Excuse me, just shot, not killed. Shot in louisville, kentucky tonight as part of the protests in reaction to the grand jurys decision in the Breonna Taylor case. Were going to bring you more details on all of this throughout the news cast tonight. A lot of tension right now. And people here in the bay area are also expressing their outrage over the grand jurys decision. The city of oakland is gearing up for possible demonstrations. Jodi hernandez is live in oakland with more on that. Jodi . Reporter janelle, people here in oakland are hurt and angry over the grand jurys decision, and tonight, theyre expressing themselves. Im enraged but not surprised. Reporter thats how many are reacting to the news that the officers involved in Breonna Taylors death will not be criminally charged for her killing. A grand jury indicted one former officer for wanton endangerment, for putting the lives of taylors neighbors at risk. But is not charging any of the three officers for taylors death. Every time a black body is gunned down, whether that happens in oakland or sacramento or louisville or kansas or minneapolis, we feel that. We feel that because of the people we know that every single time we walk out the door, that could be us. Reporter people in oakland have been pushing for justice for taylor. Her image is up all over town. Tonight, local family members of others killed at the hands of police are holding a Virtual Press conference. As others in the Community Express their pain and outrage. I thought, wow, yet again. Like, we can scream, we can holler for 50, 60, 70 years, you know, our palms can bleed and yet were not seen. Were not heard, were not valued. And its unfortunate because were human. This is righteous outrage. This is a continued tr e e ed t systemic racism. Reporter the mayor hopes any possible demonstrations dont get out of hand. Please express yourself. You will be supported in that expression here in oakland. Vandalism is not expression. Reporter and we are live where you can see Oakland City Hall remains boarded up as it has for months. The city has seen countless protests over the last several months. Community members tell us that they do plan to have some sort of a demonstration perhaps as early as tomorrow. The city says it will be ready and, again, they say they will celebrate and support then administrati demonstrations but vandalism will not be tolerated. Jodi hernandez, nbc bay area news. Jodi, thank you. Were going to go to the south bay where there is a demonstration taking place right now. It started about an hour ago. A few dozen people gathered at San Jose City hall, with signs that say black lives matter, demanding justice for Breonna Taylor. Of course, were going to follow her case throughout the news cast and the latest developments coming out of louisville where we hear a Police Officer has been shot. Well have an update in about 25 minutes. An internet outage in the south bay caused problems for people working and studying from home. Many were forced to leave their home to go to class online because of the outage, which lasted for hours. Our business and tech reporter scott budman caught up with people of all ages trying to stay productive. Reporter the new hot spot in town, a coffee shop. I need wifi. Reporter this one was crowded thanks to a cable internet outage that sit the south bay hard. I woke up this morning and the internet wasnt working. I cant search anything on google. Reporter techies and students, dependent on home wifi, unable to dial in when comcast, Parent Company of this tv station, had an outage. Comcast says its network was inadvertently damaged during main tans. Im in sales and part of the sales team, so bringing in deals is important and you cant do that without access to your computers. Reporter the Santa Clara Unified School District posted this on its website, saying the internet was out because of a damaged fiber line. Local colleges were affected, too. Its been a mess. Ive been trying to email my professors. No one has been receiving emails. Reporter so work and school were slower, or even canceled today. But there was a little more human interaction. Its nice, because theres more people and more livelihood and a lot more things going on. Reporter by about 1 30 in the afternoon, Internet Access had been restored in the south bay. Most of the coffee smops cleared o out. Thank you, scott. The top health officer, dr. Sarah cody, has a message for the bay area, dont reopen too fast. It comes after three more bay area counties moved into the red tier. Now only sonoma and contra costa remain in the purple tier. As for the red tier, state getlines will allow you to resume indoor activities and going to the theaters, the gym, but with reduced capacity. Santa clara county has resumed some activities, but still is saying no to dining indoors. We just need to be patient. We just need to be patient. Weve got to get sort of the level of virus in the community, particularly in places like here on the east side and in south county, as low as we can before we start beginning again those activities that are riskier. Alameda county also seems to be taking a beat, even though it moved up a