I just want to survive for my family. I have two kids. Reporter she says she has plans for social distance and sanitizing, but nail salons are considered a highrisk business. And when any will open in the bay area is unclear. The same goes for this couple, who runs a yoga studio. We can reduce our class sizes. We can accommodate in multiple directions and multiple ways. But were not even allowed to even, you know, try. Theres a conviction in our heart that its time. Its time. Its time to open up. Its time to do it responsibly. Its just time. Reporter we observed little social distancing today among those who came out. Alameda county could possibly begin early stage two, allowing certain limited operations including Curbside Pickup sometime next week, but exactly when is unclear. The scene in livermore has played out across the country as frustration builds. The citys mayor weighed in. Demonstrations like today, thats not the way to convince the county that livermore is ready to open. Reporter as far as when more businesses can reopen the governor, and the Public Health department because were driven by data. And when the data show it is safe to open, we will have the guidelines in place. Reporter in livermore, Christie Smith, nbc bay area news. Up in napa, much the same scene as people gathered for what was billed as a freedom rally. The demonstration took place in front of the courthouse. Organizers say people are tired of the shutdown. They dont think its necessary. The county has some of the lowest numbers of coronavirus cases in the entire bay area. These people are arguing that businesses and the public should be given the freedom to make their own choices. How about freedom for businesses . If theres a Restaurant Owner that as a statement for covid doesnt want to open, then dont open. If theres a restaurant that wants to seat people 20 feet apart, then they should have the freedom to open and seat people 20 feet apart. And the people who dont want to come have the freedom not to come. Not to go several at todays rally say they plan to protest at the State Capitol next weekend. Joining us now, a covid19 testing officer for Santa Clara County. Doctor, this is really good news for people because ive seen the previous test. It seems rather invasive. Tell us about the new test versus the old one. Well, its not an old and a new test. Were still going to use the other more invasive test. So this is an additional test, but its easier. And this is basically a nasal swab, and it almost looks like a qtip. Its not exactly a qtip, though. The main points is that its going to be selfadministered for the most part so that the Health Care Worker can stand back six feet, and the person who is having the test will take the swab and insert it into their nostril, swab it around, and leave it for about ten seconds on each side, remove it, put it is in some transport medium, and off they go. So the benefit of that is that you can use much less personal protective equipment, which were in short supply of in many situations, and its more rapid, and it doesnt hurt. Its really something that i think people wont be afraid of. Doctor, we were looking at some video of you giving a demonstration yesterday. That was very nice of you to do so. Who can get tested in Santa Clara County . We hear the need for testing, the need for testing. Weve got the two tests now. Who can get them . Well, initially, you know, we were just testing symptomatic people. But i think as we move forward, we really want to test people who are at continued and will be at increased risk. So i think one of the largest groups are the frontline workers. So these are the people that you see in your grocery store, the bus drivers, the people in pharmacies, first responders, those type of people again who put themselves at risk every day when theyre face to face with people. So we want to begin the process of testing them, and they will do this not just one time, but were going to recommend and we are recommending in our new guidelines that they do this on a monthly basis. They get tested monthly . Were recommending it. Its not were not mandating it, but were basically working with employers to say, we would like to have those employees go in and have a test. Again, when you have a test once, it only tells you how you are on that day. So within the next few weeks, things may change. You could become exposed. You could become infected. So were going to recommend on a monthly basis for the most part. What about a test for antibodies . How is that coming as far as getting a test like that out to the general public . Its not quite there yet. This is the more important test to say if somebodys infected. A lot of research, a lot of work on a test that will tell you whether youve had exposure and were infected in the past. But thats not quite ready for prime time yet. Maybe a little later. Tell me about testing. I would think, just a guess, that a lot of people would definitely want to know if theyve got it, if theyve got covid19. Are you seeing a big reaction to the offer of testing . Well, we would like to see a larger reaction. Thats why were getting the word out. We made the change in guidelines that has gone out to providers, and were mobilizing our test sites. People can go to our website, the Santa Clara County Public Health department, and theres a portal there, a testing portal, that they can then find their closest testing site. It does require an appointment at this point, but were again moving quickly to mobilize additional sites. So we really want to make it easy for people to go in and be tested. All right. Doctor, thank you so much for taking some time and talking to us this evening. Thank you. All right. Helping those in need with free food. The Salvation Army in oakland made it happen. It held a oneday emergency drivethrough food box distribution earlier today. The church of jesus christ of latterday saints in oakland donated 1. 