning and dozens of First Responders took advantage of the quick process by appointment and the city says it can handle 200 employees per day by the end of the week. Access to the expanded testing means that front line staff who have become infected can be identified earlier and give the care that they need, get the care that they need. It means that front line workers currently in quarantine, but are not infected, can return to their families and keep doing the critical work that we need them to do. The mayor says once they test all First Responders, they will expand to other essential workers, including those working at Grocery Stores and pharmacies. An update about an outbreak in the nursing home in the east bay. One person has died and 48 others have tested positive. And the Contra Costa CountyHealth Department confirms that 27 patients and 22 Staff Members at the Orinda Care Center tested positive. All patients and the entire staff were tested after two caretakers showed symptoms. The person who died had been in the hospice care at that facility. Four residents have now been hospital license. Public health is now testing two other senior care facilities, in Contra Costa County. We have been documenting the struggle and small successes of the many people and businesses impacted by this pandemic. Among the hardest hit here is our tourism industry. Even when the shelter at home is lifted im not sure all of us with ill be comfortable to travel, whether it is will be comfortable to travel, whether it is leaving the bay area or coming into stran. Thats what experts are looking at. When the sun goes down, San Francisco city hall will be bathed in purple in honor of all of the hospitality workers currently struggling with the covid19, because theyre not at work. Right now, currently, 55 hotels in San Francisco are completely shut down. But another 200 or so are still operating at some capacity. They are actually housing nurses that are being brought from other cities here to the bay area, to help traveling nurses and doctors and other hospital staff that may not go home to their own families, because of covid19, and their exposure. I spoke to an industry expert, with hunter hospitality consultant, and he says while that is something, it certainly is not enough to keep the industry going. Peter, what in terms of a Financial Impact have we already seen on the hospitality industry, even though were only just now starting our fourth week of this shelter at home . Well, to give you an idea, jessica, the Hotel Industry contributes to San Francisco in tax dollars about 450 million a year. So you can imagine, when a hotel room is full, it is when we see the tax gain for the city. We average about 80 plus in the Hotel Community in occupancy. In the month of march, were finishing march close to about 27 . And predicting in april to be in the low teens and single digits. So it is a big Economic Impact to the city. So its not even just lack of hotel rooms, its all the jobs we dont even think about when we think about the hospitality industry. It runs the gamut. It runs the gamut. If you think about when you stay at a hotel, and you spend the night, youre impacting a housekeeper, a doorman, a front desk clerk, a bartender, and its hitting all aspects of the hotel. It really is, so many people being impacted. Now coming up at 6 00, we talk to peter about what it is going to take, exactly what you were saying, raj, to recover, what that recovery is going to look like in terms of time, and will we feel safe enough to head out the door and start putting money back into the San Francisco city coffers in terms of travel. It might take months. Thank you, jessica. States hit hard by the virus are in need of more ventilators and tonight, california is answering the call. Governor newsom announced that california is sending 500 ventilators to the national stockpile. The state scrambled to stock up on ventilator, ppes and other vital supplies before the surge of cases and so far things have remained manageable. The governor pointed to physical distancing as one of the big reasons why, and urged everyone to keep it up. We continue to do that, we continue to hold the line, and that means models will continue to buy us time, because you, by definition, are bending the curve, which allows us the days and weeks to do exactly what you see being done right behind me here, at sleeptrain arena. The governor chose sacramentos sleeptrain arena to hold the news briefing because it is an example of an organization volunteering space. The facility is being prepped to house coronavirus patients later this month. Very good news, help is here, students in antioch, are getting some critically important tools to continue learning as they shelter at home. To have to go to school at home, they need these, laptop computers. The district has been scrambling to find enough laptops to send home with families. This is no easy task. Here is nbc bay area jodi hernandez. Staff members at the Antioch Unified School district have been forced to become i. T. Experts over the past week. They worked hard to reimage 28100 laptops, and get them ready to hand out to students who dont have computers at home. We have been working nonstop, throughout the weekend, throughout the spring break, to make sure that our families have what they needed. This morning, they began handing them out. Hundreds of families lined up in their cars, for the curbside pickup. Kids and their parents say they have been anxious at home, waiting to hear how and when instruction will resume. I miss my school. I want to go back. I want to get everything going soon. It was very confusing and just anxious at the same time because every parent wants to see their kids do better, you know what im saying and through their education. Students say theyre looking forward to reconnecting with their teachers and classmates. This is going to help me stay safe, and quarantine, and this is going to help me to be able to do my work and focus and get back on the right track. As the district launches its Distance Learning they say no student will receive a faili grade during e pandemic. Students will get eithe a pass or no mark instead. Its important to continue with education. But no child who cant participate because stressors are going on in the family, will be penalized. The district is handing out all of the computers that they have. But this wont be enough. They have had to dip into the reserves to buy thousands more. Theyre also hoping for donations. In antioch, im jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. Jodi, thank you. Up next at 5 00, waiving rent for tenants, not just delaying it, waiving it. A bold new proposal for people hit hard by this crisis. Plus, the trivalley, how a long time dairy farm is helping its workers by doing something good. Im chief meteorologist jeff ranieri, joining you from outside where it is cold and it is raining. Ill show you when this rain moves out and some warmer temperatures, and sun, as it moves back in, the forecast in about seven minutes. The dow surging nearly 8 today. The s p 500 and nasdaq up. A lot of people in the bay area are struggling to pay their rent. If there is such a thing as no rent, today, two south bay Council Members released a plan, but not everyone is pleased about. It the plan would let renters apply for a threemonth grace period. San