tier this week, its Still Holding off dining indoors for a couple more weeks. The fires that burned across california this year killed 26 people. But tonight, new information reveals the fires may have been more deadly than we thought. Reporter its no surprise that dirty air makes us sick, but Stanford University wanted to know how bad it can be for the human body, and the results oh of the new study they did may surprise you. A thousand died who would not have died had they not been exposed to this air quality. Reporter he estimates those thousand people died in california from mid august to mid september this year because they were breathing in the smoke from all the wildfires across the state. Deaths, he said, that would not have happened otherwise. According to burke, those most affected are people over the age of 65, with preexisting health conditions. This could be cardiovascular conditions, respiratory conditions like asthma. Reporter health e experts have noticed that patients sick with covid show more severe symptoms when exposed to bad air. During a press Conference Today about covid, Public Health officer dr. Sara cody said all the smoke in our air the past few weeks might have actually played a role in reducing the spread of the virus. Ironically, i think that was the heat and the very poor air quality. More people were likely staying indoors and away from others. So weve been seeing these declines in our case rates. Reporter the smoke was so heavy and widespread, it could be seen from space in satellite images like this. Professor burke says this kills many more people than the flames and will only get worse over time. 2020 was no accident. Wildfires are getting worse because of a warming climate. As the climate continues to warm, we should unfortunately expect more years like this in the future if we dont get our act together. The governor came out swinging today, setting a lofty goal for california to combat climate change. He wants to ban the sale of gas powered cars and trucks by 2035. A city in the east bay wants to stop you from making unhealthy choices at the supermarket. Berkeley is making history by becoming the first city in the country to ban junk food from the checkout line. That mean nos kans no candy and. Youre cutting into the checkout lane, and thats when you get tempted. Cookies, candy, cans of soda. Reporter last night to the Berkeley City Council approved the countrys first healthy checkout policy. Starting next year, large stores in berkeley will have to swap out candy and soda for healthier options like sugar free gum, nuts, or milk. The policy only applies to 25 stores in the city, including safeway, cvs, and walgreens. The vice mayor says people will still be able to satisfy their junk food fix, theyll just have to walk more steps inside the store to do it. Right now, people have to now theyll have to search through the store to find the unhealthy choices. Definitely means ill get less harassment at the checkout from these two. Reporter she says the policy is necessary because the pandemic has proved that people with underlying conditions like diabetes, are more susceptible to covid19. A. J. Curtis says there are bigger issues, like the homeless crisis, that deserve more attention and action from the city. I feel like they should be focusing more on that than the food we eat. A follow up now to a story from monday. Sky ranger was over the scene of a large homeless encampment being cleaned up on monterey road. This is what it looks like today. Most of the trash has been picked up. City leaders approved a plan to clean up multiple illegal dump sites in san jose. A bay area father and john have quite a story to tell. This turned into a wild life encounter. More than a dozen raccoons all at once and spotted a coyote in the bushes. People seem to be ignoring the warning signs in the park, which is encouraging the wild life. Reporter it was a hike mark and his 10 yoerld son had taken many times before. But this past friday was much different. We just went for a walk and turned the corner, and it was like something out of a movie. It was very surreal. Reporter there were raccoons everywhere by golden gate parks north lake trail head. 14 by their count. Seconds later, as they pulled at the leash of their young rottweiller, zeus, a coyote just feet away in the pushes. They say the coyote seemed to be avoiding the aggressive pack of raccoons. We almost felt like we were in their territory. Reporter a biology professor from San Francisco city College Tells nbc bay area its not unusual for raccoons to become aggressive and even beg for food. The animals sometimes travel in families or groups, and professor swizer says they can transmit rabies and other diseases if you get too close. This family says theyll be watching for them and keep their distance. Raccoons are no joke. They will cut you. Reporter but some people are ignoring the warnings, even with signs feet away telling them not to feed the raccoons. Professor swizer says he hopes the public will take these warnings more seriously for their own good and the health of the wildlife that lives here. Tom jensen, nbc bay area news. Keep your distance.
