Its always great to be with you guys. I hope you and your families are doing well. Listen, weve got a great lineup today, including an inspiring young boy from texas, a visit to the Shedd Aquarium in chicago, where well check in with the new chicks in the house. Penguin chicks that is. Plus a 10yearold who is sweetening things up at home. Shell be here to share a special thanksgiving recipe you can try at with adult permission, of course. But first, lets get to our top story. And thats the president ial election. President elect joe biden will become the 46th president of the United States when he is sworn into office in january. And with this win comes a few historic firsts. Here to explain, our friend peter alexander. Hey, lester. President elect joe biden will officially take over as president of the United States on january 20th, 2021. Thats the day of his inauguration. And its set to take place right here in washington dc. But before mr. Biden takes the oath of office, Vice President elect Kamala Harris, the first woman ever elected as Vice President and the first woman of color, will be sworn in the same day. Between now and then president elect biden will form whats called a Transition Team to help him and Kamala Harris prepare for office. Mr. Bidens wife, jill biden, shes also gonna make some history. She has said that she plans to keep teaching after she becomes first lady on inauguration day. She has said that she wants people to value teachers and to appreciate their contributions. And its important because it means mrs. Biden will be the first first lady to hold a paying job while her husband is in office. The bidens, by the way, also have to pack their bags to move into the white house early next year. And when they come they will bring a pair of pets, two german shepherds. I guess you could call them the canines in chief. Champ joined the biden family in 2008. Then two years ago, the bidens adopted major from the delaware humane association. Majors gonna be the very first shelter dog to live here in the white house. The two german shepherds have already been featured on social media. The bidens are very proud of their dogs, and sources close to major and champ tell me they cant wait to run around the white house north lawn. Back to lester. All right, thanks for that update and that great information. Lets turn to another story now thats in the news, and that of course is the coronavirus. You guys have probably heard people talking about the race for a vaccine. Officials say there are several vaccines that are in late stage trials right now, meaning they are still being tested. But why is a vaccine so important . And just how does it work . Our friend, Kristen Dahlgren takes a closer look. [kristen] so what exactly is a vaccine . We asked some of you. A vaccine is a shot that you get at the doctor so you dont get sick. Its a shot to make you feel better. I dont really like shots, but its a vaccine that gives you a shot that helps you. That helps your body get better. It is medicine that makes your immune system stronger to face viruses and bacteria. When a vaccine gets into your body, it stimulates antibodies that help your body fight against these illnesses. I think it does prevent you getting that sickness. [kristen] exactly. A vaccine is something that can help prevent you from getting sick. It does that by actually giving you a tiny bit of whatever germ youre looking to fight. So when they give you that tiny bit of the germ into the body its so that the body can recognize you dont belong here. [kristen] think of it like building an army against that germ. [shilpa] when that enemy or that disease that were protecting you against comes into the body it says, oh, youre the enemy. You dont belong here. And then all the little soldiers in the body will fight it so that they will protect you. So its kind of like practicing that fight. Yes, its like, if you do soccer or football or baseball, the more you practice, the better off you are. [kristen] the germs in the vaccine are changed so they dont get you sick. Its one of the reasons it takes a while to create a vaccine and make sure its safe. It takes a lot of testing on different people. Right now some scientists are even testing on kids as young as 12. Kids are our most precious commodity. We are not just going to say, hey, here we go, were going to give this vaccine to kids. We have to make sure that all the trials are done appropriately and that it is safe and effective to be given some kids. [kristen] when we do have a safe vaccine, doctors and nurses will probably get it first so that they can safely take care of those who are sick. Eventually there should be enough for everyone and doctors say most of us should get it. In the meantime, dr. Patel says wear your mask, keep washing your hands, and continue to social distance. But what Everybody Needs to realize is were trying really, really hard to protect everybody. Just Everybody Needs to do their part to help us. And