Back here in california, state and local leaders are easing some restrictions while extending days people must stay inside. Here are the latest numbers. Nearly 4 Million People filed firsttime jobless claims last week, bringing the sixweek total to more than 30 million new claims. Now, the actual number is likely much higher as overwhelmed unemployment offices struggle to keep up and process the new claims. New at 11 00, a new look at how the virus has spread across the nation. A steady rise each week since march 1st when there were just 89 cases. Two months later, april 30th, more than a million cases. Several states have stayathome orders expiring today or tomorrow, but no state has reached the white house threshold to ease that restriction, a 14day decline in cases. Now, here are the updated numbers around the bay area. About 165 new cases reported today. 29 of those in contra costa county. 41 of them in San Mateo County. Just in, theyre not closing the beaches without a fight. Late tonight the Huntington Beach city Council Voted to pursue a legal challenge to governor newsoms order to close all beaches down in Orange County. Its supposed to begin tomorrow. The mayor of Huntington Beach accuses the governor of prioritizing politics over data, citing the countys low per capita death rate. Huntington beach city leaders say most people in their city were complying with social distancing. Well, could the governor order Northern California beaches to be closed . As of now, no. This evenings beach crowd is pretty sparse. Some residents say theyve been keeping their distance during the recent stretch of sunny weather. Its been so many people. By Public Health order, beaches were restricted to people who live within a fivemile radius. The greatest distance we found people had traveled was as far as sacramento to come to our beaches, which is well beyond the five miles. Very targeted, very focused, trying to solve a health problem, trying to mitigate one that could grow into the future. Its fairly long, but here are some of the activities you can do, cycling, golfing, hiking, horse back riding, picnics, also kite boarding and kitesurfing, canoeing or rowing by yourself, rock climbing, frisbee or frisbee golf, oneonone vall volleyball. Remember you can only do these things with members of your household and you have to stay six feet away from other people. New details on the drug remdesivir. Foster city based Gilead Sciences say its drug is showing promising results in clinical trials. Tonight gilead says it could produce several million rounds of remdesivir next year and within the coming days, the fda is expected to issue an emergency use order for the drug. That will allow it to be given to covid19 patients even though it doesnt have official approval yet. We are looking next at whether or not now we have one really good drug, whether or not if we combine two drugs that work in different ways, can we attack this disease even better . Preliminary results from a National Institutes of health study show the median Recovery Time for patients who took remdesivir was 11 days compared to 15 days for those who took the placebo. Essential workers who need help finding day care and child care have a new tool but not all child care providers are quick to open their doors. She also never thought shed be pregnant with her second child during a pandemic. Kyra is five months along. We are acutely aware of how quickly everything can turn and how scary it is having a newborn that has lifethreatening complications. Reporter after her first son, jude, was born, an unforeseen medical condition put him in the intensive care unit for ten days. He made a full recovery, but now kyra worries whether the coronavirus might infect her and her new baby. Pregnancy is always a time of uncertainty, and certainly theres more of it right now. Reporter so kyra is doing what she can to limit her familys exposure. She leaves most of her groceries outside overnight. Carrots, some oranges. Reporter and she scrubs down the rest with alcohol before putting them away. Right now were exercising so much caution because we dont know what the right protocols are. Reporter initial studies out of wuhan, china, found the coronavirus could lead to premature labor, abnormal liver function, and even death. But those studies were limited in scope since they only examined nine women. Worldwide there are just 451 reported cases of pregnant women infected with the coronavirus. The data is very spotty. Reporter dr. Stephanie goss specializes in highrisk pregnancies. She and her colleagues at ucsf are working with physicians at ucla to conduct a nationwide study examining how coronavirus impacts pregnancy. Theyre aiming to track at least 1,000 pregnant women who were thought to be infected or have already tested positive. To date theres been no definitive evidence that the mom can transmit the virus to the baby while the baby is in utero. Reporter while dr. Goss is focusing on mothers, thisoc is part of the babies. We want to know the extent to which theres a risk of newborns getting sick themselves. Soon to be moms and their babies are known to have weakened immune systems. That can be a risk for some infants with some bacteria. Reporter when diseases threaten adults, the body releases certain chemicals to defend itself. But for those battling coronavirus, that reaction is somehow backfiring since it appears to be making people even more ill. Infants havent developed that kind of immune response yet. Historically thats put them at higher risk of getting sick from other diseases, but it might actually be protecting them somewhat against covid19. Those two things can seem to be in contrast to each other. It does appear that much of the clinical illness comes from the inflammatory reactio to the virus because only the older se heavily impacted by covid19. And now your study aims to find out why. Yes, exactly. Reporter in the meantime, with so much still unknown, hospitals across the country are relying on heightened restrictions to protect moms and their babies. We checked with kaiser permanente, sutter health, ucsf, stanford, and san jose Regional Medical center. All have instituted strict novisitor policies and are only allowing one support person to join women in the delivery room. Obviously theres nothing more in the world that i want than my husband to be by my side, and so at this point we think that hell be allowed to come to the birth. But we dont know. Reporter Kyra Woodward hopes the study will reveal the actual risks so hospitals can make informed decisions on whether to ease up on restrictions or institute more of them. If it is found that it is safer for me and the hospital staff and the baby that theres less people in the room and my husband cant be there, then thats a choice were willing to make. Reporter so far at least 500 pregnant women have agreed to be part of the study. Doctors plan to track the medical progress of the moms and their babies for several months after the birth. But the initial findings are expected to be released within the next couple of weeks. With the investigative unit, im bigad shaban. A group of Mountain ViewHigh Schoolers are putting their quarantine time to good use. Theyve developed a website and program to find people willing to deliver groceries to high risk people. Each volunteer is matched with someone in need. Theyll go shopping toer that person, then drop off the food at their house. Theyre also helping health care workers. We had way more time than we ever had before, and it was just very difficult to see that our community and our neighbors around us were suffering maybe in ways that we werent. And it kind of felt like we asked the youth when were healthy, to go out and do these things. So far they have 30 volunteers on the peninsula and are thinking about expanding to other areas.
