Then in our sunday closer, a conversation about george floyd, minneapolis and a painfully familiar sight to many of our fellow americans. And lets begin this morning right there in minneapolis where there was another citywide curfew, but protesters were out for most of the night. A different scene, though, than what that city saw on friday night. Nbcs Gabe Gutierrez has been in minneapolis all week for us. Good morning. What does it look like there today . Reporter good morning. The overnight crackdown appears to have worked. This is the Police Precinct downtown, heavily fortified with concrete barriers right over there. After days of chaos, the governor here in minnesota activated the states entire National Guard for the first time in its history. All this as tensions flared in many cities, exposing deep divisions across the country. Overnight authorities in minneapolis fought back. They have triple the amount of Law Enforcement in minneapolis here tonight. Look o look out. Reporter the National Guard appearing to fire paint canisters to encourage residents to stay home. From new york to seattle, miami to los angeles, d. C. To chicago. Another restless night in america. We cant peacefully protest in the streets without getting tear gas thrown at us for what . Reporter a country in chaos. I applaud the vast majority of the individuals who came here to make true and lasting change peacefully. But to the rest of you, im here to call you out. For your recklessness and for your obscene disrespect to the righteous cause that you are trying to hijack. Reporter to try and restore order, many cities imposed curfews. Many were ignored. In nashville they set city hall on fire. In brooklyn after protesters tloouf projectiles at Police Vehicles, they drove through the crowd. The rising tensions came a day after fired minneapolis officer derek chauvin, scene in this video kneeling on George Floyds neck, was charged with thirddegree murder and manslaughter. Security video appearing to show a struggle in the backseat of a police vehicle. For most of the week protests escalated. This Police Precinct burned on friday night. Rioters took over the street. Target saying it was temporarily shutting more than 170 Stores Across the country. The family returned to the Mexican Restaurant they have run for 16 years, now shattered. It was heartbreaking to see everything you worked for to be thrown out the window. We understand why. We understand the pain behind everything and its just a hard time for everyone. Reporter right now in minneapolis, it really is an incredible sight. Much of the downtown remains boarded up. 4,000 members of the National Guard have deployed and more are on the way. Again, willie, a much quieter night after an Aggressive Police crackdown, something we havent seen this past week. Willie . Gabe gutierrez starting us off in in new york city, as mentioned, police made more than 100 arrests overnight as the protests that started off peacefully turned violent. Late saturday night, the citys mayor called for calm but stopped short of declaring a curfew nbcs kathy park is in brooklyn. Good morning reporter good morning to you, willie. What started off as peaceful protest in the afternoon and quickly took a dramatic turn by night. The bulk of the activity was here in brooklyn as well as manhattan. Here at the Barclays Center at one point overnight there was a tense confrontation between police as well as protesters these protesters were on the move at one point, shutting down the Manhattan Bridge there were disturbing images of dumpsters, trash cans, and Police Vehicles going up in flames, store fronts being smashed in, looting taking place as well. Video has also surfaced showin two nypd vehicles pushing into crowds of demonstrators, saying the vehicles were struck by rocks, as well as other objects. Mayor de blasio came out sayin anyone basically talking about these violence and promoting this violence and agitating this violence, he said arrests will be taking place. In total, as of this morning, we know 120 people were taken into custody and several officers were injured as well it was certainly a tense night here in new york city. Kathy park in brooklyn, thank you very much. Across the country in california, the governor declared a state of emergency in los angeles after protesters blocked traffic, set police cars on fire, and streamed onto city buses. Nbcs Erin Mclaughlin is in l. A. Good morning. Reporter good morning, willie overnight, the National Guard has been deployed here to california the city of l. A. Is under curfew after what began as a peaceful protest in an upscale area of los angeles to protest the death of george floyd, devolved into total chaos. Store fronts vandalized, cars, police cars smashed and torcheds police fired tear gas, as well as rubber bullets, to disperse crowds of protesters now, some were violent others told me they were there to peacefully take a stand against police take a listen. The cops are way too comfortable. They know they can get away with it cops know they can kill black people and nothing happens today, i dont want to come back here they better know today that they cant do that. Do that. Reporter mayor Eric Garcetti says this is the heaviest moment hes experienced as an l. A. Resident that curfew lifts at 5 30, in over an hour willie Erin Mclaughlin in los angeles, thank you very much protests continued last night outside of the white house as well and across washington where police broke up crowds by firing tear gas and pepper spray at protesters. This as President Trump and attorney general william barr blamed leftwing anarchist groups for the National Violence Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is outside the white house. Kelly, good morning. Reporter good morning, willie as weve seen in other cities, the National Guard was activated here, but this is the only National Guard that reports directly to the secretary of defense and the president. President trump says that he believes many elected officials must get tougher on those agitators and those causing violence, who he says are part of a radical left activism that seeks to cause chaos, not seeking justice for george floyd. Back in washington, the president is taking on a new adversary. My administration will stop mob violence reporter as american cities, including the blocks around the white house, erupt with anger over George Floyds death in Police Custody the president called out those steering protests to violence and destruction, speaking after the rocket launch in florida the memory of george floyd is being dishonored by rioters, looters, and anarchists. Reporter saturday, attorney general william barr said accountability for floyds death is coming with both state and federal investigations of the officers. That system is working and moving at exceptional speed. Reporter and barr delivered a warning after both minnesotas democratic governor tim walls and President Trump suggested some demonstrators in minnesota were out of state antagonists, claims they did not back up with evidence antifa are a lot of bad people they have to be taught you cant do this. Reporter barr says the department of justice is ready to prosecute rioters who traveled out of state to incite violence. Its a federal crime to cross state lines or use interstate facilities to incite or participate in violent rioting, and we will enforce those