someday soon more help may come from an important vaccine. All right, kristen, thanks as always. Time that answers some of your weekly questions in our ask the doc segment. And my question is if youre six feet away, can you take off your mask . Bye. All right, good question, bridget. Dr. John, what about it . And lester, i think a lot of us have had bridgets question. Were around other people, but were six feet away, do we still need to wear a mask . And for the most part, the answer is yes, for a couple reasons. Number one, if youre around a lot of other people, you might not always stay six feet away. They might pass close to you. You might actually get close to them. And so its important that you have the mask on. Plus, you need to realize that six feet is a starting point. Youre safe at six feet. Youre safer at 12 feet. So it helps to have this mask on if youre on other people that arent from your own household, just to make sure you and your family are safe. All right, our second question is about the upcoming Holiday Season and one that weve received a bunch of submissions wondering about one thing, take a listen. Hello, my name is daniela, and im seven years old. I live in cupertino, california. I have one question. How will santa come if its covid19 . Bye. I like nbc nightly news kids edition. Hello, my name is caleb park from california. And my question is while the pandemic in christmas, can santa come to our houses and spread joy to others . And if he is able to come, should we quarantine our presents . Thank you. Well, dr. John, i can see from the sweater and the lights youve given this one, a lot of thought, what do you have to say . And lester, youre right . These are questions that kids around the world have because theyre worried about santa coming for christmas. Trust me, hes gonna be coming this christmas. And hes doing everything he can to make sure that not only he, but that you and your family are safe as well. So heres some of the things that theyre doing at the north pole. At santas workshop, theyre actually staying in their quarantine pods. Theyre testing themselves on a regular basis to make sure they dont have coronavirus or the covid19. And theyre gonna quarantine themselves starting december 10th. Thats two weeks before he goes out on Christmas Eve to deliver presents around the world. When he does go out, before he goes down the chimney, of course, hes gonna put a mask on. Hes gonna make sure that he sanitizes his hands correctly. Hes gonna go in there, deliver the presents, and then go ahead and go back out. But theres some important things you can do to help out as well. Number one, you wanna make sure that youre in your bedroom and asleep, because you have to social distance from santa so he can stay safe and protected and he can protect other kids around the world. Also, you wanna make sure that this year, dont put out any cookies or milk or any of those things you typically put out, because hes not gonna be able to eat or drink those. Simply leave a note for him saying, thank you so much. Its wonderful having you come to my house. Something like that. And then you wanna make sure that in the morning, before you open presents, you talk to your parents about which ones you can open. You dont need to quarantine your presents. They should be safe because santa is taking all the precautions he needs to to make sure that not only that hes safe, but that mrs. Claus, the elves, and that youre safe as well this christmas time period. All right, kids, i hope that answer makes you happy. It makes me happy. Dr. John torres, as always, thanks so much. You bet. All right, now we wanna switch gears and bring you our inspiring kids series, where we shine a spotlight on young people who are going above and beyond to lend a helping hand. Today we wanna introduce you to a 10yearold from texas whose small act of kindness has become a big deal for some families in need this thanksgiving. Orion jean is trying to bring his Community Together one meal at a time. With help from neighbors, the fifth grader is packing and donating bags of food and water to families in need in the Dallas Fort Worth area of texas. Knowing that the people that are in the community that youre trying to help are coming together for Something Like this, it really feels special. [lester] its all part of orions race to 100,000 meals before thanksgiving. He even includes inspiring notes in the packages. And for this one, im putting we are all rooting for you. Thanksgiving is a holiday about being thankful for what you do have and not minding what you dont have. Unfortunately, though, there are many people across america and across the world that dont have anything to eat on thanksgiving, much less any other day. [lester] the 10yearold is hoping to change that, already collecting some 45,000 meals in a few short weeks. It feels exciting. It may take a while. It may take up friday or saturday nights, but it is definitely worth it in the end. Knowing that i