And im not sure its great when the title of your endorsement doubles as an admission of failure. [ laughter ] these days it seems like each news headline is worse than the last but every once in a while, theres a story that doesnt make you want to crawl under your covers. And we like to tell you about one of them in a segment called the kind of story we need right now. Seth youre probably thinking, ive heard enough dramatic news stories this year to last me a lifetime. I dont need another one. But you might want to take a minute to hear this. At a kansas home depot, Police Responded to reports of a bomb threat at the store in wichita a customer alerted employees, a man inside the bathroom said there was a bomb in the Building Police were able to locate the man responsible for those comments and that Man Told Police he warned other guests to leave the restroom because he was, quote, fixing to blow it up, but had no intention of causing a panic. The man also told Police Others in the room laughed, understanding his joke, which im just now getting seth this is the kind of story we need right now. The news is filled with stories about someone calling 911 unnecessarily to abuse their white privilege. Finally a story about someone calling 911 unnecessarily because they misunderstood someone who was taking a dump. Not only were the police called, because a bomb threat is a very serious matter, they had to go to home depot, conduct an investigation and interview witnesses. Imagine being the Police Officer who had to take those statements with a straight face uhhuh. Uhhuh and did the suspect say how big a bomb he planned to drop . One eyewitness told police that he laughed when he heard the suspects comments because he understood that the man, quote, was in a serious need to defecate, and that he was attempting to provide a polite warning to the other patrons of the bathroom. Thats an actual quote from an Actual Police report uhhuh. Yeah, yeah you know what i might just change that word to defecate for the report. But by the time police were done with their investigation, the man had left the store, so they had to go track him down imagine taking a dump so big it ends with you getting pulled over officer, i dont even have kids how could i drop them off at the pool . This is the kind of story we need right now every news story these days takes an insane left turn, but its always a turn for the worse. Even the stories that start out nice end badly aww, bear cub wandered into a family Swimming Pool and then ate their grandma and then endorsed trump . What a delight to hear a story that starts out terrible, and then gets great. Frankly, its also a delight to hear a story about good manners in a mens room. Usually the most polite thing that happens in a mens room is someone capitalizes the name of the person theyre writing graffiti about this new level of consideration is good news, in my book and speaking of news, can we just take a moment to imagine what it must feel like to be this anchor . One minute youre fresh out of journalism school, then years later, youre on television saying this. He was, quote, fixing to blow it up. Seth but at least she could rely on her coanchor to handle this story like a pro. To ethan now, please. Our first guest tonight is an Academy Awardwinning actress you know from films like black swan, jackie and the star wars prequels her new Childrens Book, there it is right here, Natalie Portmans fables, is available now. Please welcome back to the show natalie portman. Hi, natalie, how are you hi, im good. Im so glad to talk to you seth its wonderful to talk to you now, as well. And i should notice our nows are very different, because you are in australia it is very early for you, yes . Yeah, its like 7 30, so its not super early. Normal parent early. Seth yes i guess thats the thing, that once you become a parent, you realize you have a different sliding scale for what being early is and i should use that as transition to talk about your book, which is great that you decided to write one what have you changed about these sort of three existing fables well, i realized when i was reading to my kids, i have a 9yearold son and a 3 1 2yearold daughter. And when i started reading to my daughter, i realized so many of the classic books have almost all male protagonists. And so, i started changing the pronouns and then i was like, this just needs to be different. So i was like, we dont need to throw away the old stories i just want to have them with a character population that reflects the world more. So, i set out to rewrite three of three of my favorites. Seth so ive got i have a two boys. Theyre 4 1 2, 2 1 2 and, im wondering, did your kids then have different favorite books because their genders were different or did they like the same thing . They really liked both they really both liked the same things, which was a really nice thing to see but, then i realized that a lot of the kind of feministskewing books were geared towards girls, and none of them became her favorites. But, my son wasnt even exposed to them in terms of, like, people giving presents or the kinds of things, you know, they aim