KNTV Today In The Bay July 11, 2024

Cold in the house and cold as you step out the door. We will warm up to highs in the mid60s. We still dont have any rain in the forecast and at times will have gusty winds. Im tracking that and well talk about whats ahead coming up in a few minutes. Mike, any problems for the morning commute . There was an issue at the bay bridge toll plaza there is an issue. Its reported in lane one, one of the hov lanes at the bottom of our screen. A disabled vehicle just passed the metering lights. The slowing not a surprise. We look at the map, that tends to happen as the volume builds out of the maze and slowing, traditional pattern. Most of the bay very light. In fact, all the bay very light. We do still have some slowing im tracking. Back to you. All right, thank you very much. Were also tracking some new restrictions across the bay area from san jose up the peninsula to San Francisco. Millions are now under new covid restrictions. In Santa Clara County travelers returning home were told to quarantine for two weeks. Take a look. Nearly all of the bay area is in the most restrictive tier. They slid back over the weekend. Marin is the only county still in the less restrictive red tier. Today in the bays Cierra Johnson live where new School Reopenings are actually taking place despite the climb in cases, cierra. Reporter yes, good morning. Marin county is in a category of its own. It is in the red tier and surrounded by those in the purple tier. They will be opening this morning am just to give you an idea how unique this county is well break down counties across the state right now 51 counties are currently in the purple category and just six including marin county are in red and then theres one lone county in orange. It is important to note those counties in purple make up near ly 40 Million People of the states population. The majority of the state is unlike marin. So right now this county stands out because they have restrictions. Mill Valley School district is reopening all Elementary Schools and the middle school. In a letter to parents both the superintendent and the School Principal at this particular school emphasize they are encouraged to quarantine when needed and aspects like the pick yum and the dropoff will be a little different. Drivers are to meet at designated gates when its their time to pick up and drivers are to remain inside of their cars. And while today is a big day for the district some of the parents feel the districtay have moved a bit too fast when going back in school while others feel social interaction and that inperson learning is necessary. Take a listen. Im extremely worried. I think this is the worst time we could have started. Increased depression, anxiety, all maladaptive behaviors. Reporter so the high school in this district is expected to reopen at some point in january. It is important to note that School Districts that are currently in a purple tier county may not reopen because of the number of cases but we are coming off of thanksgiving so well be keeping a close eye on where those cases go for the next two or three weeks. Typically a spike like we saw after fourth of july and some of the other holidays, so we will be sure to keep a close eye on whats happening after thanksgiving as we inch closer to the christmas holiday. Cierra johnson for today in the bay. Youre right, it will be interesting to see where the numbers go from here. Thank you, cierra. Thats where supervisors tomorrow are going to make a controversial plan to better track housing inventory, asking landlords for rental information each year on the citys 230,000 rental units including rent rates and vacancies. The festival goes through january. Bundle up if youre headed out the door on this monday morning. Its a cool start. A chilly start to our morning, kari. Yes, and some of us are below freezing. I wanted to show you the temperatures were seeing right now all around the bay area. 27 degrees in ukiah and 28 in clear lake. Were below freezing in some of those spots and we are very close elsewhere with the trivalley, just one degree above freezing and seeing the same in the south county. Make sure that you are wearing some extra layers as you head out for the commute this morning. Most likely the heater on in the car. Were going to see our temperatures going from the 30s to the 60s today. So a nice warmup ahead. Well talk about whats ahead for the rest of the week coming up. Mike, whats going on as a lot of people head out the door . Yeah, kari. Some folks will be glad theyre going now because theres a slower drive for them. Lets look at the map. Overall its green. A smooth drive. The bit of slowing for san jose cleared up really nicely. We do still have slowing out of the altamont and highway 84 cutting through livermore and into sunol. No surprises for the pattern. A lighter volume overall. The bay bridge, look at this. The sensors across the span, you see the arrow and the slowing towards the San Francisco side, so lets get a live look at the toll plaza, once that slowing happens over to the city we do have the meet terg lights turned on. Out of oakland and on to the span. A little more traffic. Back to you. Laura . Thanks so much. Take a look at this, mike. Way too close to a natural disaster. This is video from indonesia. Thousands of people fleeing from an erupting volcano. The eruption sent a column of ash two and a half miles into the sky. It forced the local airport to close as ash then rained down on the area. Despite how close it got to people no deaths or injuries reported. Well, a brightly burning meteor was seen plunging from the skies across japan, capturing the attention of television and social media. See if you can see it here. That meteor gross stronger as it rapidly descended to the earths atmosphere. This was last night. Some experts say the small fragments of the meteor might have reached the ground. On that one you make a really big wish when you see it. I wish, i wish, i wish. 6 11 for you this morning. A union city group of volunteers delivered tokens of appreciation to police officers. Yeah, ten young adults from the World Mission Society Church of god dropped off 90 care packages to the police department, one for every single officer on the force. Volunteers say theyve been doing similar campaigns to honor frontline workers all summer and fall. Here is one of those volunteers. Our ultimate goal is to share love with the community especially in a time people are going through a hard time. Were in Uncertain Times so we want everyone to be encouraged with love. Between covid and everything in the world we really appreciate the small things that people do for one another. They really go a long way to improving the overall morale of our department. Thats really nice. Loving and caring. Officers were impressed. The care packages all had a handwritten letter in them as well. Nice to see that giving spirit. The holidays are tough for a lot of people in the bay area. You can help out, make the holidays brighter. The next time youre at safeway you can make a 10 donation. It goes to local food banks to help so many of those families in need right now. Go to your safeway, donate that 10 and you can do that through december 29th. I