Reporter the Sierra CountySheriffs Office telling us tonight that the man in custody for the killing is 40yearold John Thomas Conway of oroville, a man who had never met dr. Ari gershman or anybody in his family. Its just get wrenching, this whole thing is just unreal. Reporter friday was supposed to be a new adventure for 46yearold dr. Ari gershman and his 15yearold son jack, off roading in a just purchased red Jeep Wrangler rubicon like this one. They chose poker flat near downieville. Had never been there before but were out there for a day of fun. Reporter aris wife, paige, had cancer, so she stayed in danville for treatment. Her world was shaken by a call from her son jack. Dads been shot. I think hes dead, and i have no idea where i am. And im lost in the forest, and theres a shooter, and i am scared. And i dont think im going to make it out of here alive. Reporter marlowe and paige raced to downieville where deputies confirmed the worst. Ari was dead. Jack was still out there, no one knew where or if he was still alive. It was hours of just a horrific nightmare waiting to try to find where is jack. Reporter finally more than 30 hours after seeing his father shot, jack is found safe. He says the killer, a total stranger, pulled up behind their jeep on an atv and just opened fire. No reason. That suspect is in custody tonight, identified as 40yearold John Thomas Conway of oroville. Hes also believed responsible for two other shoot ings on friday. A gofundme page for the family has now raised more than 300,000. Its also raised the familys spirits. Just recorded the highest number of cases in a single day, more than 55,000 in one day. Now, hundreds of them are here in the bay area. Contra costa county reporting 214 new cases since yesterday. San mateo county, 93. Santa clara county, 80. So what can we do . Many county leaders are now looking for new ways to encourage people to wear a mask. On the peninsula, they proposed a 500 fine but instead settled on a billboard campaign. Other counties just issuing new guidelines now. Heres nbc bay areas jean elle. The San Mateo County board of supervisors approved a Public OutreachCampaign Today hoping billboards will help get people on board. We may have to take a next step moving forward in terms of making looking at a potential fine structure, but were going to move forward with the education piece. Reporter here in Contra Costa County, the Health Officer updated mask rules today. Now businesses that are open are supposed to make sure employees and volunteers cover their face, and if a customer refuses to wear a mask, Business Owners are not supposed to serve them or even allow them inside. We havent had very much pushback. Reporter at the fourth boar in orinda, the mandate to refuse service will eliminate any debate. It certainly helps us because we can always push back. If they have an issue with it, they can write the county just like they would if they had a complaint about something else. Reporter Contra Costa County is also requiring people who cant wear a mask due to a medical condition to wear a face shield in public. People we talked to support the changes. At the end of the day, if we dont have masks on and we dont have our people protected, these businesses cant exist. Reporter most hope people comply so reopening plans can move forward. Well, the debate is heating up over sending children back to school. President trump is pushing for kids to return to campuses this fall. The Trump Administration is also pressuring universities to return to inperson learning. Several universities including stanford Just Announced that about half of their students or fewer will even be allowed on campus. Were very much going to put pressure on governors and everybody else to open the schools, to get them open. The American Academy of pediatrics is advocating for children to return to school as long as strong Safety Measures are in place. This is a huge concern for families. Bay area schools are scrambling to make choosing a hybrid model. Tonight san joses alum rock district announced 90 of its students will continue Distance Learning out of the classroom. The remaining 10 will come onto the campus in class and will be prioritized based on homelessness, foster care, and disability. San joses east Side Union HighSchool District will also continue Distance Learning for the majority of students. We just felt that we needed to lower that anxiety of our staff, students, and families so they know what the plan is. It doesnt mean that we wont adjust when we need to adjust for inperson, but at least people know how were going to start the school year. Letourneau was pregnant with his child at the time of her conviction. The two wept on to have another child and eventually got married in 2005 and divorced last year. Letourneau was 58. A painful plea from the parents of a 6yearold boy who was shot and killed in San Francisco over the Holiday Weekend. They gathered today with police and the mayor to urge people to help them catch the gunman. The boy, jace young, was watching fireworks in the bayview when he was shot on fourth of july.
