Were only 2 1 2 weeks from opening day and the problems just keep mounting. Janelle wang joins us with the very latest. People were really looking forward to this, it was going to be a little bit of a respite, and now this. Reporter a lot of problems mounting, jessica. Today the as star pitcher tested positive for covid19 and hes out for two weeks. The giants had to shut down practice. They were supposed to have their first scrimmage of the summer but that had to be scrapped. Giants hoping to get test results back today and get back to practice tomorrow. Heres more insight on the testing issues and the situation at oracle park. I think when news comes out that a team has to suspend operations, our minds go to the worst case scenario. For the giants it wasnt that, they already had a couple of players in their system with positive tests. The concern may have been, is this a huge bigger outbreak. But in reality mlb has been having issues getting tests from players and getting the results, which are done at a lab in utah, can you believe that across all Major League Baseball teams, theyre all sent to one lab in utah. So there have been some bottleneck issues with getting those tests done and returned in a timely fashion. Just like the as were delayed over the weekend, now the giants suffered a similar fate. So it sounded worse than it actually is. The Bigger Picture is that, janelle, baseball cant continue to have these delays if they also want to run the operation that they do. Janelle, ive got to be honest with you. You have not heard a Big League Player come forward and say, i feel really comfortable, i know all the precautions are being taken, and i have every feeling in my mind and in my gut right now that well be fine. Youre not hearing that quote. In fact youre hearing the exact opposite. Youre hearing, im still deciding. Reporter so, yeah, more players could decide to opt out of the season and just forget the money and protect their family instead. As for the shortened season, 60 games in 66 days, brody says thats not a lot of room for error for teams, they have to play well right off the bat, there cant be more testing there is an or even weather delays in the midwest. Brody is the as pre and postgame host. He said 21 games in the first half of their season are played in california. So the as will have that advantage. Theyll have more stability, fewer road trips, and hopefully that will keep the team healthier. Fingers crossed for both teams. The as kick off their home game against the angels on july 24, that will happen in oakland at the coliseum. And the giants opening day, july 23. Thats down at dodgers stadium. Were all baseball fans, we want to see them come back but it seems problematic to get these players healthy and a lot of players may opt out, saying its risky for their family. It will be a challenge. Reporter a lot to digest for sure. Changing day by day. Thank you, janelle. We brought you the story over the weekend of the couple painting over a black lives matter mural. Reporter unlike many other americans you need to leave. Reporter their trip included being the targets of what they described as racial abuse. Asians pieces of [ bleep ]. Reporter this man was caught at a Carmel Valley restaurant hurling asian insults at an asianamerican family. Its unclear how it started but a waitress demanded the man leave. On the marin trail, another viral video shows a white woman appearing to tell an asianamerican family to go back to where they came from and vowing to call the police because they had their dog on the trail. You guys are just breaking the law. Reporter thats not true. Signs on the trail show leashed dogs are permitted. According to advocacy groups, antiasianamerican racism is on the rise across the u. S. Harrowing, dehumanizing incidents. Reporter since the start of the pandemic, theyve collected more than 2,100 reports of verbal harassment, racist bullying and hate crimes against asianamericans, 20 times what groups have recorded in past ye years. More than 800 of these incidents happened in california and 175 in San Francisco. Cynthia choi of the stop aapi hate reporting center blames the president and his repeated comments on china. As a way to distract from this administrations epic failure in containing the virus. Reporter when it comes to containing racism, there are no legal consequences for what these individuals said. But there are social ones. Get out, now reporter in the last two hours, the man caught on that video released a statement saying in part, my behavior in the video is appalling. This was clearly a moment where i lost control and made incredibly hurtful and divisive comments. I would like to deeply apology to the chan family. Weve also learned the woman from the marin county trail video has resigned from her job. Her employer, tulsa equities, told us they found