5 million to the Salvation Army to make this all happen. That was enough to give food to about 1,000 families. Take a live look outside at san jose. You know, clouds are heading this way, but its still mostly blue out there. Looking like a really nice evening. It was a gorgeous day. Rain is on the way, folks. Some parts of the bay area may be hearing thunder as well. Lets bring in meteorologist rob mayeda. Hes talking sunshine today and then rain and thunder, and hes got snow in there too. Rob, you got it all. Yeah. Were rewinding the calendar back to march as of tomorrow, and at least to start the beginning of the new week. Right now, though, youre seeing the combination of the clear skies for the most part in san jose. Now increasing clouds closer to San Francisco. These clouds have been thickening up during the day. Temperatures currently in the 60s across San Francisco. As we take you up to healdsburg, youre starting to see some of those darker skies and the rain falling. Starting to reach the coast in sonoma county. You can see it there into mendocino county. Highest rain totals will be in the hills of the north bay and santa cruz mountains. Look at the lack of rain in san jose and livermore. Whats going on there . Well explain more about the rain shadowing we could see for parts of the bay area while some of the coastal hills could get more than an inch of rain between now and monday. And, yes, the increasing chance of thunderstorms. Well have the timing coming up in our full forecast in about eight minutes from now. Thanks very much. Coming up next, another bay area tech giant joining the fight against coronavirus. How fitbit plans to help out. Plus the pandemic putting more people on the streets. Stunning new numbers about how much the homeless rate could surge. Adjusting and innovating to help out during this pandemic. Weve seen a lot of it. Now a San Franciscofaced company, fitbit, is joining the race. The Company Announced its going to shift its supply chain to start making ventilators. You can see that right there. This comes amid a shortage of ventilators. The ceo of fitbit said the Company Plans on making them lowcost. The company says its submitting its technology to the fda in the coming days for approval. How about something good in addition to what we just heard . How about donating hand sanitizer, n95 masks, and facial shields all in high demand during the pandemic. The sikh temple in union city did just that today as you can see. It invited the Alameda County firefighters to come over to the temple today and pick up all these much needed supplies. Rob mayeda joining us now, and i watch i follow rob to get behindscenes stuff thats going on. His dog, riley, is protecting him right now from all harm. Is that correct, rob . Yeah. Well, he knows where the treat dispenser is at all times. Hes attached to my hip practically. Hes guarding the wall right now. If you hear a Little Snoring in the background, its nothing. Its the dog. Blame the dog. Right now we got some cloudy skies into San Francisco. Notice the combination of low clouds, increasing mid and high level clouds around the bay area. Our temperatures were warm. Look at San Francisco earlier today in the low 70s. Now cooling into the mid60s. San jose a bit earlier upper 70s. Now 73 degrees. Still breezy with winds at 17 miles per hour. Walnut creek, increasing clouds. 76 earlier. Now 68 degrees. So an interesting spread of temperatures. Today the warmer of the two weekend days of a few areas including around morgan hill earlier that managed to reach the 80s. But now the wind is picking up. The clouds starting to increase. Its going to be muggy tonight. Temperatures by tomorrow morning only dropping to the upper 50s with rain chances around the bay area. Tomorrow rain will be the mix and well have temperatures in the upper 60s and low 70s with rain chances. Again, its going to feel a little sticky outside at least by our standards. The satellite radar view shows showers up toward mendocino county. Youve got the frontal bound right here and the massive cooler air aloft that will follow it into monday. Thats the time frame when we think well see increasing chances for thunder as we head into monday. Rainfall predictions highest among the north bay. On the other side of the santa cruz mountains, rains out on the west slope. As it descends down into the santa clara valley, you see lower rain totals by a factor of 5 to 1 and its playing out right there. Some areas could pick up close to a half inch or more. San jose maybe not so much through 11 00 tomorrow. The opportunity for more showers will be there. Starting out the north bay as we begin the day then shifting south by this time tomorrow, monday, isolated strong cells coming three. That is the window of opportunity during the day monday where we could see thundershowers. Even though its not widespread rain, could be locally intense at time. Its the cooler air pocket that will move through on tuesday. By wednesday and thursday, High Pressure starts to build in, and well see back to spring to almost summerlike weather. Look how the skies start to clear. Not too warm with that system off in the pacific northwest. That will keep High Pressure in check, but it should allow for temperatures to warm up for the second half of the week. So interesting weather headed our way tomorrow. Some rain at times, slight chance of thunder on sunday. I think a better chance for thundershowers with some small high, snow in the sierra near 6,000 feet for monday too. Then you see the showers start to move out tuesday. Then we begin to see temperatures rebound for the second half of the week. So if the warmup and the summerlike temperatures were too much too soon for you, a return to winter, spring, almost summer there in the next five days. Back to you. Rob, thanks so much for giving everybody what they want. Thanks a lot. Still ahead, traveling to the nations covid hot spot. Why one nurse set sail for new york city.
