Some hope tonight as the first batch of vaccines is about to get shipped to states across the country. It comes just as hospitals continue to be overwhelmed. In the San Joaquin Valley hospitals have run out of icu beds. Here in the bay area were just teetering above that 15 threshold. The county joins marin, San Francisco, contra costa, alameda and santa clara counties. The new restrictions impacts wineries, tasting rooms and much, much more. Heres nbc bay areas christie smith. Reporter its the first full day of the changes here in Sonoma County. Weve been speaking with businesses. Some say they do notice fewer people out and about. Others say it was already pretty quiet before this. So were surrounded by wineries and restaurants. Its a huge part of what draws people to sonoma. The shop is open and ready for business, but they do notice a difference this saturday. Our foot traffic is much smaller and much lighter than it would be on a typical saturday. So its really impacting just the general kind of visibility especially around the holidays. It should be our busiest time. The outside would be our alfresco tasting patio as it were. Reporter they were allowed to have visitors enjoy wine tasting out in the breezeway but thats changed. So the big shift for us is we are no longer able to serve customers outside. So theres no more wine tasting. Normally youd see high top tables out here and people enjoying wine. Reporter Sonoma County issued a stay at home order after a recent spike in cases. No wine tasting or outdoor dining. I think for us as well as many other wineries is theres a sense of a little bit of panic, like what do you do . What do you do to offset this order, or how do you get creative . Theyre still open to shop and have curbside pickup. Theyve been working to try and meet the challenges this year and customers needs with special offers and more. The biggest thing for us was to really lean into ecommerce and to reach out to our fans that live all over the country and let them know whats going on because we have covid, and then we have the wildfires, and then weve had this bigger more serious surge right now. Restrictions are expected through early january, and many here are hopeful that 2021 will be brighter. In sonoma christie smith, nbc bay area news. Make no mistake distribution has begun. Right now boxes are being packed and loaded with vaccine with emphasis on quality control. The head of operation warp speed says vaccine distributions have already started shipments. We mentioned it earlier, going to arrive by maemd across the u. S. And here in the bay area ucsf expected to get several thousand vaccines within the next week. A spokesperson for the hospital says each box will have 975 doses in each shipment. Stanford expects a delivery of 3,900 doses of the Pfizer Vaccine by wednesday. Plan to start vaccinations on friday. First doses going to go to high risk front line workers. That seems to be the m. O. Weve reached out for details but have not yet heard back from hospital leaders. We mention the cdc panel clearing the vaccine for distribution, but one final step remains before widespread distribution can happen. The cdc director Robert Redfield has to approve the recommendation which he is expected to do quickly. It is clear for people 16 and older. Pregnant women can be vaccinated if they choose, though there is no data on vaccine safety or efficacy for pregnant women. People who have had the virus should still get vaccinated. And anyone with severe aleurgies to vaccines and injectable medication should not get that shot. A bay area doctor we spoke with said she would give similar recommendations. I would favor giving people who are pregnant or breastfeeding the vaccine because theres been some severe outcomes with covid and pregnancy. Ucsf is now working to figure whos going to be the first among its Health Care Workers to get the covid vaccine. Today pleasanton parents and students took to the streets to demand schools reopen. Protesters waving signs that say make a plan and others that say dont give up on kids. Rally organizers say they want district leaders to create a safety plan and allow inperson classes once the county moves back into the red tier. For a second day in a row there were more than 35,000 cases. The state reporting 225 deaths, the most ervin one day. Positivity rate also soaring. It is now at 10. 2 .