her conduct, quote, extremely disturbing and do not condone racism of any kind. In San Francisco, lili tan, nbc bay area news. We have more information about Face Coverings. Today Health Leaders in Contra Costa County released new guidelines. The updated order calls for masks or some kind of Face Covering to be worn inside businesses or anywhere people would be six feet within each other. Also the county released specific guidance that businesses can refuse to serve or allow entry to someone who doesnt wear a Face Covering. The county says those who cant wear face masks because of Health Reasons are required to wear a plastic face shield with cloth to cover the gap between the mask and the neck. Its unanimous on the peninsula in san mateo county, you have to wear a mask or face a fine. The board of supervisors passed a resolution urging face mask compliance and launching an Education Program on its importance. Violating the order can be a misdemeanor. It falls short of fines that one supervisor wanted to impose on repeat offenders. He hopes the outreach effort will urge everyone to comply. Our fire danger today is much better than the last few days. However, we did have a grass fire in Contra Costa County which threatened dozens of homes, forcing some people to evacuate. It was at the cypress road and summer lake area of oakley. 30 acres burned, you can see there, and you can see the helicopter drops. Evacuations have been lifted and luckily, no one was injured. Windy weather today is fanning concerns that the largest brush fire burning in the bay area could potentially flare up. Fire is outside of gilroy. The cruz fire has burned 5,400 acres since sunday when it started in the afternoon. Its about 20 contained. The evacuations related to this fire are still in place. And jeff, in terms of the wind, what are we thinking . Well, it really doesnt look extremely bad. Were only looking at these sea breezes coming in, 10 to about 20 miles per hour. Theres a little bit of good news for the firefighters. Most of the thickest smoke is blowing away from gilroy although there are some air quality advisories for patches of smoke that could move in. Bottom line, again, no extreme wind events the next three to four days. As we start off the microclimate forecast, well take you outside to our live Sky Camera Network in the east bay. Plenty of blue sky, a little haze off towards the distance. Concord at 88 degrees. The good news, as ive been pointing out, well go down to cooler 60s by 10 00 and 11 00 tonight. We do have that ocean breeze with us. Its going to make it very enjoyable, especially by tomorrow morning, well be down to some cooler 50s. And a few 60s to start. By the afternoon, it goes a little bit hotter here. I have 94 in clear lake, thats my hottest. 92 in concord, 93 in antioch, 91 in livermore. Drops off in oakland at 76 with the bay bridge. Ocean breeze and colder with 66 in San Francisco. My extended forecast keeps it dry next seven days with some low 90s through the weekend. With this dry weather we thought it would be kind of fun to take a look back at when we had the wettest july. And that happened way back in july of 1974. Look at this data, we had 95 100ths of inch in oakland. As we round out this update right now, we can show that you we usually start to see that rainfall beginning to increase once we hit september and also october, as you can see in that chart here. Coming up, well take a look at the air quality across the bay area. And well give you a real good closeup look at that microclimate forecast. See you in 20 minutes. See you soon, thanks, jeff. The foggy glasses, and the muffled laughs. A simple piece of fabric makes a big statement i care. Wear a mask. Lets all do our part to slow the spread. Janelle wang here. Today data reveals how covid19 is spread through the air. We know its spread through respiratory droplets, from sneezing and causing. But Health Experts including from the World Health Organization today released more data saying it could be spread through singing or speaking loudly or breathe heavily and it can linger in the air for longer. Were seeing with covid19, even though a majority of the time the virus generates droplets that drop pretty quickly in front of you at six feet, there are instances of the virus traveling farther. To me its important that we recognize that in indoor spaces, theres risk of transmission. Since were getting this data, it shows how important highrisk activities are and we should avoid them. And not only physical distancing but wearing a mask. Meantime, some promising news on the vaccine front. The u. S. Government awarded 1. 6 million to novavax based out of maryland. The vaccine maker will soon get the results phase i and phase ii Clinical Trials and then its hoping to move into phase iii of Clinical Trials. That will involve up to 30,000 people.
