KNTV Today In The Bay July 12, 2024

There . Its starting out very smoky and were still going to have unhealthy air quality today, especially in the north bay where weve had the thick smoke burning from the glass fire. Now, were also going to see that moving into parts of the east bay and all of us need to limit our time outside. Its also going to be a hot afternoon. So, we have more concerns there as our temperatures reach up to 102 degrees in antioch. Well have some mid 70s in half moon bay. Well talk about the range in temperatures and whats ahead for the weekend coming up in a few minutes. Mike, whats happening right now for the commute . Well, quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza shows you the middle lanes continue to build, but no metering lights registered yet at the toll plaza. The map also shows you slowing on the incline, but not on the approach. Great stuff. We continue to keep our eyes on the fire zones in the north bay and slowing shows up in Castro Valley for 238 as well as holding in san jose for 101. Back to you. We continue to follow that breaking news you were just talking about. Fire crews working diligently and quickly throughout the night and try to cut Containment Zones when it comes to those fires. Another round of red flag warnings as we have been talking about this morning. They all go into effect this afternoon. The fire itself has burned 52,000 acres. Its only 2 contained. Flames have destroyed 143 homes. In the meantime, fire investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started. Sources close to the investigation tell nbc bay area Investigative Unit theyre focusing on electrical fencing near the dancing bear ranch on howl mountain. In a statement, the owner of the vineyard there. They say theyre aware of cal Fire Investigation and theyre fully cooperating. A live report from that fire zone coming up at 6 30. Well, now to decision 2020 with just 33 days until the election. The president ial Debate Commission promising to change after tuesdays faceoff in cleveland. And americans are weighing in on what they saw. Today in the bay tracie potts is live with us this morning with that part of the story. Tracie . Marcus, good morning. Goodern moing, everyone. A lot of people scratching their heads at what happened at the debate on the stage on tuesday and now the Debate Commission wants to look at making some changes and joe biden is good with that and the trump team is not. President trump overnight in minnesota marking his own debate scorecard. Last night i did what the corrupt media has refused to do. I held joe biden accountable for his 47 years of lies. 47 years of betrayal. And 47 years of failure. Reporter but undecided americans say otherwise. Im happy that my children were not awake to see that and the behavior. Reporter even some Top Republicans not happy with the president s performance. Well, i mean, just say with the debate. Reporter with fewership down 11 million from four years ago, the president ial Debate Commission issic looing ilooki the format to prevent mr. Trumps constant interruptions. Maybe we should give the moderator a mute button. The commission has to get a lot tougher when debate participants dont follow the rules. Just a national embarrassment. Reporter democratic nominee joe biden says hes not sure what to expect at the next debate in two weeks. I hope were able to get a chance to actually answer the questions that are asked by the persons in the room. But god only knows what hell do. Reporter the president also distancing himself from the White Supremacist Group he emboldened tuesday. I dont know who the proud boys are. I always denounce any form, any form. Reporter the group now using the president s words as a rallying cry. And the spokesperson for President Trump says that they dont like the idea of changing the format now after the first debate saying its like moving the goal post in the middle of the game. Marcus . But a lot of people want to see something change. They were not happy with that debate. All right, thanks, tracie. Well, theres some changes coming that people will not want to see. Live to sfo, a major blow to Airline Workers as two of the nations Largest Airlines announce plans to furlough workers amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. That impact will be felt right here in the bay area. Lets check in with today in the bay kris sanchez live at sfo with what we know so far. Good morning, kris. Well, good morning to you, laura. I was just on a plane yesterday and its obvious even to a regular joe like me that Airline Travel is still down and the airlines say that with fewer people flying, they cannot keep workers on the job without some federal assistance and that federal assistance has expired. So, heres what we know about those possible furloughs of employees. The planned furloughs of today. More than half of which are flight attendants. 19,000 american Airline Workers will get furlough, as well. Still a pending request for 25 billion in psp aid and that federal Assistance Program and the negotiations in washington continue and the last round of federal aid expired yesterday. Now, Airline Travel is down 70 and despite cost cutting, the airlines say they cannot keep people on the payroll without that federal help. In letters to employees, the United Airlines ceo called it a sad day that comes after months of cost cutting. The American Airlines ceo echoed the same sentiment that adding that they contact their elected official. Enormous bipartisan support for an extension of the Payroll Support Program which will keep those people employed and the only problem we have is we dont have a vehicle for getting it done. We dont have a backup plan, ill be in the unemployment line like so many other people. The airlines say they will recall those workers back to the job, if they get that federal assistance and there are negotiations that continue today. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin will negotiate today as they did yesterday. If something comes of that, well let you know as soon as possible because with a huge united hub here in the bay area, we know a lot of families are going to feel the hit if it doesnt come through. At sfo, kris sanchez, today in the bay. Thank you. San francisco restaurants are back open for Indoor Dining for the First Time Since march. China live on broadway has set its tables and welcoming diners last night. One of the challenges for them is that they have so much space right now. So, so many of them for nearly 200 days they still had to pay rent and energy costs. Now, all restaurants in the city they have 25 capacity indoors up to 100 people. So that only means for 16,000 square feet, 450 diners, but its a start. This is my favorite place. So when i hear we can open up and theyre opening up indoors, this is the first place i thought to come and visit. The restaurants must have Health Screening for diners and you will have to wear those masks at all times unless, of course, youre eating or drinking. Well, speaking of reopening. Las vegas is on its way to resume conventions and concerts. Nevadas governor is now allowing gatherings of 250 people or 50 of a venues capacity. Event venues like the raiders new home they can now start applying to reopen. They have to show that safety protocols will be in place. Well, a lot of folks just staying close to home, though, these days. And you probably need to stay indoors a little bit more as that smoke continues to hover over the bay area. Red flag warning, kari. Yeah, weve been talking about that. The spare the air alert and the heat advisory. So, we are going to have some hot weather later today and right now its nice and cool with our temperatures in the upper 60s. And watching these temperatures move in the north bay around the area of the glass fire because the cooler it is, the better. And weve also had some higher humidity in these areas where right now were at 63 degrees in st. Helena. That heat advisory including much of the bay area except for the immediate coastline are heading into the triple digits today. And even some 70s and 80s near the bay as our highs reach as high as 102 degrees today in antioch. Ill be watching this. Well talk about the weekend forecast. Mike, whats happening out there right now for the commute . Well, aside from people getting warmer apparently, were looking over at the bay bridge toll plaza where the backup is getting a little more volume. Still the middle lanes on the approach and coming off 880 the overcrossing there. No metering lights on and the flow down the east shore freeway and approaching the bay bridge still lighter than you might expect and good news for the Speed Sensors and slowing on the approach towards San Francisco, as well. Around fremont street. And little build and a crash reported 580 and got my eyes on that and no surprises for the trivalley south bay or for the peninsula. Back to you. Lets hope it stays that way. 6 10 right now. Hollywood is sounding the alarm. Coming up next, the movie industry says its in big trouble unless it gets help fast. Who theyre asking for help, next. Plus the most important thing happening in washington right now is that talk over a stimulus plan. We could get a vote today. Wall street seems rather positive about that, in fact, as we go out to the futures and the dow industrials expected to trade high. Well, scott, are you ready. Oh, yeah, saturday night live returns this weekend. What host chris rock is saying about tuesdays president ial debate and who he watched it with. 6 10 for you this morning. Youre watching today in the bay. Right now at 6 13. Lets get a look at our air quality today. Unhealthy for the north bay and inland east bay. More of the same tomorrow. But then we go from unhealthy to moderate by the weekend. Well talk about the changes in our wind direction, as well as our temperatures. Thats coming up in a few minutes. Well take you out there, folks, awhere we have one crash over and the bay bridge toll plaza that looks smooth. We still have just the middle lanes with the backup and no metering lights. Well take you out to the map and show you where that crash is and it will slow you down a little bit because nails and debris in the area. This is camino de ablo. Well, good morning. Very happy thursday to you, as well. We just got the latest data on jobless claims. 837,000 fellow americans going to the Unemployment Office for the first time last week. It is fewer than expected. We get the big jobs number tomorrow along with the unemployment rate, as well. Were also keeping our eye on washington. Theres still no deal on the stimulus bill. Democrats had passed one last spring but the senate and the white house turned it down. Now, nancy pelosi is working with treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin to try to craft a new bill. So far, republicans dont like what they see. The current bill returns the extra 600 a week federal unemployment payment, cuts another stimulus check for families and increases funds to the post office and adds new Financial Support for airlines. But it sounds like that is going to come too late. Our own kris sanchez has been reporting and well lay off tens of thousands of workers today. Had that bill come yesterday. It might have been a different story. Perhaps well see if airlines will wait until the very last second before pulling the trigger today. Some good news on the financial front. The president this morning signed the bill that came from congress that will keep the government open through the election and california just set a real estate record. The median house price for the whole state is now above 700,000. That would be a good price in the bay area. But were talking about the whole state. Meanwhile, Mortgage Rates continue to fall. A 30year fixed conforming mortgage is now the lowest its ever been more than 3 . Adjustables