We literally just walked by a group of people that had masks around their necks, and they werent wearing them. Reporter robert may didnt say anything as he passed the group. I think its really uncomfortable for all of us. Reporter on wednesday morning, rangers responded to an assault here. A 59yearold larkspur man said he put up his hand and told an approaching jogger to put on a mask. The jogger pushed the man to the ground and kept on running. Rangers did not locate the young man. Walkers are stunned by the violent reaction and divided about how to handle people violating mask rules. I think its the wrong choice. You know, its their choice, and im not here to police people, and sometimes when people come really close, i ask them please give me my six feet, right . And that, you know, works. Here in marin county, the board of supervisors passed an ordinance establishing fines for people who violate the health order. The fine for not wearing a mask when its required starts at 25 for individuals. Enforcement is expected to begin as early as next week. Jean elle, nbc bay area news. Late tonight, california updated its total number of coronavirus cases since the pandemic began. Its a big number, now more than half a million. The death toll now stands at nearly 9,200 statewide. The vast majority of those deaths have come from older people but today the state registered the first death of a child. Covid19 has taken the life of a
Central Valley
teenager. The
California Department
of
Public Health
said the teen had
Underlying Health
conditions. The death is hitting the
Central Valley
community hard. Im speechless when it comes to anything that i could say to the family. Its a heartbreaking case, and it just brings home the reality that this is not sparing even the youngest members of our community. Valley
Childrens Hospital
in madera confirmed the patient was theirs and released a statement reading in part, we understand how all our best efforts cannot ease the grief of our families, something we wish so deeply we could lift. The death of this patient reaffirms that children in no age group are not immune from the devastating impact of the covid19 pandemic. Here in the bay area, counties collectively added more than 700 cases. The county with the highest number of cases, as you can see, is well, they havent posted yet, is

with a total of 11,131. Santa clara county added 182 cases today alone. In less than an hour, many businesses in
San Mateo County
will have to shut down again. Gyms, hair and nail salons and indoor malls will be forced to closed or find a way to move outside. A recent rise in coronavirus cases put the county on the governors watch list, triggering these additional business restrictions. We spoke to one salon owner who says the closures are not only threatening his business but the whiplash from reopening and closing again is frustrating and exhausting. Ive got to quit. Congress has not come to an agreement about extending them as part of the next relief bill. The lack of a deal means more than 25 million americans are losing 600 a week in unemployment. For many, that money was the only thing keeping them afloat. Its going to be like probably cutting back on groceries. Its going to be cutting back on anything extra i was planning or trying to do. Its just going to be just tightening it down to core basics. Several
Republican Leaders
have said that they think the 600 a week actually discouraged people from going back to work. The latest stimulus proposal would drop that 600 to 200 a week. But starting today, a much smaller stretch will be closed. The town found that shutting down most of harts avenue to traffic on weekends was actually hurting small businesses. Im definitely hoping to get more business and have more people walking down in this secretary of harts avenue and climb out of this thing altogether. Still others believe foot traffic will not come back until the pandemic is over. If youre one of apples 25,000 bay area employees we hope youre comfortable working from home. The tech giant announced today it is letting people work remotely until 2021. This comes as the pandemic worsens in california and nationwide.