at him so i was like, oh, we need the classic things, the things that all kids read, to have just a real reflection of the real world. Seth i would imagine the scariest thing about writing a Childrens Book would be your own childrens reaction to it. How have they responded so far yeah, no, theyre my toughest critics, by far. Like, they are constantly cutting me down and telling me, you know [ laughter ] im inadequate in whatever way so they were kind of the best, most honest editors, like throughout i would just read it to them, and you could tell when they were board, or losing attention, or, you know, didnt get something. So, it was great to be able to, like, change it and test it out on them, and see what i could do to make them laugh seth have they are there other sort of bodies of your work that theyve watched . Have they watched any of your movies no, they havent. I think its weird for them to see you in, like, a different context than their mom seth sure. Like, until theyre older and they can kind of conceptually get it better. Do your kids watch you, ever seth no, i mean, theyve seen me on you know where they see me is on taxi tv. Oh. Seth cause every now and then there will be a clip of the show thats major. Youve really made it. Seth yeah, they really i mean, for a kid, if you can show up in any sort of mode of transportation, they kind of lose their minds thats super cool seth yeah, but they then they sort of recognize me, and then they want me to mute it whereas i tell them, look, the only way its even possible for the taxi driver to know whos in the car is if we turn the volume up way high. [ light laughter ] here youre actually i hope im right here, youre in australia working on the new thor movie, is that correct . Yes, yes. We havent started filming yet were just prepping. Seth and this is with taika is the director. Hes such a fantastic director i think now it obviously makes perfect sense, but maybe it was a little unlikely in the beginning to direct a big superhero franchise like this. Is it exciting to work with him . Its so awesome hes just got like the best spirit hes so hes a very good person, and hes also hilarious. And the combination is very, very endearing so, its very exciting to get to go to work and, like, laugh a lot there. Seth i know that theres no movie thats more under wraps than a marvel movie, but there is rumors, at least, that you might be wielding the hammer thats pretty exciting yeah, yeah, no. I mean, weve weve definitely been able to talk about and openly talked about the fact that jane becomes the mighty thor, like in some of the graphic novels so its pretty pretty exciting to get my superhero on. Seth its been long overdue. Something else thats really exciting and ties into i think a lot of what were talking about, is you were announced as one of the owners of a new professional womens soccer team. Heres a picture of you with megan rapinoe. Shes one of our favorites here as well. How did you get involved with being one of the owners of this new team well, with times up, it was kind of the first time that women across industries had gotten together. So women in tech, and business, and sports, and film, and medicine, advertising, all these different kind of backgrounds came together. And when we started hearing from some of the athletes, particularly the one that really inspired me was listening to abby wambach to talk about her experience and, to think these best players in the world, in the worlds most popular sport, werent being given the kind of recognition, amplification, you know, compensation, that they deserved, was really crazy so a group of us got together and said, okay, were going to try and take this differently. And so its the first womenled, womeninvestor, professional sport team and were angel city fc, and well be starting in 2022. Were just going into player recruitment and all of that. Seth did you play soccer in high school . Oh, no. Im like the least athletic person [ laughter ] of all time. Maybe thats why i admire it so much seth right but thats why everyone who knows me is like, how did you end up in this . But im a big im a big fan i really admire it and i could not dribble a ball to save my life. Seth it should be noted that i think when you look at owners of male sports, you never think, oh, i bet theyd be really good at football. Right seth so, i think its very natural to maybe not be someone who has to go out on the field as well. Exactly its like kind of part of being a fan is theyre, like, kind of, you know, standins for what you wish you could do. Seth absolutely. You mentioned times up. I know youve been really involved not only with that, but very vocal politically you know, its a very strange time to talk, because obviously were, you know, a week out from an election. There are maybe reasons to be optimistic as well as reasons to be deeply pessimistic. How are you what is your emotional state right now . Im i think im on edge, as most people are, about what is going to happen because, it feels like it will really determine the future in a big way for our kids but i am what makes me optimistic, is how engaged people have become