Well, this morning Governor Newsom will be in the bay area touting his plan to help the homeless by placing them in hotels amid the coronavirus. Now in the past 24 hours alone, the bay area added more than 500 new covid19 cases to its totals. Contra costa county saw the surge, reporting 169 new infections. Santa clara county added 104. And across the state the covid19 Positivity Rate is also rising fast. Today in the bays ian cole explains why the Positivity Rate is so critical and how it just got easier to track the trend at home. Reporter it turns out the majority of people who go to covid19 testing sites dont have the virus, thats still the case as many more are being tested statewide. A Record Number yesterday just shy of 106,000 tests were conducted yesterday. Reporter so naturally the total number of confirmed cases is up. Thats why state leaders are focusing more on the percentage of people testing positive and, unfortunately, thats rising, too. The governor says its gone up from 4. 5 to 5. 5 over two weeks. Hospitalizations have risen 43 , intensive care admissions up 37 . The reason we started to reopen our economy we saw a Positivity Rate remain very, very stable. The number of hospitalizations and icu for many weeks, arguably months, was stable. Reporter now all three indicators are climbing. Nationwide covid is rising in 29 states putting a strain on the health care system. In california were not there yet. In other states and the sunbelt were talking about test Positivity Rates of around 14 to 15 . Reporter dr. Hong says the increase here makes him nervous and the state must focus on being proactive to avoid what is happening in florida, texas, and arizona. With those states, youre getting to a place where we already know their hospital beds are being filled in. And i think what Governor Newsom is trying to do is nip it in the bud so we dont get to that place. Reporter to make it easier for people to track the key indicators, Santa Clara County added graphs to its dashboard showing the test Positivity Rate and trends among hospitalizations and icu admissions. You can see from home if were headed in the right direction. Ian cull, today in the bay. We expect the European Union to have a list of those allowed to fly in their countries. As the number of coronavirus cases are growing, it is actually a concern that the u. S. Will be on the list. It is not expected to. Today in the bays jackie ward is live at San Francisco international this morning with a lot more on this story. Good morning, jackie. Reporter good morning to you, laura. Right now the u. S. Has the worst covid19 outbreak in the entire world right now with nearly 2. 6 million cases. And of course the new surge of new daily cases that has happened within the last week is what has a lot of Health Experts saying this is part of the reason why americans will most likely not be able to travel to europe for the next 14 days. This will, of course, further hurt the economies on both sides of the atlantic. In the first ten months of 2019, the u. S. Hosts about 10 million europeans every year. A greek tourism minister says they love having americans over because they tend to stay longer, but they also understand the need for caution. Its very important for us to resume normal air travel, but we dont want to necessarily rush things. Reporter to further emphasize what we anticipate will happen today, two eu diplomatic officials told nbc news that the u. S. Is not on that list of countries. Back in march the eu imposed restrictions on nonessential travel to about 30 countries to ease the spread of the virus. Noneu citizens already living in europe are not included in the ban. But if americans end up not being allowed into the eu for the next couple of weeks, they can still go to britain which left the eu. However, britain has established a selfquarantine for 14 days for anyone who enters the country. From sfo, jackie ward, today in the bay. All right, good info there. Thanks, jackie. Were going to have a great day and still these wideranging temperatures across the bay area as we get a live look outside in San Francisco, we can see as you look in the distance there a little bit of fog there as we start out our Tuesday Morning and that will keep the city cooler. The inland areas will still have a hot day. So if youre in a spot like concord, you want to go out for a run, of course the Morning Hours will be best. So Half Moon Bay will drop back to the upper 50s. Well see fremont in the mid60s, it will be a nice evening as well. And then most of us will cool back down to the 50s. So were in this weather pattern where weve had some hot weather and also some gusty winds as the storm system passed by the north. Approaching the bay bridge, contra costa county, the freeways are moving smoothly. I saw a blip showing northbound there across the bridge but no problem and no cause for concern. We can see the lights all the way across. Back to you. All right. Take a look at this. New this morning a california woman is being treated for injuries after she was gored by a bison.