am able to help. [lester] orion has been paving the way, not only through his actions, but his words. He recently won the 2020 National Kindness speech competition. The thing is, kindness is a virtue we can all possess, if we are willing to. So why not start today . Because right now its what we need more than ever. [lester] by thanksgiving day orion hopes he and his neighbors can reach their goal. But most of all, this young boy with a kind heart just wants to lend a helping hand. Kindness matters. It can be a small act of kindness or a big act of kindness. But kindness matters. It is the effort and the thought in your head and the kind feeling in your heart that matters the most. Well, speaking of traveling by air, weve got a great story to share with you now about a librarian in virginia, whos come up with a unique way to help make sure kids are getting their reading in without even leaving home. And its creating quite a buzz, shall we say . Heres kevin tibbles. [kevin] look up in the sky. Its a bird, its a plane, its a book. Yes, here in montgomery county, virginia, the middle School Library is beating the pandemic by delivering books to kids with a drone. 10yearold Camden Robertson couldnt believe his eyes. I was like bouncin off the walls crazy excited. [kevin] making sure kids get their reading in is the brain child of middle school librarian, kelly passek. And its free. Ive seen lots and lots of smiles from happy kids with their books. So it is certainly exciting to get a package from the drone. And then when you open the package and youve got the book that youve been waiting to read, or that you have asked for, and it comes right to your house, thats really an exciting time. [kevin] the school board partnered with the Parent Company of google to deliver the books, which arrive by air mail, literally. Camden received john grishams, Theodore Boone kid lawyer. To participate, kids can order the books online. Some 600 students in the christianburg, Virginia Area are eligible. This drone thing is really quite interesting. Maybe i could get into the act and become the worlds first drone reporter, dropping in to do interviews. drones buzzing second grader, aliyah chakrabarti, has received countless books in recent months. They breathe fire. [kevin] and shes kept busy reading them all. When the drone comes i feel very excited and very happy. And then i just go to my room and start reading. Wing is the name of the drone service, the first to receive permission to deliver packages by air in the United States. Theyre also doing it in finland and australia. And hey, if they can deliver books, maybe they can deliver other things, too. What are you gonna do when they start delivering your homework by drone . Oooooh. I dont know. Maybe youll be hiding under your bed that day. Wow, kevin, that was really great. Thank you for bringing us that story. Well, while you guys have been busy doing your schoolwork, some others have been having quite a field day. Videos of these penguins going on field trips in chicago back in the spring went viral. The Shedd Aquarium had to shut down for a little while due to the pandemic, so these birds decided to spread their wings, so to speak, and venture out. And then in may, four chicks were hatched, and now theyre making their rounds with the rest of the penguin colony. Here now is our pal jackson daly with more on these penguins. Hi nikki. So weve been covering you guys for a while now. In may the chicks were born, and the first field trip happened. Then in july, we came back and checked in on you, how have the chicks been doing . Hey jackson, they are doing wonderful. So the chicks are fully integrated into our penguin colony at this point. So if we do have any visitors to the aquarium, which all are always welcome, you can come down to the penguin habitat and see them all hanging out with everybody. Thats amazing. Finally theyre with their family. Last time they had a field trip, and i heard they just did another one. Howd that go . Its been going well. The chicks have been going on many different field trips and adventures as do all of the rest of our penguins. So thats just something that we do pretty regularly. Its just a form of enrichment for them to keep them mentally stimulated and physically active. So its something thats super healthy for them to just get out and around and see something new each and every day. Perfect. Last time we were here, the chicks didnt have any names. Have they been named yet . They have. So we actually found out, out of the four chicks that hatched out here at shedd this last year, we have three boys and one girl. And the penguin thats sitting on my lap right now is one of our boys, and his name is porter. And porter was named after a member of the john g. Shedd family. Awww, thats so cute. Thank god that there are three boys. Thats the opposite of me and my sisters. nikki laughing one thing i loved about that first field trip was when the penguin got to meet that big whale.