like, i think people care more than they ever have in my lifetime, for sure about politics, and whats happening, and being personally involved, and personally invested and realizing that their votes make a difference and so, thats been kind of the silver lining, i think, to all of this, is that everyone is really kind of feeling like theyre part of this, and they need to be active. Seth i guess 3 is probably too young to be aware. But is youre how aware is your 9yearold of everything thats happening oh, so aware. I mean, the both my kids are aware. I mean, my 3yearold obviously less so, but shell say shell talk about trump and biden, like in conversation. I think she hears it so much and my son is very aware and talks about it with his friends. And he really realized how much its impacted them theyve grown up largely under this presidency. And its really a different i mean, my daughter completely, of course, but my son, half his life has been under this presidency and so its quite quite remarkable, how much these young people are engaged and curious seth it is interesting how theyre its pretty easy, i feel like, to explain the current president to kids, because he is like a fable in a lot of ways. If they read one or two Childrens Books, youre like, heres where he fits in. Yeah. And you try not to, like i try not to i always want my kids to have nuance and never be like, oh, this person is bad seth of course or this person is good, and be like, you know, people are complicated. But its comp its hard to get that across with trump im like i dont want to like demonize, but like, i might just demonize him, you know seth we have the best yeah, its hard to find the nuance seth we had the best thing in the world happen the other day, which is my sisterinlaw, her name is ariel, and shes very close to my wife, and we love her very much but we were talking about donald trump to our 4yearold and one of the things we said is, hes very rude. And he took that and he said, but not as rude as ariel, right . And i was like, oh, this is [ laughter ] literally the greatest and just to be able to say to him, like, no hes not [ laughter ] hes not like that. Thats great. Jill biden introduced you and your late husband, senator john mccain. Yes, she did. It was fun it was in hawaii i was invited with my parents to a reception that was being held for a group of senators on their way through hawaii to china and john happened to be there. And although i didnt see this when it initially happened, but i guess when i came in the room he was staring at me and she said, go meet her go over there and talk to her. So so he did. And the rest is history. Seth was his did he have a good approach game when he first came over . Were you interested immediately . Yeah. No, i was. I mean, you know he walked over to me, i oh, this guys really cute. And we later on that night, we went and had a drink at the Royal Hawaiian hotel, which is you know, it has tiki tiki torches and Everything Else going on and then he called me from china. He wound up calling me from china when he got there. So it was i guess it was love at first sight it was fun seth can you talk a little about the transition you made from one sort of privately supporting joe biden to making the decision to go public with it uhhuh. Well, you know, it was gradual in some respects you know, i like everyone else had watched what was going on with this president and with and the actions that the white house were taking on various issues and, you know, it started like everyone, i spent my day yelling at the tv when i was watching it. And the final blow for me, not only just the lack of empathy and compassion, but the lack of character, the absolute unbelievable issue of not working in a bipartisan fashion at all, but the final blow for me was when he called our troops losers and suckers and i have three members of my family, two sons and a daughterinlaw, that are serving. And i at that point i said, i can sit here and yell at the tv, or i can get up and do something. So thats what i did, and i decided to openly endorse him. I am a republican, though, and i am going to remain a republican. Seth so i wonder what you would say to other republicans whose intention is to, obviously, stay loyal to the party, who are making this decision between maybe not supporting the president , but also being hesitant to vote for joe biden. Maybe a lot of them would say, well, im just not going to vote at all. What would you say to them well, thats what im trying to help avoid, obviously judging by the outcome of all now what, 67 million early ballots have been turned in. I think were not going to have a problem with people not voting but what i do want people to realize, look, this is you know, i dont agree with joe on everything i i believe that joe will work in a bipartisan fashion, though, to reach Common Ground and and work on issues that are important for us and more importantly, i mean, a large part of this is the fact that joe has a covid plan. Unlike the rest the white house and the rest of the members, he believes its real he believes and talks to the scientists involved. And now, you know, its time that we put his plan into action its things like that, that i tell republicans when they ask me you know, its im tired of some of my president not having my back on things and more importantly, not having our countrys back internationally. You know, weve left our allies behind weve left our weve withdrawn from treaties, et cetera i mean, our country is not well respected overseas either in all of this. Theres a lot at stake here. Seth your husband was attacked by the president in his trademark style of cruelty, not only when he was alive, but after he passed. Do you think john would enjoy the fact that hes still taking up so much head space of the president . Our familys talked about that a little bit. I i know one thing for sure john would be very disappointed in whats going on right now this is not this was not, you know what he believed in, nor would he ever have wanted to ever happen. I think the fact that he is taking up head space, though, is kind of hilarious on occasion. Seth you mentioned the lack of the sort of Covid Response plan and i think that maybe runs parallel with senator mccains decision to give the thumbsdown to the obamacare repeal. It wasnt that he was a great fan of obamacare, but he recognized in the moment that there was not a replacement. Did you talk to him a great deal about that moment when he, you know, now quite significantly, broke with his party right we talked about it beforehand. And, you know things like that, i give you a little behindthe scenes thing a lot was going on in the cloakroom behind the Vice President was back there. The governor of arizona, i believe, was on the phone. They were they were lobbying my husband pretty hard but the one thing he knew is that we could not do away with obamacare without a plan on the other side and there was no plan so we had, in his mind, and i believe rightly, as he agreed, it was the right thing to do these kinds of votes and decisions, you know, you dont always youre not always popular when you make the right decision and john knew that, and john abided by it. And and im glad he did what he did, i really am. But they did put a full court press on him seth obviously right now in the last week with the campaign, youve been through this crazy time right now. Last week in the campaign is nuts, so seth what is the energy like oh, its wild no one gets any sleep. Everyones really running on coffee, and probably a little liquor, too. And its just, you know its its nonstop, these last seven days are nonstop because youve got to get to the finish line seth we we crossed paths during the last seven days in 2008 we did. Seth for all your accomplishments, youre also a very accomplished sketch actor [ laughter ] here you are this is a qvc sketch we did in the final days of the campaign, the senator was trying to raise some campaign funds. And you did a very good job in the sketch do you have fond memories of that night i do. You know, there a lot of people say, are campaigns hard and all those things and there are some very hard moments. But but doing snl was a fun moment and as you know, my husband did it several times i was just grateful to be to be a part of that. I had a great time, it was fun seth another thing that bonded your family with the bidens is, and you mentioned it earlier, military service. You know, obviously its been true of both your families is that something that john and joe would speak about often . Often, yes. You know, we our sons both left at about the same time for iraq and so, here, joe was running for Vice President , my husband was running for president , and we both had two sons serving in iraq at the same time. It you know, its not only a bonding experience for the families, but it made both families ours, and of course the biden family, understand what the families of troops go through when they deploy i mean, its hard. And so i so he has a different perspective and a good perspective on what it means to serve your country in the military and the effect it has on families. But more importantly, you know, we have that that commonality, but as you know, we have the commonality of of glioblastoma, which hit both of our families and so it would be hard to separate the biden and mccain family in years to come, because were just too good of friends seth you also have spoken of former Vice President bidens empathy. And i guess that was on display. He did come and visit your husband in the final days, yeah . He did. He came out, my husband was still alert, a little bit wasnt too alert, but he was alert and awake and recognized joe and could talk a little bit. And joe joe had just been through this with beau i mean, hed just been through it and here he is, out in arizona number one, joking like crazy with john. John was laughing as best he could. I mean, it was it was fun to watch and just just the normal things. We prayed together and then he consoled our family. And i dont know that i could have had the strength, having lost a son, to have gone into and helped another family with the same problem that we had so it its an incredible i mean, we do have a lot in common, and joe this is a perfect example of how joe gives.
