Welcome back. We are all making sacrifices right now to help stop the spread of the virus. Hospitals are as well by postponing elective surgeries. But we found some hospitals not complying. Reporter procedures that generally can wait. The patients and staff at unnecessary risk of getting covid19. Doctors and nurses tell us those procedures are still going on and hospitals are turning a blind eye to the danger possibly to pad their bottom in a classic surgery department, four tell us a surgeon continued to do elective Breast Reconstruction<\/a> surgeries. We were all, the nurses and skrab techs and staff, were surprised. Reporter one agreed to speak with us anomaly. We would express to each other concern these cases were happening. Reporter the cdc instructed doctors to stand down on surgeries that can wait until after the pandemic to preserve hospital resources and reduce covid19 risk within hospitals. Thbl health issued a public order saying fail to comply caused an imminent threat and created an immediate menace to public health. But many of us felt that there wasnt enough scrutiny to making sure that the cases that were being booked actually were true emergency. Reporter staffers became more worried when someone in the operating tested positive for covid. This is absolutely the wrong thing to do, to do elective surgeries. Reporter we had a look at a list of procedures performed by a Plastic Surgeon<\/a> during the pandemic. This is a list we got from a source inside the hospital and had sutter review. If you can give a yes if yes we have to do these right now and no if no these can wait. Okay. Breast tissue expander to implant exchange . No. Breast tissue expander insertion . No. Breast with implant removal and breast lift. Absolutely not. Thats an aesthetic procedure. He says not just unnecessary but potentially dangerous. In an average surgery that patient will probably touch in the Health Care System<\/a> 40 or 50 within a few hours. Reporter a study out of Wuhan University<\/a> in china found out of 138 patients, more than 40 were infected while in the hospital. Nearly 30 of those infected were medical staff. Why would a surgeon continue to do these kind of surgeries . And why would a hospital allow it . Well, you know, there are financial rewards for Health Systems<\/a>. So you are saying it is about money. Analysis of more than o Million Medicare<\/a> cases shows hospitals earned on average 700 more on each patient for an elective procedure than those admitted through the emergency department. Postponing elective surgeries could cost hospitals billions of dollars. The Health Systems<\/a> or the surgeons that continue to choose to operate are probably trying to mitigate the fiscal impact. So thats irresponsible and in my humble opinion unethical. We reached out to other hospitals and both kizer and uc davis freely admitted they are doing elective surgeries but said they are following cdc guidelines and only doing procedures that are time sensitive. Their hospitals are rescheduling surgeries that can be postponed. They are moving forward with elective surgeries that they decide are urgent. Now, the decision on whether a surgery is urgent or not is made by doctors and patients and then reviewed by an independent contractor who is also a physician.
