Welcome to today. It is nice to have you along with us on friday morning. Were so happy its friday. We are, savannah. Good to see you. We do have a very busy day and a lot to get to, including that breaking news in georgia. The overnight arrest from a father and son accused of murdering a black man who was jogging in their neighborhood. We will have a live report just ahead, savannah. We will. But were going to start with the nation bracing for this mornings new jobs report. It is expected to be a stunner. Record unemployment because of the coronavirus. Tens of millions of americans out of work and in desperate need of help this morning. Tom costello begins our coverage. Tom, good morning. Good morning, savannah. These are breathtaking numbers showing the greatest increase in unemployment in 20 years. Nearly 20 million americans out of work in april alone, double what the country saw in the 2007 to 2009 economic crisis. It is the biggest, most dramatic jump since the Great Depression. The Labor Department reporting april Unemployment Rate jumped to 14. 7 , with 20. 5 Million People losing their jobs. The president reacting this morning. As president , we had the strongest economy in the history of the world, the strongest economy weve ever had, and we had to close it, which is artificial. We artificially closed it. Reporter jobless numbers more dramatic since the Unemployment Rate in february was 3. 5 . The economic mess forcing some across the country to seek help from local food banks the first time in their lives. Myra is a server in atlantic city. Part of leisure and hospitality. I am ready to go back, i need money. But i want to do it in a safe environment. Reporter the pandemic taking a toll on trade, transition, as well as construction. Also feeling the pain, retailers from Small Businesses to big box stores. Nieman marcus did. As well as others. Seattlebased store and jcpenney with lord taylor planning to revamp inventory. President trump says hes looking for a bounceback later this year rainfall im viewing the Third Quarter as a very important quarter. As i said, that will be a transition. I think you can almost say a transition into greatness. Next year will be a phenomenal year. Experts promise getting back to where we were isnt like flipping a switch. The Federal Reserve bank telling savannah reopening will be a slow process and the Unemployment Rate wont tell the full story. I think the number tomorrow will probably be Something Like 16 or 17 . I think the real number is probably around 23 or 24 . Its devastating. Reporter thats the head of the Federal Reserve in minneapolis speaking yesterday, echoing what many people believe is true. The real Unemployment Rate in this country is probably closer to 23, 25 . To put it in perspective, the country has now lost more jobs, all the jobs we recreated and gained since the great recession, we have lost those jobs in over a decade. A couple months ago we were talking record unemployment, low unemployment in this country. Now we are at record highs. The question is which parts of the country come back and which will be vulnerable. Which industries struggle to regain footing. Savannah . Those are the questions we want to pose. Turn to one expert, our colleague over at cnbc, the host of squawk box and New York Times columnist. Andrew, there arent enough words in the dictionary to express how bad this is expected to be, a real gut punch in terms of the jobs report. Tell us why that doesnt capture the picture. Thank you. We talk about the statistic. Every statistic has a name and family behind it. One of the reason it doesnt count it, there are a lot of people not seeking a job, they wont be counted. The number the Labor Department said today, the number is likely to be 5 higher. Were talking 19, 20 in reality. One of the things we talked about, you were looking to see if losses were confined to sectors we expect, entertainment, travel, retail, or whether there was contagion, in other words that it spread beyond. What did you find . For the most part confined to the areas you would imagine. Thats a good sign. The other thing, if you call it a good sign, nearly 80 of jobs, workers no longer working believe it is temporary, believe they have been furloughed. Thats what they think. It suggests if they get back to work, we could have a faster recovery. One other thing to mention, the inequality of this. When you look through the numbers, Unemployment Rate for people that dont have a High School Diploma is 22 . Thats against people that have a college diploma, which is only 8. 4 . It shows the schism in this country of whats happening. How do people make sense of this and seeing wall street rally. Wall street is looking 12 months out from now, not looking at today. Youll see the stock market, people are hopeful, hoping 12 months from now, the world looks a lot better. And that disconnect is hard to stomach of course. Andrew ross sorkin, thank you very much. Hoda, send it to you. A breaking story overnight where a man accused of chasing and killing a black man. Blayne alexander joins us with this story. Hey, blayne, good morning. Reporter hoda, good morning to you. A former Law Enforcement officer and his son travis face charges of murder and aggravated assault. It comes after days of protest not just in georgia but around the country. The director of Georgia Bureau of investigations tells me the video was a key piece leading to those arrests. Reporter this morning, a father and son behind bars. They are charged with murder and aggravated assault in the death of a 25yearold. Overnight, his family says it has been a long wait. Release, our family, that we know they are behind bars but we still have a long process to go. The shooting happened in february but the release this week of this video showing the altercation quickly sparked a national outcry. If we can get involved when theres an active crime scene, thats better for people. Celebrities including lebron james, Serena Williams and taylor swift demand justice, President Trump expressed confidence. Im sure theyll come up with what happened, it is a sad, very sad thing. Reporter the two men armed are seen following arbery running down the street. They confront arbery and after a scuffle hes eventually shot dead. Nbc cant verify what happened before and after this video. Arberys family said he was unarmed and just out for a job. A jog. What justice looks like is these men behind bars for the rest of their lives, a public lynching. They believe he was the man involved in recent home burglaries. This 911 call by an unknown caller was recorded shortly before arbery was killed. Someone breaking in right now. No. Its open, under construction. Hes running right now. There he goes right now. According to a Police Report, gregory mcmichael, a former police officer, claims arbery began to violently attack travis, and the two men then started fighting over the shotgun. Mcmichael says his son shot arbery in selfdefense. The case is now on its third prosecutor. The previous two recused themselves over possible conflicts of interest. Now ten weeks later an arrest. But those demanding justice say this is just the first step. Today supporters have organized a virtual run using the i run with ahmaud. They urge everyone to run or walk 2. 