News at six starts right now. Thanks for joining us. Im gia vang and im terry mcsweeney. Tonight, the Postal Service is investigating after yet another mail carrier has been robbed at gunpoint. Happened earlier this week in a quiet peninsula neighborhood. While the carrier was on their route. And its not the only recent postal worker robbery here in the bay area. So what is behind this surge and whats the usps doing to protect workers . Nbc bay areas Christie Smith spoke with a postal inspector. Sad. Very sad. It was an online post that caught this neighbors attention about a letter carrier robbed at gunpoint. The mail carrier during the middle of the day. