Unless you are alone in your car or with your mebs of your household. Counties moving backwards because cases are spiking upward. Hospitals seeing an influx of patients and many of them are in the icu. A closer look. We saw this before when the hospitals were just overrun. We are starting to see that again. Hospitalization and admissions have gone up over 35 . Just in the last two weeks. That percentage appears to be growing quickly. Our county like many counties is seeing a significant and rapid up tick in cases. Its not just the number of cases its about how fast this happened. Santa clara Health Officer is concerned about the rise lg hospitalization ratd and since the surge is happening across the state, any county that starts running low on hospital beds it may not be able to rely on other counties for help. San hoz the number of Covid Patients jumped from 18 to 44 patients in three weeks. Onethird are in icu. The hospital says it does have enough ppe sp beds. But it is strategizing on how to increase capacity if the surge continues. We have over flow units and expand into areas that can be modified to take either icu care or med surge. Regional Medical Center is working to beef up staff. The positive rate is 4. 6 . All time low of 2. 5 was one month ago. Its alarming situation. Across the bay area right now. Many counties dropped back but two tiers. Health officials warn this months ago and we know its hard. Pandemic fatigue. Holidays are coming up. Its best it lock down if you can again and dont go out unless necessary. You brought up the holiday. That comes next. The decisions about thanksgiving. Which is next week. Based on what happened today from the governor, we got a lot of guidance. Thanksgiving and Holiday Plans will change dramatically. In the state of california. The tone from Governor Newsom was bleak from the start. This is the fastest increase california has seen since the beginning of the pandemic. Covid19 cases spiking across the state. More than 7,000 new cases daily for two weeks and total cases doubling in ten days. We have faired better than the national average, we dont compare ourself to the average. We can do more and we can do better. Many expect the spike in cases after the holiday. They are seeing it before. Raising fear it could get worse in people get together for the holiday. The state secretary of health and Human Services is begging everyone to enjoy the holidays remotely. Because the risk of passing on the virus when you are gathering inside is just too great. Because San Francisco now in the red tier. Transmission is considered substantial. Breed says only essential workers will be allowed in offices and gyms have to cut back to 10 . Lets do what we can. If you are unable to maintain a social distance of six feet. Thank you. A closer look at the surge of cases across california. Of the daily new cases since the pandemic began. Take a look. California peek midsummer july 21. Almost 13,000 new cases on that day. After that, the cases declined dramatically. Then here we are now. November 14. Almost 11,000 new cases. What about all the people that need to be hospitalized for covid . Hospitalization rate. At the peek california had more than 8,000 patients. Right now half of that just over 4,000. As we mention numbers usually the hospital numbers surge two to three weeks after the case numbers rise. Based on that hospitals could be dealing with the flood of patients by middecember. All right lets talk about the weather. New round of rain headed our way. A live look this evening. It was very nice outside today. And its nice outside tonight. Thats about to change. Chief meteorologist joining us. Youre talking about 24 hours from now. Well see rain. Thats right. Widespread rainfall for the bay area. I want to start off with a look at storm ranger. Youll see it is dry all across the bay. Through the south bay. Peninsula. East bay and up to the north bay. Storm system is just offshore. This is going to be different than the past couple weaker storms. Those have dropped down from the north. This is lining up more parallel to the coastline. Which is better for pick up pacific moisture. And a weak atmospheric rif. Early preview of the time line. 7 00 tomorrow morning. Moving into the north bay. A longer duration event than were used to. Well keep the rain chances through tomorrow evening. We badly need this rainfall. We have had some wet weather it hasnt been enough to help us on the drought. A lot of the bay area is in extreme drought. Which of course is keeping that fire danger higher and producing crop damage. Well take you through the hour by hour time line of the storm system. And get a look at where we are so far for the rainfall season. Thank you. We should remind everyone another great resource with the wet weather coming is to get an update on the rain. As it moves in. Down load it. It will give you forecast ta alreadied to your neighborhood. It is hard to catch a break. Were talking from fires to mud slide. Take a look at this video from the burn scar from the fire that burned in san matt county and santa cruz. In august. With rain on the way people who live there in the fire zones are concerned that the now barren hillsides could start sliding. We go into the mountain areas and the communities to see what theyre doing to get ready. Reporter trying to get ahead of the rain work crews and the Boulder Creek fire zone are clearing out culverts hoping to make this area as debris free as possible. People who live here are doing the same. Getting ready for the rain. We clean off the driveway. Waef long driveway. Make sure the culverts are working. Its hard to clean them once theres water standing around. The massive fire that burned through miles of the mountains destroyed plant life that helps slow down the flow of water during storms and holds hillsides together sgr we were at the edge of the evacuation zone. There