3 miles to represent the day arbery was killed. Thank you. In the meantime the coronavirus outbreak has now hit very close to home for the president. The white house is now going to ramp up testing around him after a member of the military who serves as a personal valet to the president tested positive for the virus. Nbcs Peter Alexander joins us from the white house peter, good morning. Reporter savannah, youre right. That coronavirus scare is hitting very close to home for President Trump. The man testing positive is a military valet, whose duties bring him to the oval office they are raising new questions th about whether enough is being reporter the coronavirus hitting the west wing with his personal valet testing positive. It is a little strange. One of those things. Reporter the valet, a member of the navy, served the president lunch and diet cokes and other duties. I have very little contact with this gentleman. Know who he is, good person. Ive had very little contact, mike has had very little contact. Reporter a person saying the president was lava level mad when he learned the news saying he does not believe they are doing all they can to protect him. A source with knowledge of the situation calling it an operational failure. President trump says he and Vice President pence both tested negative on backtoback days wednesday and thursday, insistin the white house is now tightening its protocol. Testing is not a perfect art. No matter what you do, testing is not a perfect art so we test once a week, now were going to go to testing once a day. While the white house begins daily testing, the supply of those same tests nationwide remains far below what experts say is needed to reopen the country. Earlier this week White House Press secretary Kayleigh Mcenany dismissed the idea of everyone of tests for everyon returning to work. If we tested every single american in the country at this moment, we have to retest them an hour later and an hour later after that at any moment you could theoretically contract the virus. The notion Everyone Needs to be tested is simply nonsensical. President trump said to me yesterday his valets wear masks. He said a lot of people in the white house wear masks but covering this place over the last several weeks, ive almost never seep any official or any member of the white house wear masks inside the west wing savannah. All right, peter, thank you another big headline this morning, the criminal case against michael flynn, the former National Security adviser, has been dropped. What can you tell us about that. This is an Important Development we just saw happen here the Justice Department has now moved to drop its case against flynn who pleaded guilty to lying to the fbi about his contact with russias ambassador to the u. S. , fired by the president. Afte a review concluded flynn should never have been charged in the first place, arguing his statements were not material, not central to any investigation the fbi was conducting the president , who has been considering a pardon for flynn, he welcomed the news, praising flynn as a great warrior all of this is stunning reversal by the doj, igniting with officials that attorney general barr and the Justice Department are bowing to political pressure savannah. All right Peter Alexander with the relentless from the white house. Peter, thank you 7 15 hoda, back to you. Savannah, we have a lot to get to this morning, including the first on camera interview with the woman who accused joe biden of sexual assault. Nbc washington correspondent Andrea Mitchell has more on the claims shes making. Hey, andrea, good morning. Reporter good morning, hoda. Tara reades comments are her first on camera response to joe bidens strong denial of her assault allegation just a week ago with Mika Brzezinski on msnbc. As the Biden Campaign points out inconsistencies in reades account over the year. She thinks biden should exit the president ial race. Doesnt think that will happen a warning to some of our viewers, some of the language is graphic. In her response to bidens denial tara reade emotionally deciding what she said happened in the spring of 1993, describing being asked to bring then senator joe biden a gym bag in his Senate Office building. He greeted me he remembered my name. I said, here you go, senator i handed him the bag it happened very quickly. She alleges biden pushed her up against the wall in the and hands under her clothes. He had his hands underneath senate corridor and put his hands under my clothes. He had his hands underneath my clothes it happened all at once. He had one hand underneath my shirt and the other hand, i had a skirt on, and he went down my skirt and then up. Reade claiming he pulled back when she resisted. He pointed his finger at me and said youre nothing to me. Youre nothing i think thats the hardest thing. Biden has consistently denied these claims, repeating his denial thursday when asked about her new comments. In every case the truth is what matters in this case the truth is these claims are flat out false. A year ago reade was among several women who said biden had touched them inappropriately in a nonsexual manner biden later vowing to be more respectful of peoples personal space. In march, for the first time publicly, reade came forward with her assault claim she also said she had filed a complaint with the senate that did not mention assault. No complaint has been filed. The Biden Campaign issuing a statement thursday saying every day more and more inconsistencies arise. Women must receive the benefit of the doubt they must be able to come forward and share their stories without fear of retribution or harm, and we all have a responsibility to ensure that. At the same time, we can never sacrifice the truth. Asked if she would take a polygraph, tara reade said victims of violence should not have to and shes not a criminal but she would take one if biden did. Only portions of reades conversation with megyn kelly were posted online so far. Biden says no one recalls hearing about such an incident the lawyers who vetted biden for Vice President said they found no misconduct of any kind. All right Andrea Mitchell for us in washington, d. C. Andrea, thank you. Let us switch gears now. Time to get a check of the weather, including, yup, the story weve been talking about all week, the polar vortex for mothers day weekend what a gift, al. Our sevenday forecast expect the temperatures to cool off this weekend and very nice in time for mothers day. Oneonone with meld gates, along with her husband bill is leading a big push for the coronavirus vaccine. How close she thinks we are to it where she differs from the Trump Administration and dr. Fauci when it comes to the finding of that vaccine. Plus big news from the nfl overnight. The release of the 2020 season schedule we now know when the games will begin, but the question is what will they look
