Santa clara county Health Officers is confirming some 40 cases have been traced to a morgan hill fish Packing Company that distributes seafood to restaurants. Tomorrow employees will be tested, but tonight the girlfriend of one of the infected workers is talking about her fear. It could impact a lot of people here. Heres nbc bay areas cheryl hurd. They should shut down their company, test everybody. Reporter frustration from a young mother who doesnt want to share her identity. She says tonight that her boyfriend, who is a truck driver for morgan hills supplier for fish, recently tested positive for covid19. He had no symptoms. He was out in the public, was always told that he would be fine. Just to continue wearing a mask and do the proper precautions. Reporter she says her boyfriend took those precautions but like many people who work here at the plant, was afraid to speak up for fear of losing their jobs. Lusaamerica wasnt doing anything about it. They were still having people go into work even though there was a lot of people covid positive. Reporter santa clara countys Health Officer confirming today there was a cluster of covid19 cases at the plant. The county set up testing in collaboration with the company, and over the course of a day tested everyone there and identified 38 more people who were positive from the company. Reporter Company Officials releasing a statement saying they are committed to providing a safe Work Environment and that employees at the facility have been tested. The majority are asymptomatic, and those who tested negative will be retested as a precaution. For this young mother, what the company is doing is not enough because her two children are now at risk. My kids have been around their cousins. You know, one of my nephews had asthma, so its so upsetting that they dont take any of that into consideration. Reporter in morgan hill, cheryl hurd, nbc bay area news. New at 11 00, a terrifying scene in San Francisco. Take a look. Five people, including a 2yearold, were injured by a falling tree branch. This is in Washington Square park right there in north beach. This is video that was uploaded to the citizen app just a few minutes after that branch fell. The child was taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons. The four other victims were treated at the scene. So could have been a lot worse. Now, a similar incident played out, you might recall, about four years ago at the same park there in north beach when a 100pound branch broke off and landed on emma zau. She was paralyzed from the waist down and suffered brain damage. She received a 14. 5 million settlement from the city of San Francisco. If you stepped outside this evening, you felt it. Still hot even at night after a blistering day. This is a live look over san jose where the city has opened up cooling centers in the midst of this pandemic. People can usually escape to the sun valley mall for some airconditioned shopping or a movie. But with covid19 closures, theyre focused on bringing solutions home. Reporter the city of san jose opened five cooling centers with social distancing requirements tonight. They will be open through thursday. In walnut creek, with limited cooling options milkshake. Santa clara countys board of supervisors unanimously approved a proposal to extend the moratorium on evictions for renters who cant pay their landlords during this pamndemic. The current moratorium is expected to expire this sunday. Todays proposal asked for the deadline to be pushed back august 31st. Governor newsom has to sign off on it before the extension is granted. Contra costa county board of supervisors unanimously passed a similar ordinance tonight. That continues an Eviction Moratorium for renters three july 15th. It also doesnt allow rent increases through the same date. Lets take a look at the newest numbers. New cases keep piling up here in the bay area. Heres the latest. A surge in Alameda County with 112 new cases reported today. Alameda county remains the hardest hit county in our region. Santa clara county, 24 new cases. San mateo county with 71. There have now been nearly 13,000 cases overall in the bay area. A big announcement from the governor today. We can start moving into phase three, just not everyone. Phase three means salons and barbershops are able to see clients again. Only three bay area counties have the green light to move forward. You can see them there. Napa, solano, and sonoma counties. Those salons have to follow new guidelines, which include screening everyone for symptoms, making sure everyone wears a mask, provide gloves and eye protection like goggles or glasses for stylists, come up with a disinfecting plan, and nix the magazines and refreshments in the waiting room. Haircuts, coloring, blowouts and Hair Extensions all allowed, but things like shaving, waxes, threading, eyelash extensions and man cures are not. This all means sharpen your shears and clean your combs. Salons and barbershops are scrambling to reopen. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney found a salon in napa county where business is already booming. Im just so happy to work again. Its going to be sitting here. Happy dance, happy dance. Reporter the parlor hair salon in napa has been closed since march 19th. Coowner angie door ten minutes after the governor gave the allclear. I had 27 Text Messages within ten minutes. Reporter clients like kay mulasky have been dying to be here. I think our selfpresentation and how we feel about ourselves is not unimportant, and these people do create a vital service. They help us look well. And if you look well, you feel better. Reporter in the bay area, solano, sonoma, and napa have been cleared by the state to reopen but only napa has been given the go ahead. Everyone has to wear a mask and that can be a problem. I couldnt stay clean around her ears because the mask would be in the way. Also when doing the front, all the hair is going to fall into the mask. Reporter temperature checks are now mandatory. Dr. Sara cody says shes worried about much of the state reopening so soon, particularly houses of worship being allowed to open. Dr. Cody says gatherings are important but if someone there is