We begin in San Francisco where just last night police dispersed crowds in the marina district. Someone flagged officers down concerned that people were not following covid19 safety rules. Now there are calls for expanded enforcement. Nbc bay areas Sergio Quintana begins our coverage tonight in the city. Reporter on a normal weekend seeing lots of people bunched together on the sidewalk would be of no concern. But during the covid19 pandemic, its a much different story. Outside businesses in the marina, people appeared to be standing very close to each other and only a few were wearing face coverings. Were going to see more of this. Reporter Jason Escamilla was in that friday crowd for a few minutes and understands why people are raising concerns. If youre sitting at home, checking out twitter, maybe id be saying the same thing. But it was a beautiful day. People wanted to be out. Reporter this afternoon, quite a different situation. San Francisco Police officers parked along Chestnut Street to make sure another group didnt form. Sfpd confirms that officers talked with Business Owners about the crowds friday and told people to disperse. Yesterday was just kind of like a storm of events. Reporter the owner of howells wine bar, one of the businesses where the crowd gathered, said he appreciates the quick action by police. We can only control this small Square Footage of space in front of us. So if someone is, you know, ten feet down the way and they decide to stop and theyre drinking a togo margarita or Something Like that, i have no control over that. So luckily the San Francisco Police Departments around to disperse that. Reporter the warnings are there. Signed are posted reminding people to take their wine home when picking up togo orders. I dont think people are comprehending. Reporter city leaders say theyre concerned. The fact that people werent Wearing Masks and they were so, you know, cluttered together, im like, oh, god, no, you know. I i was it was very upsetting. Reporter supervisor Katherine Stefani says she hopes people arent getting complacent and called on the Police Department to expand enforcement if people continue violating the rules. A lateseason storm coming this way, bringing rain to the bay area. Meteorologist rob mayeda joining us now. Rob, maybe a Little Thunder too. Yeah. You know, theres a better chance of it i think on monday. But now maybe were upgrading those slight chances to sunday as well. Lets take you outside to San Francisco. Weve had a few passing light rain showers off to the north. Some cloudy skies rolling in. Actually mild temperatures. Were in the 60s still here at 11 00. Well take a look on the storm ranger mobile doppler radar. I think its going to have a busier day midday tomorrow as we begin to see showers, which for well begin to push a little farther to the south overnight tonight. Then you see all the clouds swirling offshore. That is the cold pocket of air as it approaches the coast heading into monday. That will give us a good chance of increasing thunderstorms which may include some small hail. For the next 24 hours or so, highest rain totals will be in the Santa Cruz Mountains but also notice in two portions of the central bay and the east bay from about 10 00 to 1 00 in the afternoon, well see those showers increasing around midday. Increasing chances of thunderstorms as we head towards monday. Snow in the sierra above 6,000 feet. You can see over the next two days some of the coastal mountains could go over more than one inch of rain. Dozens gathered in napa today for what was billed as a freedom rally to open not just the city but the county as well. The demonstration took place in front of the courthouse. Owners argue businesses and the public should be given the freedom to make their own choices. Several at todays rally say they plan to protest at the State Capitol next weekend. Open up open up in downtown livermore today, chants of open up filled the area. Dozens rallied to support struggling businesses and to advocate for a safe but faster reopening. Many are Business Owners themselves who have plans for how to keep customers and themselves safe. We can reduce our class sizes. We can accommodate in multiple directions, in moment ways but were not allowed to try. Theres a conviction in our heart that its time. Its time. Its time to open up. Its time to do it responsibly. Its just time. Alameda county is expected to enter phase two sometime next week, allowing things like curbside pickup. As most counties prepare to move forward with loosening restrictions, cases continue to climb. Today the bay area reported 170 new cases. Alameda county saw a surge in infections with 51 more cases reported. Solano and Mendocino County did not report any new cases. Across california, there have been more than 76,000 people infected. In the last 24 hours, the state reported nearly 2,000 new cases, and nationwide there are nearly 1. 5 million cases. For the second time in a week, former president barack obama criticized President Trumps leadership during the crisis. The latest comments came during a virtual commencement address to students at historically black colleges. More than anything, this pandemic has fully finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what theyre doing. A lot of them arent even pretending to be in charge. If the worlds going to get better, its going to be up to you. Since leaving office three years ago, mr. Obama has rarely criticized the president publicly. The president s press secretary responded with a statement reading in part, President Trumps unprecedented Coronavirus Response has saved lives. Moreover, President Trump directed the greatest mobilization of the private sector since world war ii to fill the stockpile left depleted by his predecessor. Reporter instead of walking onstage to accept a diploma, tonight High School Senior elena jarrett was on national tv, introducing celebrities. My names Alina Jarrett and im a senior at saratoga high school. Reporter she was part of a special salute to High School Graduates that aired nationwide right here on nbc and featured encouraging words from former president barack obama, who urged grads not to be afraid. But if you listen to the truth thats inside yourself even when its hard, even when its inconvenient, people will notice. Theyll gravitate towards you. Reporter for the class of 2020, its pomp during unusual circumstances this year. Instead of walking to get their diplomas, about 200 graduates at Carondelet High School in concord rolled through their ceremony today. The grads at the all Girls Catholic High School got to experience the milestone inside their cars with their families. 