Today President Trump announced he will use the defense production act to increase the number of medical swabs being produced. Theyre key for carrying out those tests. Well, for the First Time Since the coronavirus pandemic hit the united states, an entire town will be tested, regardless if someone is showing symptoms. Its part of a Research Project put together by the marin county town of bolinas in cooperation with ucsf. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana spoke with the organizers who are hoping this small town idea has big results. Reporter you can see tonight im wearing a actually at whats going to be a test site. All of these tents are already set up for volunteers to start collecting samples from all 1600 bolinas town residents. Researchers want to see how widespread coronavirus is in this small town. They also want to see how they can use that data to help other communities. At 9 00 a. M. , volunteers will be manning these tents as cars full of bolinas residents drive through. Were testing both for active viral infections, nucleic acid pcr test, and for antibodies to detect if people have previously been exposed to the virus. Reporter cyrus harmon is a bolinas resident and one of three people who started this a month ago. She says bolinas is a fairly secluded community, and thats a benefit for researchers. This is a very unique model in a fairly stable rural isolated system. And were being paired with a project happening in the mission. So another community but in an urban center. So that will be interesting. Reporter researchers will be taking a nasal swab and a small amount of blood for each test. The goal is to get every participant interested. There seems to be a lot of interest. I heard heard of anybody who has not volunteered to be tested. The more tests we have the better. Reporter residents raise in order than 300,000 to buy testing materials and set up this site. Organizer Yuri Engstrom says they hope this can serve as a template for other communities to follow. During the white house briefing, the centers for medicare and Medicaid Service announced new transparency measures to track the virus. One of the policies forces Nursing Homes to report cases directly to the cdc so the government can start collecting data on the virus in those facilities. A second measure calls for Nursing Homes to inform residents and their families of covid19 cases in their facilities. The move comes after several outbreaks in bay area Nursing Homes. California department of corrections says he is the first inmate to die because of the virus. More than 650 inmates have been tested, and 115 have tested positive. Tonight police have identified that man as 33yearold Steven Taylor of san leandro. An attorney for his family is calling the shooting unlawful. Nbc bay areas Marianne Favro has the stories. Devastating news tonight out of canada, where a gunman went on a deadly rampage, killing 16 people, including a Police Officer before Police Killed him. Police say it started last night, ended today in the canadian province of nova scotia. The 51yearold suspect posed as a Police Officer, even drove a car that looked like a police car. He was initially investigated over a weapons complaint which somehow triggered the man to go up to unsuspecting victims and shoot them. Police eventually shot and killed him at a gas station.