laws. Reporter the president says he is prepared to send military police to back up Law Enforcement and National Guard units. Governors are required to formally ask for military assistance after tweeting what looked like an invitation for more protests, tonight i understand is maga night at the white house the president insisted he was not stoking racial conflict. By the way, they love africanamerican people. They love black people reporter and along with his get tough message, the president also said he and his administration stand with George Floyds family and Peaceful Protesters hes asking his administration, through the department of justice, to work quickly on the investigation for any civil criminal penalties against the officers a process that will take some time willie Kelly Odonnell at the white house, thank you chuck todd is nbcs political director and moderator of meet the press. Chuck, good morning. Its good to see you at the end of what has been a stunning week on so many levels. Weve come to take for granted a president and a moment like this would try to be the healerinchief, make a grand speech and try to bring the country together a lot of what weve seen from the president , particularly on twitter, has been just the opposite he talked about protesters being greeted with vicious dogs and ominous weapons if they tried to assemble outside the white house. He suggested perhaps a maga, make America Great again rally, outside the white house. How does this president view his role in this National Moment reporter well, i think thats the it doesnt appear he views himself as a healer, though he would probably dispute that he says, im trying to heal, people just arent listening to me but i think we saw this sort of different tone to the president. It was interesting to watch him yesterday. You had the bomb thrower on twitter, but then you had clearly staff it appears staff intervened and his Public Comments yesterday were all more reserved or an attempt to tone down or an attempt to sound as conciliatory as he can be. But, look, willie, to be generous here, this is not in his tool box you know, he has had a career where he runs towards controversy, he looks at divides and thinks, how do i take advantage of the hes not the guy that says, wheres the glue to see if i can bring everybody back together. Yeah. And stark contrast this week, as we look at the president ial campaign, because its want just what we see in the streets after the death of george floyd in minneapolis, but we also passed the 100,000 dead threshold from coronavirus. We passed the 40 million american threshold of people who are out of work in just the last ten weeks, and we saw Vice President joe biden trying to offer a contrast, albeit from his home, but a contrast in how he would serve as president and how he might heal the nation and that you know, well see if this lack of what appears to be a lack of empathy from the president at times, i mean, you know, not looking like he wants to talk about anything other than the virus and the impact of the virus on the health. He seems to be looking for any way to say, lets talk about i mean, just think about how he spent his day yesterday. He flew down to see the launch of the rocket. While that is some positive news for the American Space program, it just felt out of sorts, right . The country, cities, literally smoldering thi and its just i just think instinctively this is clearly out of his comfort zone, not something hes comfortable doing. I know there is supposedly some talk of an Oval Office Address you would expect Something Like that from any other president. I think theres a real question of whether he can effectively use an Oval Office Address in a way that previous president s have we will see chuck, thank you very much, as always we will look for much more this morning on american in crisi when chuck is joined by former police of chief in orlando and potential running mate for joe biden. A little later this morning, the crew dragon spacecraft will dock with the International Space station. The spacex rocket with two nasa astronauts on board, as chuck mentioned, blasted into orbit on saturday afternoon from the Kennedy Space center in florida. It was the first manned launch from u. S. Soil in nearly a decade the astronauts will spend anywhere from one to four months at the space station. Good sunday morning. After an interesting saturday complete with thunderstorms and even hail in some parts of the bay area todays weather pattern will be much calmer, but we are expecting cloudy conditions to remain along with the cooler temperatures comfortably in the 70s. In San Francisco 56 degrees. Definitely will feel muggy as we wake up this morning. Take a look at satellite radar. A lot calmer this morning. In through the afternoon 60s and 70s. Next on sunday today, Martin Luther king iii joins me on the death of george floyd and what his father would say about the scenes in the streets of america. And as we head to break, our photo of the week captured by Associated Press photographe julio cortez before midnight in thursday during the protest and rioting in minneapolis this protester in silhouette carrying the American Flag upside down in front of the glow of a burning liquor store. For the life behind every mask, the clock never stops and neither do we. We are back on sunday today with our coverage of the ongoing protests and riots across the country nearly a week after the death of george floyd in minneapolis. Congressman lewis has been at the front of the civil rights. On saturday, congressman lewis called for peaceful protests writing in part, to the rioters in atlanta and across the country. I see you. I know your sense of rage, sense of despair and hopelessness. Justice has, indeed, been denied for too long. Rioting, burning and is not the way. Sitins, be constructive, not destructive. Congressman lewis was a friend and contemporary of dr. Martin luther king jr. Im joined by Martin Luther king iii. Mr. King, good morning. Were grateful to have you on with us and get your perspective. Your father famously said the riot is the language of the unheard. Its a line weve heard quite a bit over the last week or so. Not justifying but explaining what were seeing in these streets. As you watch the images across the country, mr. King, how do you explain them . What are we watching in america right now . So, i dont know that beyond what we have heard every day, beyond what we are seeing and feeling, the frustration, the humiliation, the insensitivity. Over 50 years ago where my father was leading a demonstration in memphis, tennessee, and what he was leading was for sanitation workers to be treated like men. They had signs that said, i am a man. 50 years later, people are asking just for dignity and respect in terms of arresting a human being. Not a person ending up dying. If we see these incidence, we see a variety of people joining. Its not just black people. Its black and white, old and young. And so the answer is, people i think people need something very quickly, immediately. For example, in minneapolis, ultimately there may be more charges brought, but all of the world witnessed a man being killed. We all know this, in front of our eyes. And yet it took three or four days for an initial action. We say initial, but everyone there was complicit. So, why does the system take so long to work . And really,
