The ash picked up in the radar and being brought over to the south bay and waking up this morning to a koecoating of cash the cars and in San Francisco. We can see the smoke in the air before the sun rises this morning. Very unhealthy air quality. Make sure you wear a mask all day and starting to feel a little sick you may need it inside the building even at home as we are going to see unhealthy air quality throughout today, numbers that have been really very high as the smoke continues to drift through so that matter in the air combined with the heat will make a lot of people not feel very well looking at the temperatures throughout today. It is going to be another hot one and the excessive heat warning continues inland. Already at noon the low 90s and the south bay and mid90s east bay going into the middle of the day well see the temperatures reaching into the triple digits for spots like antioch and concord and still looking at the very warm weather and not much of a cool down as we go into tonight and expect more smoke today as well as tomorrow and our temperatures that will go from 100 degrees to the low 90s. We do have some more heat in the forecast into next week and San Francisco will drop back to the low 70s which will be a relief, at least a very light ocean breeze picking up. Heading to you, mike, watching the commute, hows it looking right now . The commute itself is fine, kari. The note is because of the fires we have of access cut off. Look at green sensors with the speeds all around the bay but notice the bottom left side, highway 1, not as extensive as it looks on the map but it is an issue because there is limited access there. Highway 9 as well because between highway 9 where it says Boulder Creek and highway 1 is fire in the area. Czu fire. The complex that kris sanchez was reporting. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson live in vacaville this morning where homes are destroyed and hundreds vautded and people injured trying to leave the home. Reporter exactly. If youre just waking up with us im sure you can smell the smoke where you are. We are at cherry glen and Pleasant Valley intersection here in vacaville. The fire seems to have shifted so we dont have the same Vantage Point adds we did earlier but in the last hour it was glowinger and you could see the orange and coming in from the city on 80 east you could see that glow from the freeway and also smell that smoke. This morning many folks in the city, i know i did, could smell the smoke in their own home miles away from where this is burning and folks working to evacuate. We had a photographer here in town for hours just getting those stories of folks wanting to evacuate, loading up their cars. The photographer himself actually was preparing to evacuate but take a listen to what one woman, her experience preparing to leave town and how it got a little dangerous. So my husband was driving the car and it burnt he got burnt and had to leave the car and it blew up so i was walking down by myself and me and i lost my sho. But i reporter and this morning there were reports of several ambulances called because of people being injured and burned because of this fire. Right now these are some of the folks to sit next to, they evacuated their home and theyre in the parking lot and behind that fire still burning but not as bright as it was the last hour because its burned through some of that hill. Those flames still very active here in vacaville. Im Cierra Johnson for today in the bay. Causing destruction in the path. Thank you. We have one of our photographers who lives in that area Robbie Beasom joining us by phone. Are you there . Yes. Good morning. Good morning. You were told to be on stand by. Do you have an update . Not as of now. They just said they recommend everyone be ready to leave at a moments notice. And it advice. I think theres a handful of people here. From where you live can you see the flames in the distance . I cant see flames themselves but i see like the orange glow. Chp told us that its probably three or four blocks from our neighborhood. But its moving at a southwest direction. And so, as you are evacuating, a lot of people some people have places to go, family members and things like that but have they told you anyplace to go for safety or do you have a designated that you and your family are going . They havent told us a place to go and very brief driving down the street. We have planned, have a planned spot down the street thats an open parking lot and if thats packed well go to another parking lot further down i80. We hear about the evacuations and what does a family go through in the moment having to collect everything in your home that you want to save if that fire potentially comes to your home . Yeah. It is really surreal walking through your house looking at what you prepare to take with you. You might not see again. Im just lucky that i had the time to do it. I know people tonight didnt have that time. I know like you were saying a lot of people didnt have that time and you were working overnight and you saw a lot of these flames, some of the homes destroyed by the fire. Talk to us about what you saw last night. Yeah. Last night it was pretty crazy out there on Pleasant Valley road. There was flames. The road, the car. A couple homes went up in flames. It just seemed like the fire moved extremely fast from like 12 00 to where it is now covered a lot of ground. We know look. Robbie beasom, we are having our thoughts and prayers with you and your family and the neighbors out there in that area. Appreciate it. Have a great morning. You, too. Boy, it is really tough. The weathers so hot and now these fires and they can even create their own weather systems, as well. Yeah. We were just talking about how we havent had much wind but the vegetation is very dry and they can actually form clouds that go up high in the atmosphere. You