Theres no shipping it to a lab and waiting days for the results. The fda says this is important for getting people tested and to do it faster. All right, jessica, heres how it works. You swab your nose, swirl that swab in a vial, and then put it in a portable device that will tell you if you have covid or not, results within 30 minutes. Heres the catch. You need a prescription to get the test. Though word yet when these tests will be available or how much itll cost. So for now normal testing continues, and testing in any form will be critical this holiday season. While Health Officials are urging us not to gather with family if you feel you have to then testing may be the option for you. Nbc bay areas cheryl hurd found out in some areas testing can be a challenge. Reporter a danville city councilman, but the job hes most proud of is husband and father. The only way he will sit down for thanksgiving dinner with his family this year is to get a covid test. I want to see my daughter. I want to see my son and my daughterinlaws and sonsinlaws and we just cant do that unless were absolutely certain. If we did it, itd be like playing roulette with yourself. We have to be safe for our family. Reporter Contra Costa County is offering testing for families concerned about covid exposure at this concord site. We just want to be safe. Were going to meet some family over it holiday, and we want to protect ourselves and protect them as well. Reporter Health Officials say testing is recommended but not foolproof. To get tested doesnt guarantee your safety. It can reduce the risk, and it is a more added protection to safely celebrating during the holidays. Reporter daily coronavirus testing jumped nearly 50 in the last month. Quest diagnostics, one of the countrys largest labs says its turn around time is getting longer. The average more than two days. But health and Human Services tells nbc news the supply concerns are overstated. There are different situations in every state. Here in Contra Costa County covid tests are available. To 6 00 a. M. Curfew for nonessential workers. Tonight this is what it looks like outside the restaurant in north hollywood. Restaurants are allowed 50 capacity outdoors and Retail Stores allowed only 25 capacity indoors. All must close by 10 00 p. M. Well, curfew or not doctors say these next two weeks will be critical. Hospitalizations are expected to increase but by how much depends on every day decisions by all of us. Nbc bay areas ian cull has the latest look what the experts are recommending. Reporter tonight as covid cases spike throughout the state and Country Health leaders hope new restrictions will be enough to slow the increase in hospitalizations. Doctors urging people to not have big thanksgiving gatherings. I understand everyones tired of covid and they just want to get together and see family. But again, if we want to have thanksgiving 2021 we have to be cautious in thanksgiving 2020. Reporter Health Officials say about 12 of cases will translate into hospitalizations in two to three weeks. The increase can be seen at local hospitals. Santa clara hospitals had 87 Covid Patients in midoctober. Today there are 151. In San Francisco a similar trend. October 18th, 17 Covid Patients hospitalized. This week 39 patients. Ive gotten more calls today than in the last couple days. Reporter dr. Anne lieu is an Infectious Disease physician at Stanford Health care. She says luckily hospitals here are not overwhelmed like other states yet. We have capacity now, we have medications, we have ppe, but things can change very quickly. Reporter she says its crucial people do all they can to slow the spread in the next two weeks, wear a mask and socially distance. And if everybody started doing what they needed to do and stuck with it and were really consist with it all the Time Starting from now in a month there would be very few cases. Reporter here at san joses Regional Medical center the number of Covid Patients theyre treating has doubled in the past three weeks. They say there are additional floors they could open up to treat those patients if necessary but no one wants to get to that critical point. Ian cull, nbc bay area news. Well, thanksgiving dinner will look a lot different next week. Coming up ten minutes from now the way bay area businesses are handling the challenges with turkey dinners to go. Were also following breaking news out of San Francisco. The man is in the hospital tonight after being shot by police. It happened just a few hours ago. Officers say it started with the report of a man in a fight armed with a knife. Nbc bay areas Terry Mcsweeney has more from us. Reporter investigators still at the scene of the shooting. Evidence markers can be seen on Market Street between fourth and fifth directly across from the powell street cable car turn around. Officers arrived on scene and located a male who was brandishing a knife. Reporter