sick, it would be hard to keep the virus from spreading. The new normal for twitter and President Trump does not like it. The suspect known to locals for being volatile with mental issues has a history of making threats. So why was he walking the streets . As Investigative Reporter Jaxon Van Derbeken tells us, police say they tried to help but simply couldnt. Reporter at age 94, leo hanzal was a father in his neighborhood, known for growing tomatoes outside his house. Leo told neighbors he and his family had fled the nazis in europe and that he had found peace in glen park. But on memorial day, his long life came to a senseless end. He was apparently quite an amazing guy with a long life behind him and, you know, was not ready to go, and his neighborhood was not ready for him to go. Reporter mrs. Say police sa walking on elk street at 8 00 in the morning when he was attacked for no apparent reason. San Francisco Police quickly arrested peter rocha, 53, who is homeless. You look like you need a beating. Im going to beat you up. Reporter shawn says thats what rocha told her on Christmas Day as she was walking her dog, insisting the Neighborhood Park was for humans, not animals. She called police. They had had other reports of him. They effectively said there was nothing they could do because he hadnt hurt anybody. Reporter San Francisco city supervisor Rafael Mandleman confirms that police repeatedly offered rocha help, but he refused. He was clearly a very unwell individual. Reporter the supervisor says had the city been more aggressive in seeking a Mental Health conservatorship to force the suspect into treatment, han hanzal might still be alive. It is even more tragic for the fact it feels like it could have been avoided. Very sad for that neighborhood. We have new video of a fire in Alameda County. It started at a homeless encampment and then spread to the parking area of the crowne plaza hotel. This is in union city. Several rental cars caught fire. It happened this afternoon but crews were able to put it out fairly quickly. Thankfully no one was hurt. A piece of World War Ii History is on the move. The ss Jeremiah Obrien was moved out of its home port today so fire investigators can get a full look at the damage done by that massive warehouse fire over the weekend on saturday morning. Our sky range was above the scene today. Spot fires have been flaring up inside whats left of the warehouse right there on pier 45, which was filled with millions of dollars in fishing and crabbing gear. Inspectors are hoping they can get inside by the end of the week. At which point they will start the very tedious, scientific, and timeconsuming process of delayering the tons of material that have collapsed down to the base footprint of that pier. As for the historic ship, beautiful to look at here, one of the two remaining world war ii liberty ships, will temporarily now dock at pier 35 north. Court is back in session in contra costa county, but there are lots of new rules to follow. Everyone has to wear a mask. If your temperature is over 100 degrees, you are not allowed in. Also the number of people allowed in the courtroom at once is down to 15 from 50. Judge baskin says social distancing rules will probably make selecting a jury take longer. The jury pool might also get slimmer. This time its nicks next door in los gatos. In a facebook post, the owner says hes spent the last couple of months thinking about what the Restaurant Business will look like postpandemic. Because theres so much uncertainty, hes now decided to close down. The bay area native opened the restaurant 13 years ago. Only a few more days to order a pie at vitos pizza in east san jose. The restaurant will close for good this coming sunday. Vitos opened in 1979. In just about 12 hours, the first indoor mall in Solano County will open to shoppers. The Solano Town Center in fairfield reopens at 11 00 a. M. Tomorrow. Shoppers will see some changes. Not just people, but cars have to social distance as well. Theyll have to be parked at least six feet apart. Also a limited number of restrooms will be available for shoppers. Masks are not required inside the mall, but individual stores may insist you wear one before youre allowed to go shopping inside. Wineries are getting ready to welcome guests back now for tastings. Katherine hall of napa valleys hall wine says the last few months have been tough. Half of their business comes from their tasting rooms, but they adjusted and didnt have to furlough any employees. The folks that were working the tasting room are now conducting online tastings. They can have a party with zoom, and they can have one of our senior educators world cup through a flight of wines with them. Creative ideas but they just want to bring everyone back. When wineries do open, all of them, things will be different. Reservations will be required to keep tasting rooms for getting too crowded. And those spit cups for leftover wine, well, theyll now be disposable. Reopening plans are in the works at theme parks across the country. That includes six flags discovery kingdom in vallejo, Six Flags Hurricane Harbor in concord. While they wait for the green light, they are making changes like adding hand sanitizing stations and social distancing on rides. So people will have to reserve the date and time they want to visit the park. There will be a thermal Imaging Technology used to screen the temperatures of guests and employees before they enter as well as touchless bag checks. For contra costa, alameda counties, this will be my warmest here with those low 100s through walnut creek, antioch, danville, and also right down to pleasanton. You head over the east bay hills, and were not nearly as hot. Thats because of a little breeze off the bay. Thats why were looking at 88 in hayward. The peninsula, the warmest, 95 in palo alto. As you head more up the peninsula to san mateo and daly city, things really begin to drop off. Thats from an ocean breeze that will keep us at 69 in the marina. But notice in downtown, i have you at 80 and the mission 82. North bay, 100 in napa. 99 clearlake. 95 here in santa rosa. We have the heat with us now but i want to show you what were also following.
