Now, if youre interested in getting tested at this site here at s. A. P. Center, they will be open through friday from 1 00 to 7 00 and then on saturday from 9 00 until 3 00. Live in san jose, scott budman, nbc bay area news. Scott, thank you. Not just the bay area. Cases are rising statewide. Take a look. Yesterday alone more than 5,000 people tested positive. 65 people died. On a national level, its been a while since weve heard from dr. Anthony fauci. Hes no longer part of those regular regular white house briefings. Today he testified before congress. Along with other medical experts, dr. Fauci says the country is taking great Financial Risks to be ahead of the game on producing a vaccine. He says the vaccine could be ready by this december. He also addressed those controversial comments from president trump. Over the weekend the president said, he told his people to slow coronavirus testing because its leading to more reported cases. Dr. Fauci denied he was ever ordered to slow down testing. I know for sure that to my knowledge none of us have ever been told to slow down on testing. Were going to be doing more testing, not less. He also stressed the importance for all americans to wear masks. Happening now, east bay students are holding a demonstration and march in berkeley. The black Student Union at Berkeley High school partnered with cals black Student Union, put this event together. This march is supporting black youth. Demonstrators started gathering about two hours ago at the ash by b. A. R. T. Station. They plan to march to the park across from the Berkeley Rose garden. As weve seen in the past few weeks Many School Districts are considering cutting essentially relying on the General Police force to keep campuses safe and in doing so redirecting that money to other school services. Tomorrow oakland unified will debate this proposal. Today it was San Francisco. Heres nbc bay areas jackie ward. Reporter the San Francisco board of education commissioner i spoke to said todays resolution vote was much bigger than the current agreement between the district and the police department. Its about a nuanced conversation that has to happen with several city agencies, including police, on how we can keep all our students safe. Alison collins is calling on the city to continue investing in the community in order to help educators focus on their jobs and move away from the current memo of understanding or mou with police. We want to move away from the mou. It hasnt been effective in managing police and it also hasnt been effective in really clearly defining what we should be doing better as a staff. Reporter this conversation is about more than just taking funds from Police Coverage and directing it towards social workers and counselors. After all, the School District only pays about 45,000 for half of a Single Police officers salary. As for captain williams, the head of the School Resource officer program we also need the police commission, you know, and the Mayors Office and, you know, shes initiated a lot of great reforms to redirect funds into communities, and we know that when communities are better resourced, you know, they dont come in in trauma, crisis, we have less conflicts. Reporter the most recent agreement between police and the district expired in january 2019, but it was in effect august 2018 when board member collins says police violated it at the Balboa High School shooting. She says the board needs to look past basic agreements and focus more on communitybased wants to continue working with them. Quote, we firmly believe that our youth and School Resource officer programs serve as positive ways to build lasting and healthy relationships between our officers and youth, end quote. This clearly wont be something that will be resolved today. Now the district has to assess its staffing and review its security plans before getting it approved by the board. In San Francisco, jackie ward, nbc bay area news. Well, we have a couple of updates tonight involving a couple of different noose investigations at nascar racetracks. A dramatic turn of events at the talladega speed way late this afternoon, the fbi ruled there was no crime committed there. The noose in the stall of the own black driven Bubba Wallace was apparently not a noose. It was placed there last october and used to pull the garage door down. Meanwhile, the fbi is investigating a possible noose found at sonoma race way spotted hanging near a tree. The rope had been there for some time. In fact, a race way tenant remembers the rope hanging from that tree about seven to eight years ago, but it was not tied in a noose at the time. Over to the San Mateo County where disturbing messages were found spray painted in a few places around the city of pacifica. A Police Officer found the first message around 11 00 p. M. The sheriff announced that her department has implemented a series of changes demanded by activists known as the eight cant wait mandate. Thats in reference to george floyd. At least one supervisor, though, wanted to make sure the sheriff knew the board expected more. I want to be very clear and very direct. I am not prepared to accept the declaration that mission is accomplished or that the work on eight cant wait is done at this point. The board also passed new Justice Reform measures including one that requires a deputy to intervene to stop another deputy from using excessive force. Reverend bernice king paid tribute to the four children left behind when he was shot to death in a wendys parking lot. Its an act that sparked nationwide outrage and protests. I hope we will finally have the type of Police Reform for black and brown people that includes passion, grace, mercy. In the wake of brooks death, atlantas police chief stepped down. The two officers involved now face criminal charges. Rayshard brooks, breonna taylor, george floyd, we