Police Say Officers tried to dediffuse the situation without using guns. A San Francisco sheriffs deputy was also on scene and deployed a taser. Reporter but at some point at least one officer shot the man with the knife. His condition not being released. Police say they have body cam and surveillance videos and have spoken to some witnesses. They hope to have much more information tomorrow. A number of investigations into the shooting are under way including one by the district attorneys office, another by the San Francisco pds internal affairs unit. Terry, thank you. What do you expect for the snow up there but for us down here in the lower elevations . I think overall well hang onto the chance a bit of rainfall. Youre going to need to keep those umbrellas handy as we move through tomorrows forecast. As expected the north bay had the highest numbers. 0. 57 in santa rosa, East San Jose with 0. 21. Downtown san jose not as much, only. 27, we had real serious rain shadowing happening there. Now, we do have rainfall a little batch here near San Francisco right now moving off towards the east. This will likely keep the chance of some showers here into hayward as we hit 11 54 tonight and down in the south bay some hit and miss activity in san jose and more consistent showers expected to continue into morgan hill certainly through the next hour. Well talk about that rain chance for tomorrow, the sierra snow and when some dangerous fog could roll back in. Ill see you in ten minutes. And it was just very angering to like see that come to our front door. Reporter she says her family has gone the extra mile to be good neighbors. Be extra nice, say yes, maam, yes, sir which i feel its sick we even have to feel that way. Even though were trying to be good black people in their good white neighborhood they still treated us this way. Reporter 13yearold zier says its the first time hes ever faced Something Like this. He says its eye opening and hurtful. We are not afraid to stand up for ourselves. We have the right to walk our dogs, to ride our bikes, and i feel like this goes for all the black people that live in a white neighborhood. Reporter we knocked on the womans door but she didnt answer. The jones want others to see and hear what happened and the kinds of things people of color face. It dont matter if you grew up in a gated community your whole life, its bound to happen. Its going to happen. Sonoma county and four of its cities there are suing pg e. The government along with open space district and other agencies claim pg e was negligent in causing the kinkade fire last year. The lawsuit seeks compensation for damage to land, roads and environmental resources. Back in july a cal Fire Investigation traced the cause to pg e transmission lines located outside of geyserville. Pg e released a statement tonight saying the transmission tower in question was inspected multiple times in 2019, adding while were continuing to conduct our own investigation pg e does not have access to cal fires reports. She says her team could try and take more orders but theres a supply issue. I dont think we can adanymore orders because everything like the take out containers and all that stuff is sold out. Reporter with covid19 group restricts in mind theyre only offering a small meal. Our set is only designed to serve maybe four adults. And we specifically made that choice to not make it any bigger because we didnt want to encourage like a bigger thanksgiving. Reporter pie sales are still big at butter love bakeshop. Most are three pies under where in past years there was large groups. A lot of people are also getting pies not just for their families but as gifts for people. This would bring you more rain here in oakland through 11 53 tonight and san jose has dried out from some of those showers. But morgan hill and gilroy, still looking at shower activity here. What about the rain tomorrow . Youll notice how we have these isolated spotty little showers here popping up for the morning so nothing too heavy. But expect the clouds and some intermittent showers. Once we hit about 11 00 in the morning theres a little bit of instability with some of this moving through the north bay, and thats where well have to watch out for maybe an isolated thunderstorm. All in the all the coverage of rain maybe not as widespread as today, but well keep that chance and gradually see things moving on out by tomorrow night. Snow in the sierra, be ready for some winter conditions up here. Were looking at a foot or more for those highest elevations overnight into tomorrow, so be ready for that. And right here across San Francisco well dry out thursday right through this weekend with upper 60s and notice on thursday we do have some ground fog that could develop. I really want you to be thinking about that if you have to go anywhere on thursday morning. Its that thicker fog and can be really dangerous to drive through.