know all of us miss doing that in person. Good morning to you. A very happy monday as well. Business world still reacting with surprise and shock after the death of entrepreneur tony hsieh over the weekend. He apparently had been in a house fire weeks earlier, died in the hospital on friday. Hsieh created zappos and later used his riches to rebuild distressed parts of las vegas. He was 46 years old. Tony had a very unusual management style but one of the most unusual things was pay employees to quit. If they took him up on the offer they made money and his company got rid of somebody who clearly didnt want to be there. Amazon has published a lengthy explanation as to why its web services had so much trouble last week. Few people realize until the service went down how many things depend on aws. So when it ran into trouble just before thanksgiving ring doorbells stopped working. People had trouble logging into their capital one accounts. Netflix suffered some outages. People couldnt get their roombas to start. Its back up and running now. Wall street pleased to hear moderna will file for emergency use of its vaccine today. On friday markets saw a mild gain. The big jobs number tomorrow. And this is the week that tiktok is supposed to shut down if it does not sell itself to an american company. The company said its having trouble contacting regulators. The regulators seem to have lost interest and the croods was the number one movie at the box office. There are some movie theaters open and the movie set a record for the biggest hit of the pandemic bringing in around 10 million over the weekend. Now i should point out the movie was distributed by universal, part of our parent company. 10 million to put it in context, marcus and laura, not a lot of money. Frozen 2 brought in 181 million this time last year, the same weekend. But 10 million now so far as far as the number one movie of the pandemic. There you go. So many changes. Thanks so much. Well, business booming for san jose zoom. Sales growth expected to more than triple for a Second Straight Quarter when the results are announced today. Distance learning and working from home is translating into huge profits. But investors are starting to look past the pandemic as well. Positive vaccine news earlier this month actually sparked an initial selloff. Trending for you this morning some armchair book detectives have an interesting case on their hands. So an author hid a short story in 1,000 copies of his book. Last month the writer will maclean released his debut novel the apparition phase and rather than just signing 1,000 copies he left a single word in each one. So together all 1,000 of those books form a short story so people are now coming together on twitter to try to solve that puzzle. You can see right there the number 344 so you find all of those and put them together. I cant wait to find out what the short story is all about. Thats pretty brilliant. It gets people to buy the book. A good little marketing try there. So many of us working from ho home. Youve been holding down the studio. What if you take that studio to hawaii. They are hoping higher paid workers will relocate and choose to work from home. Its the cubicle versus hawaii, hawaiian leaders are throwing in roundtrip tickets to the first 50 people who get approved. Hawaiis economy relies largely on tourism which is way down, and they have those strict testing requirements as well from travelers arriving there plus quarantine. Workers there can earn extra income. It can hopefully bolster their economy. So what do you think . Today in the bay hawaii edition . I think we should do it. You could get the tropical shirts. Kari with a grass skirt. Truly taking the show on the road. You have to get the test before you go, get the test while youre there. We should do the whole month of december there. Lets call the managers and see what they have to say. Whats that . This just in. Okay, get on with the forecast now. I mean, with these cold temperatures we probably wish we were in hawaii this morning. Its been so cold, and we are starting out clear. Take a live look outside in san jose as we await the suns arrival that will help warm us up today. Here is a look at where were starting. Were at 37 degrees in fair field. Compare that to santa rosa, napa, one degree above freezing right now and its also near freezing in the trivalley and morgan hill. After this cold start get outside but wait until later this morning because if you go jogging this morning, you do need to wear some extra layers as our temperatures will be in the mid30s in the trivalley and then going into the rest of the day its going to feel much nicer. I think around noon its going to be much more comfortable. In fact, as we look at our microclimates were going to our noontime temperatures as well as 2 00 in the afternoon when we reach the warmest part of the day. Were in the mid60s for much of the bay area. But then if youre heading out for a walk later this evening after dinner its going to be already starting to cool off. Were back in the upper 50s heading down into the upper 30s and lower 40s as we go into tonight as well as tomorrow. But it may be a little bit more gusty tomorrow. Were going to see the approach of a weather system that will weaken before it gets here. This has been the trend that were stuck in as High Pressure builds across the region. All of those cold fronts that near are drying up and were not expecting any rain between now and at least the next ten days, unfortunately. And we really do need a lot of this rain to move in because were in an extreme drought across parts of the north bay. Gusty winds, dry vegetation, still talking about the risk of high fire danger and were once again not seeing anything thats going to help us out there. So well have to keimep a close eye on the winds the next few days. Mike, youre watching the morning commute. Whats going on right now . Well, kari, were not able to commute yet on a bridge to hawaii from that story we just talked about but at least from oakland to San Francisco this commute is moving pretty predictably. The metering lights have been on for just about 15 minutes and so this is what we see filling in all lanes now as we look at the map. You see no problems for the maze or the east shore freeway. Its a smooth drive. The arrow shows you the toll plaza with a little slowing on the decline from Treasure Island into San Francisco. Widening out a little slowing for highway 84. I did catch a glimpse of a little blip westbound 92 heading across the san mateo bridge. Lets get a look with our camera. We see the volume there. Not a problem. The taillights heading away from us would be where we saw some slowing, perhaps right around the toll plaza, maybe tapping brakes because of a few more cars. Back to you. All right, thanks, mike. 6 20 right now and im not afraid to say this, it is girl power monday around here. Up next for you meet sarah fuller who went toe to toe with the best of them in college football. Her history making game up next for you. Youre watching today in the bay. Its not easy now with this pandemic. Second harvest makes me really really happy. Meatballs, mexican rice, chicken enchiladas, and mole. For almost twenty years. Speaki