get tornadoes that develop out of these systems and also the winds that they generate drawing in the energy and so this was a part of that complex that was over parts of napa county, spread over mt. Vaca and we have cameras there. So we are watching for the possible conditions as it moves into vacaville that the fire is spreading rapidly. You can see the flames, smell the smoke. Be prepared to leave. Make sure you grab that emergency kit, the important papers, changes of clothes and food and medications for you and your pets. Well talk about the air quality but mike getting you around some of the routes trying to evacuate. The north bay. We have the Morgan Territory and the fremont hills. Stay with me looking at the slowing for san jose and 84. Typical spots taking the map full to screen. The lower left where its closed. I got word of a closure officially highway 1 to santa cruz. During that time, i got two different evacuation alerts for more people here that are living in this fire zone areaer and some of those areas are pretty rocky terrain and getting no notification. Nearly 400 firefighters battling the blaze ripping through the ridges between santa cruz and san mateo counties and fire is called the czu august lightning complex fire to keep track. 4 15 this morning new evacuations were ordered for south skyline boulevard, Russian Ridge open space, middleton tract area, Portola Redwoods State Park and the Evacuation Center open at Pescadero High School and the folks forced out overnight some didnt know the fire is so close in communities with limited cell service and big trees. You cant see the smoke that much because you can see up but you cant see across. Reporter so much of the Boulder Creek Fire Protection center under Evacuation Orders, seem to be expanding into the bonnie dune area and much of northern Santa Cruz County. That terrain is very difficult. The heat is very high but fortunately at this point we havent seen much wind and that is definitely a break out here. Cal fire is going to update the fire fight and the Evacuation Order conditions right here at the Incident Command Center at 6 00. In scotts valley, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Bay area wildfires have people wondering how do you evacuate safely in a pandemic . Experts say make sure you try to social distance as much as you can, ware tears the masks even indoors. The red cross is also trying to help out. If sheltering is needed we are finding hotels and putting folks in hotels. We are providing food differently than we normally would. We are not doing buffet style but contained food. Good time right now to check the threeday go bag to make sure that you have the Hand Sanitizer and masks and if you go to the shelter wash your hands regularly and avoid high touch areas. Also disinfect the areas that you are in frequently. All right. Meteorologist kari hall with a look at what to expect. Yeah. We have some really hot weather in the forecast today again. This is racing rapidly off towards the east and monitoring this as we see more homes in the area that may be in the line of firefighter wildfires. As we are going to have hot temperatures today and drifts of smoke. Expect the temperatures to already be in the low 90s at noon and tracking the hot weather, the air quality and those fires coming up in a few minutes. Talking about that air quality, truly affecting people in the bay area. You can see pretty much every part of the bay area experiencing an affect from the fires. You can probably smell it stepping outside. The wildfires of course making the air quality poor in the bay area. Today in the bays bob rydell live for us in alan rock neighborhood and im not too far from that area and this morning i could smell that smoke inside my house. Reporter yeah. You can see whats going on above the ridge from us. You can see the flashing lights those are firefighters that are putting out a fire that we are able to see 30, 45 minutes ago but that fire as you know gone over the ridge or they have it suppressed part of the lightning complex fire of several fires extending all the way north to brentwood, sunol and alan rock park. Heres a photo from earlier of that fire burning and you can smell the smoke a little bit down here on the valley floor, especially heavy this morning on the sunol grade and Fremont North of here which is why today is a spare the air day. Napa county wildfire spread into vacaville. Those evacuations on Pleasant Valley road we saw those flames earlier this morning, intense. Some homes destroyed by the fire and those evacuating have suffered some burns, one woman described seeing a car blow up as a scary, busy morning for us out there. Now a look at what to expect from that forecast today because, kari, it is not playing well with firefighters as theyre already dealing with the intense heat of the fire and the intense temperatures. We have had such high temperatures. We know that the fuel is very dry and with the new fire burning over the Santa Cruz Mountains overnight the flames and the heat was so intense picked up on the radar and that may even be ash thats being streamed into parts of the south bay from san jose over close to fremont so we are going to continue to have unhealthy air quality today as those fires continue to spread, very little con and thement this morning and you may need to wear your mask inside the home. Whatever mask you have been wearing may do better than not wearing a mask at all as we see the air quality very unhealthy from San Francisco over toward the east bay, seeing the highest numbers in san mateo which, of course, is closest to that lightning complex fire and then for the south bay, south county, numbers that are very high with that unhealthy matter in the air due to whats burned in the wildfires. Looking at the high temperatures for today, it is still hot reaching into the upper 90s for san jose.