know their names well, and during the black lives movement weve seen different forms of art pay tribute to them. Mama. Mama. Mama. I cant breathe. Two bay area artists started art for george floyd. They got performing artists from around the world to share their narratives in this moment in history. Joining me now is one of them, san jose native, didi stephens. Thanks so much for joining me. Tell us about this creative project you created. Hi, well, thanks so much for having me on. I have a really goo mine, her name is courtney lloyd, and the two of us developed this project as a virtual protest. So basically were using our voices as performing artists to activate Citizen Engagement in the fight against for racial equality. We had some other artists join us on that. Danielle johnson helps to edit it. You can find out more about it on our website, www. Artforgeorge floyd. Com. Its really powerful, these video recordings. How did you get all these recordings sent in . Well, we just reached out to people that we knew. Courtney and i met at usc as students there. We were working on our masters in acting programs and that in and of itself is a very diverse program. And then the two of us had been doing a lot of theater and sandup comedy, and we just reached out to our friends and organically these happened to be people who immigrated from all around the world. What do you hope will come from this virtual protest, this video . We just really wanted to use our art to raise awareness by necking people to organizations that are doing the work. We really believe that you have to use what you have. So thats what we did. And, you know, we share that more on our website, and we also have a facebook page, art for george floyd. To get involved with that. This is also part of a fundraiser for color for change, what is that and how can people help out . Color for change is a nonprofit organization, like i mentioned, that is doing the work. Just everything you can donate money. They give you ways to reach out to your congressmen. A lot of information that they have on the site. So our goal was just to raise awareness about that organization and other organizations that are actually doing the work. Okay. A lot of resources on that webpage, and a powerful tribute and virtual protest. Well check it out. Deedee, art for george floyd. You did this with your friend courtney. Thanks so much for joining us tonight. Thank you so much for having me. Thanks, dee dee. Well, yosemite is making adjustments prompted by our spike in coronavirus cases. Yosemite is cancelling some of its camp ground reservations. A couple of weeks ago we told you the National Park began a phased reopening, but today park Officials Say most of those camp grounds that they reopened will close again. Of the six primary camp grounds only two will remain open, curry village, and 50 of the upper pines camp ground. The lodge and hotel will still take reservations. I think so many people because were all kind of at home now are fleeing and wanting to go camping into these National Parks. It is a great summer to do that. Its a great week to do that. The weather is nice. If you thought it was warm today, get ready for more. Heres jeff ranieri. Yes, raj and janelle. Some warm weather inland, but it really was a classic summer day here across the bay area. We had some fog at the coastline and then you had that sunshine for the inland valleys. Our live highdef information camera right now. If you were stuck inside doing that work from home, i wanted to give you a view of, well, a pretty spectacular view of our tiburon camera looking toward San Francisco. You can see the low clouds and the fog that is starting to roll back in. Now, the ocean breeze was not Strong Enough to keep those inland valley temperatures down, so thats why it was a lot warmer out here in concord, up to 95 degrees. That was more than 10 degrees above our average. Also 95 in walnut creek and 95 in livermore. A lot happening on the weather pattern. So let me show you this wider view again. We had this area of hot high pressure, henning to pull up the heat from the south. The circulation around us and then the system offshore is also pulling in some humidity. You may have felt just a little bit of humidity today and that humidity is actually helping to fuel some thunderstorms across the sierra. The Higher Elevations when you get some heat and humidity, it really helps to provide this lifting mechanism, so thats why all of those thunderstorms are isolated over the sierra right now. I think well also have a chance of that tomorrow. So if youre traveling up that way the next 24 hours, just watch out for some of these thunderstorms across the sierra. Back here at home for tomorrow morning, we get sunny skies for the inland valleys, near the bay, near the coast, that fogs going to be back. Down to 63 in the peninsula. Also areas of fog and le clouds for the east bay, San Francisco, and the north bay, and well start with those 60s. Well get you a closer look at that, and you can see right here on this topdown view over the north bay, theres those low clouds, also through San Francisco, berkeley, oakland, and right down the coastline. Really looks like the south bay would be one of those sunniest locations tomorrow. Now, our temperatures as we move through tomorrow definitely going to be warming up. We have those upper 80s and also low 90s down there across portions of the south bay. So it is going to be a much warmer day as we move through tomorrow. And, of course, coming up tonight at 6 00, were going to take a full look at that sevenday forecast. Were going to send it right back now to you guys in the studio. Okay. Thank you, jeff. Up next, the tokyo games are postponed, but our bay area olympians are still active. Athletically and socially. Why the olympic spirit is important now more than ever. Stay with us.
