Is it effective . A stanford doctor tells us why this maybe the safest option. And spreading the message across the bay area. The new black lives matter mural in San Francisco. Tracking a few concern growing over a second wave of the coronavirus some states are changing their minds and slowing down their reopenings. Shops, restaurants and bars and beaches are getting more crowded and National Health experts are getting anxious. More than a dozen states are seeing a rise in cases of more than 25 . Today, florida reported its highest number of new infections since the pandemic began. People are getting tired. Its very alarming. Were not flattening the curve. Its reexpanding. South carolina declared a new state of emergency. And oregon put its reopening on hold. Less invasive but just as effective. The selfswabbing test for covid19 are safe, accurate and much more comfortable than the deep nasal swabs. Joinings us now epidemiology at stanford. Tell us about the results out today. We decided that we want to do a household transmission study to see how the virus was transmitted around households. It would be hard to get people to get the deep swabs done every day. For three weeks. So we decided first to try a study where we do the interior nose. So the not nostril. And compare those. We found that 29 out of 30 people had complete similar results across the board. And the one person who didnt have similar results actually had a positive test when he did his own. Compared to the doctor. So not only does this save swabs and ppe. It makes it easier and its less comfortable for the person who can swab themselves. We can offer swabs for people to do maybe at home for stay at home test kits. This is significant. More people can possibly get tested now. Its probably more affordable as well. It can streamline the whole process. Yeah, absolutely. Were doing one more thing. We looked at people who had symptoms. Were almost finished validating the same approach for people who dont have symptoms so we can offer this to people who have symptoms and people who dont. So were very excited. Is it uncomfortable still . Or is it really just kind of lie putting a q tip up your nose. It is like putting just the tip of the q tip in the inside of the nostril. And rolling it around. On both sides. We did it on an 8 month old baby and they didnt blink an eye. Where can we get the test . Is it prescription or buy it at the store . Or the hospital. This is basically just using the swabs in when ever somebody has a test available in a laboratory. All were saying is that which ever laboratory is doing the tests could just have the people swab their own noses. And hand those in. There are a list of acceptable swabs at the fda. Its a list of about 20 or 30. Its quite a number of different models and so if a laboratory is interested they can use those themselves. Great research. We appreciate it. Great results, very promising. And it probably will encourage people to get tested. Thank you. Turning attention to the weekend. Chief meteorologist is here. We need a smile.