was enough tension around our neighborhood. Now the source of that tension is shifting from flames to flooding. It sure seems like a lot more people were cutting down trees and cleaning up property. After the last wild fire. Than i had seen before. Setting the stage for what could be a long winter in the hills. One of the hazards of living where its so beautiful. We put up with that. We can live up here and see this all the time. Crews clearing away debris say the biggest concern is once the rains come, it will bring more fire damaged debris down the hill to take its place. Thank you. Up next a new turn in the race for the coronavirus. A second vaccine now showing promise. The reason it will be easier to distribute than the first one. Pay the price but own the mistake. There it is. What he says he should have done when he showed up to a friends Birthday Party. At the upscale restaurant. Then there were two. More encouraging news tonight in the race for a covid19 vaccine. Early data from the phase 3 trial shows the vaccine is nearly 95 effective. At preventing infection. This is the second potential breakthrough na week. Last monday pfizer announced early data shows its 90 effective. Both could be granted emergency use authorization in a few weeks. Joining me now. A professor and chair for the department of epidemiology and statistics at ucsf. Lets talk about this. Second vaccine. Last week it was pfizer and we have two. That doesnt mean well have enough vaccines to give a huge number of people. You wont really have chase as to which you get, right . Thats right. I think theres cause for us to be optimistic and in fact excited. It takes a long time to develop vaccines. We realize we have not one but two. That are effective. And highly effective it appears at stopping lt spread of the coronavirus. That is cause for us to be optimistic. It sound like there are plans that it might be as early as spring for the general population to start to receive vaccines. This is a big effort. Theres reason to be optimistic. Which sound great to know well do it in spring. Rite now we have a huge roll back that the governor put out. We have kept talking about how things were going to get worse in the winter. Were not actually in the winter yet. Flu season hasnt officially really gone crazy yet. And were seeing the spike. How do you explain that . Is it fatigue . Its a combination of all the things. Weather is cooler. And were going inside. We have opened up and we knew the cases would rise a bit as were opening up. And then people get tired. And are general practices of masking and distancing. Some people are elapsing in those. And more people gathering in large groups. Regardless the key message is california is not in the kris state that we see throughout the country. But a state with need to be cautious particularly as we go into thanksgiving. And the winter holiday. To make sure that those times that are riskier that we go in with the lowest possible transmission. Thats the reason for the governors really very strict order today. A will the of people are saying were not having that thanksgiving. It is what it is. The governor is talking about maybe a potential curfew. Do you think we have to push that far at this point . What we know about california and the reason why california cases have been lower than most of the rest of the country is because we tend to be proagecti and not reactive. Were cautious early. I dont think were going to get there. The difference will be if everyone really takes it seriously over the thanksgiving holiday. Stay with your family. Dont travel. Stay with the people you have been in your pod in your bubble. Whatever it is. We want everyone to be around and benefit from those vaccines and the spring. To do that we have to last through the few months of being strict with the interactions with other people. Thank you. Another part of governors broefing he addressed the French Laundry faux pas. And apologized for violating guidelines. The governor and miz wife attended a Birthday Party at the French Laundry restaurant. They did dine outside. However the guests at this party were from at least three different households. I shouldnt have been there. I should have turned back around. And when that happens you have to pay the price. You own the mistake. And dont make it again. You have my word on that. Hes owning it. He added covid fatigue is exhausting. Yes. We have had this beautiful sunshine to at least lift our spirits a bit. That will change now. We have that rainfall coming in. And this storm system will hold some higher totals than we have been used to lately. We got it last friday. And that was really nice. And this is going to help to boost things up and keep that immediate fire danger down. The forecast i want to show you where the storm system is. Still offshore. Several hours before that arrives tomorrow morning, theres a weak Atmospheric River tap. Well be good for the totals to be approaching one inch. Let me bring you into the weather dash board. Youll see i want to look so far at the rainfall season. See how we are doing at this point. The big headline is we need a lot more rainfall. Were running a rain deficit of close to one and a half inches in san jose and nearly four inches behind in santa rose. We have to pick up more. This storm system will be good to out of the totals. Take umbrella and jacket through tomorrows forecast. I think once we hit 11 00 a. M. The north bay will be under this rainfall. And start to see it develop over the east bay and the peninsula. We roll through the afternoon and evening, those rain chances will stay with us. The rain out look over the next two weeks is promising. With above average chances through the west coast. Its exactly what we need. Coming up, ill have details on exactly how much rainfall we pick up. And the see ra snow three weeks away theyre hit with snowfall. Good for the snow pack.