are in the twos. That brought lots of buyers to the market. There still arent enough homes to satisfy demand. The increase just, weve never seen anything quite like it. There could be six to ten people in certain pockets, especially in the bay area, all competing for the same property. You know, laura and marcus, we talk about people moving out of the bay area because of the weather, the economy, covid or work from home, but the number of people who still want to be in homes is so high that it almost doesnt matter how many people move out. There will still not be enough homes for sale. Yeah, absolutely. Scott, thank you. Very competitive. All right. Thanks. Well, new this morning, hollywood is asking congress for help. That includes theater owners, directors, producers and writers. They sent a letter to capitol hill asking for financial help or they fear movie small to midsize theaters will not survive the pandemic. And the impact will be felt throughout the entire industry. According to the letter, 93 of theaters have lost more than 75 of their revenue. Trending for you this morning lakers star lebron james is helping get out the vote with just 33 days until the election. His new Voting Initiative has recruited 10,000 poll workers, according to a twitter post. And to thank them, former president barack obama made a surprise appearance in a virtual crowd during last nights game. This is nba finals between Los Angeles Lakers and miami heat. Now, a number of firsttime poll workers were also among the virtual fans. The lakers ran away with the game 116 to the heats 98. Okay. Whos ready for this . Saturday night live back this weekend with a brandnew season with a live studio audience. Check out the social distancing table reading. Chris rock is hosting and hes actually on ellen today talking about watching the first president ial debate with jim carrey who will be playing joe biden on snl. And to watch him watch joe biden and then do joe biden and then maybe do a little trump and then do a little clint eastwood. You all probably had more fun than any of us watching that debate. That seems like you all had fun. We were all terrified. You can bet the first debate will be showcased on snl saturday night. Chris rock says it should be interesting. By the way, you can catch that full ellen interview right here on nbc bay area. I have to admit while i was watching the debate, i was thinking, saturday night live is going to have a field day with this one. A lot of people were thinking that. You can just imagine how it will play out out on saturday night live. Im sure well have stomach aches from all the laughter this weekend. We welcome them back. Absolutely. 6 19. The forecast for us. Meteorologist kari hall tracking that for us and, kari, conditions are not the best out there. Not horrible. Yeah, were going to see some improvement as we go down the line. We just had to talk about what is going on today because we have not only the red flag warping, but a heat advisory for the bay area. We also have a spare the air alert because of the smoke drifting in. And were also being asked to conserve energy for those hot temperatures today to avoid those brown outs. So, as we look at whats going on today, red flag warning has been expanded from the north bay hills over towards the east bay hills and it also now includes the santa cruz mountains. Were going to see those winds picking up today and at times those wind gusts coming up to about 30 Miles Per Hour. As we go through this forecast, a northerly wind brings in that smoke and were going to see some higher wind gusts, especially starting this afternoon. The red flag warning goes into effect at 1 00, but i think some of the highest winds will actually be tomorrow afternoon. Look at what the forecast shows. Northwesterly wind at 25 to possibly 35 Miles Per Hour and may be higher in some of the upper elevations. That may spread those flames very quickly, especially around the area of the glass fire. So, were watching that. Today is just going to be really hot. We can see the reason why we have a heat advisory. Were looking at temperatures over 100 degrees. Up to 95 in the south bay and 102 in antioch. Ukiah reaching 101. Very dry weather pattern but the reason why the winds are picking up is because we had this large storm system up moving through canada. So, as it moves closer, those winds will really start to rush in. And, so, the good news is that today, october 1st, begins our rain season. And, so, we look forward to that because we are in a severe drought. And theres something a little bit more hopeful in the future well be watching going into the end of next week. Once this High Pressure moves out, we are going to see some cooler temperatures moving in for the weekend. And the models are even hinting at possibly by the end of next week, there may be some rain. So, i cannot wait for that. In the meantime, we do still have to deal with the hot weather and the weekend we are going to see some improved air quality just slightly, but, of course, those fires will still be burning and that is barring no new fires get going during the red flag warning for today. A lot to watch for and, of course, well keep you updated. Mike, what is the update on the morning commute . Well, kari, i like the word hopeful. We are always hopeful for those conditions. Youre talking about at the bay bridge and maybe inevitable for the metering lights because they were turned on even though traffic is lighter on the approach and the traffic fills in the middle lanes and filling in all the lanes except for hov and three or more, remember that. As we look at the map, we show the arrow shows you the top of the bay bridge toll plaza. If you dont, if youre not told to go there, of course, youre told to stay away. Contra costa county moves very smoothly and the bay, south bay and peninsula no big delays there. In fact, hardly any delay at all and also look at Castro Valley over on the left