17yearold ariel coates said while she appreciates the effort, she has mixed feelings. Its a little sad because evenly i want to be with my classmates im sorry. Obviously i want to be with my class mates and with my friends. But its okay. Its better than nothing, so im just blessed. Reporter tonight at los gatos high school, some students donned caps and gowns to take some final pictures con campus. Andres admits hes disappointed he wont be participating in the traditional ceremony on the front lawn. I looked forward to that moment for all of high school and for it not to happen, for this whole covid19 thing to just suddenly hit us, its painful. Reporter instead, los gatos High School Graduates will sign up for an individual graduation walk, which will be videotaped and air on tv in june. Some very creative students used inspiration from a video game to pull it off. Check it out. It just cracks me up. They created this Virtual World called blockley university. A recreation of the uc Berkeley Campus using the popular game minecraft. It included the usual speeches from guests and the chancellor. She acknowledges unprecedented time and graduation but also encouraged students to learn from this experience. The pandemic and its effects have been thrust upon us all, is how we choose to respond. We can let these weighty circumstances hold us down, decide to pick ourselves back up, to adapt, to push onward. The chancellor added that the class of 2020 will go down in the history books as one that achieved greatness in the face of unprecedented turmoil. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants one of the bay areas largest landlords to return a nearly 4 million loan. Pelosi released a Statement Today calling on Veritas Investments to return its Paycheck Protection Program loan. She said the program is designed to help vulnerable Small Businesses during the Coronavirus Crisis and veritas controlled more than 3 billion in assets in San Francisco. Pelosis statement amplifies the voices of critics of veritas who say the company has a long history of undermining tenants. A devastating scene here. 11 firefighters are injured after an explosion. This happened near Downtown Los Angeles at a commercial business that manufactures hash oil legally. Its a legal operation. 230 firefighters responded to a fire there. They entered the building. As they were coming out, thats when the explosion happened. You can see here the helicopter video of firefighters putting out those flames. Of the 11 firefighters injured, three are in Critical Condition but all are expected to survive. Theres a new warning from the World Health Organization concerning that mysterious covidrelated illness hitting children. The global death toll for children has gone up. The latest is a 9yearold boy in france. The w. H. O. Is now asking Health Care Workers across the world to be on alert and help the Health Community better understand the illness. Hundreds of cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome have now been reported among infants to young adults in the u. S. And in europe. W. H. O. Is telling doctors to watch for symptoms which include prolonged fever, rash, gastrointestinal problems, inflammation, and evidence of the coronavirus. The cdc made a similar warning earlier this week. A winery in yuba county decided to reopen, defying state and local orders. Meade hill winery in smartsville held a Tasting Event today. They say they took a very smart approach to it in smartsville. They took numerous steps to keep its premises sanitized, even taking peoples temperatures. Wineries out there, especially ones that are at vineyards in rural country that we can absolutely safely open, and thats what the citizens want. Health orders do not allow for wineries to open yet. Despite that, people showed up to the winery today. Well, it is our new normal. The latest adjustment, at Mccarran International airport in las vegas, take a look at this. Ppe vending machines. Yeah, the machines allow you to buy items like gloves and hand sanitizer. A less invasive covid19 test to help test frontline workers more frequently. Santa clara county Health Leaders revealed the new test yesterday. Its a nasal swab that you can gently use yourself. The new test is rapid. It doesnt hurt. You can perform it yourself. It doesnt go all the way to the back of your nose. Its right there in the front. You did just kind of test it yourself. It will come in addition to traditional testing. One idea among others is to make sure that most at risk of contracting the virus in their daily lives get this testing. We talked with the head of Santa Clara Countys Testing Task Force tonight. We really want to test people who are at continued and will be at increased risk. So i think one of the largest groups are the frontline workers. So these are the people you see in your grocery store, the bus drivers, the people in pharmacies, first responders. Those type of people, again, who put themselves at risk. Again, a lot less invasive. Health leaders in Santa Clara County recommend all essential workers now get tested once a mon month. Joining us now, rob mayeda. He is at home, and hes got a forecast with rain and hail and thundersnow. You got anything else i forgot to mention there . Maybe muggy, but now weve got that covered. Its in the 60s outside. You got some showers, clouds around San Francisco. And, yes, it is still in the low 60s. These would qualify sometimes for high temperatures around San Francisco when the sea breeze is strong. We did have a high up to 73 earlier. Still 62 degrees. Not quite as windy as earlier. Into san jose, its 66 degrees outside. Your air conditioner may try to kick on a couple time as round the south bay. Temperatures early in the upper 70s. So we got a lot of clouds, and weve got this weve been talking about this week, an atmospheric river. So this is air that is warmer, typically holds more moisture. What that also does is the clouds increase overnight, and the wind is out of the south. Its kind of keeping our temperatures up, acting a bit like a blanket. Notice the morning temperatures, upper 50s to never 60 to start the day. Though with passing showers at time during the day, were likely not to see temperatures as warm as today. Mostly mid to upper 60s from San Francisco over to oakland and from san jose southward, highs in the low 70s. Storm ranger picking up a few scattered showers from the top of san bruno mountains over towards east bay. Most of the action so far has been off to the north and east. Youll notice here the weather system has the band of clouds were seeing now. An unsettled cool air aloft which will help drive increasing chances of thundershowers, we think, as we go through the day tomorrow. Biggest rain totals will be here on the Santa Cruz Mountains, north bay hills, and maybe across the central bay. Lets take you hour by hour. Light rains at times and a brief rampup to those showers late morning to early afternoon across the central bay, and then it may come down in intensity as we head towards tomorrow evening. Before sunrise monday, models picking up on this. A pretty intense line of showers. Possibly isolated thunder before sunrise passing through the bay area. Thats the reason we think monday will