jose Council Members say they will present the plan to the city council tomorrow. It would waive rent, not just a grace period, it would waive rent for three months, if families can show Financial Hardship due to this crisis. The families are not going to be able to pay that back rent. And so theyre having to make choices between feeding their families or paying the little they can towards rent. The Property Owners and landlords say this is simply unfair, to get any of their money back, they would have to apply for Small Business loans. Even in this time, there is something good happening in every city in the bay area. One of our favorite parts of the newscast. Jessica rejoins us from home. An east Bay Institution is definitely doing something good, right . Totally. Well, you know, i live in pleasantton and the beauty of living in pleasanton, it is a little Tiny Community that is so adorable, and an institution, if you live in pleasanton or youve been here, you know about the dairy, the meadowlark dairy has been in the same family since the 1950s, old dairy, drive through, buy the bacon, eggs, everything. It has been in the family, since the 1950s. I have to tell you, it is also the cool place, for everyone, all of the High School Kids to work in it, it has been since the 1960s. So its really the big, big deal in town. Well, the kids that work there, a lot of the kids, their parents are told them, they dont want them working there, so the family is doing something good, by reaching out to their 48 employees and telling the kids, hey, if your parents are not going to let you come to work, dont worry, were open for business, but we are still going to give you hours of sick leave so you get a paycheck. And they went further by telling the kids, if you need food, you need something from the dairy for your family, you can take it. We are here for our community and our family. Theyre really stepping up. And the best thing about the dairy, when you drive through, their signature thing is you get a frosty, or an ice cream cone, brought to your car, raj, and janelle, so that is still happening here in pleasanton, something good to make us all feel good about our community, and all of the wonderful people we have in our community as well. Now, whats the new normal here in the bay area . Everyone is trying to get used to their whole new getup and new schedule. My new normal is my new home studio, a little bit more sophisticated than when you saw me a couple of weeks ago when i was in the kitchen. I got booted by the kids because they couldnt use the kitchen and im in the living room with my deer, im not tech savvy but i was able to set it up myself and i keep on my desk a little sign that says be grateful, and during all of this, even though were struggling, there is a lot to be thankful for, and to band together, we will be able it make it through this. Impressive setup, jess, good job. Thank you. And many in the bay area are stepping up to help with the Financial Burdens of the pandemic. And over the weekend we had a telethon celebrating Silicon Valley strong, and we raised 272,000 on top of the money pledged by corporations and the money will be used in santa clara who have lost so much. And we are grateful for the rain coming in. Because we surely need it. Jeff ranieri continues our coverage from home and this is great weather, jeff, because we need this, right . It feet like this weekend had just mentally washed everything off for us, and getting at least a little bit of a fresh start that way and we have some sunshine coming our way, as we head throughout this week, and i think you will like what is coming as we move through the next seven day, right now, we have some rainfall that is moving throughout the bay area, and some heavier pockets, thats developed, and what i wanted to start off with is a look at the threeday rainfall totals, very impressive across the bay area, and 1. 61 in the oakland hills. San jose, 1. 22. Down in San Francisco. An inch. And what were dealing with is a storm system just offshore and that is continuing to push to the south. That is the slow movement that kept the rainfall across the bay area. If you zoom in and get a closer look, some of the heaviest rain is pushing into the bay area, and it has a little bit more of an unusual trajectory than normal. This is moving from the south, off towards the north so i want to go ahead and take us into the heaviest pocket right now that i have, and that is over sonoma, a thunderstorm producing lightning and small hail, so if you live rohnert park, petaluma, you could have lightning and hail in the next 30 to 45 minutes. If you need to be outside for any reason at all the next 30 to 45 minutes, you hear the thunder, you definitely want to head inside. Otherwise the rainfall that is just starting to leave San Francisco is now pushing up into mill valley, also san rafael, and this will continue over the next 45 minutes, as well. And so were kind of on this last leg of the storm, right now, and as you will see for the morning forecast trm, were going to try to dry things out for us with a mix of sun and clouds, and we will start cold, down in the 40s. So these restrictions we have in place, we know they have been tightened, but if youre just getting some fresh air around your house tomorrow morning, or each just jogging around your house, to get the blood moving, make sure you have the jacket down and go down to 41 in the north bay. And the best time to get outside, im calling it here from 10 00 a. M. To 2 00 p. M. , just because temperatures will be warming up and we should start to get some sunshine in here, and i think it will make it enjoyable for us. So down here in the south bay, we are going up to 60 in san jose. And more of these upper 50s, and low 60s, through Contra Costa County, and almeda counties. And relatively light winds throughout the bay area, and up to 60 in palo alto. And 56 in daly city. And San Francisco remains cool here, with 55 in the embarcadero and 57 for the mission. And lets bring you out to the north bay, and you will see right through napa, sonoma, novato, low to mid70s and once again, notice we will get some Sunshine Building in tomorrow, and with some relatively light winds, so i think it is going to be better for us, now that weve had some rain to get that sun in and try to give you a little bit of that boost. As we get new that sevenday forecast, only a 30 chance of a slight shower tomorrow. Again, really trying to dry things out. And then over wednesday, thursday, friday, saturday, and sunday, we are looking at sunshine, and a little bit of cloud cover mixing in with 50s to 60s in San Francisco. And for the inland valley forecast, also just a 30 chance of a shower tomorrow, and look at this, we are going up to a warmer 72 on saturday, and then once we hit next monday, this is day 28 inside with covid19. We should still be holding on to the 70s in the forecast. So there is good news coming up in the next sevenday forecast, at 6 00 tonight, i will take a look at the sierra snow pack and also our reservoirs and get you all updated on that. And who know, maybe we will see a little bit of some lucy action. I have some dog treats. She is taking a nap now and we will see what happens in the 6 00. Cant wait to see lucy. Thank you, jeff. Up next at 5 00, walking off the job. Th workers in san jose, yup, righ
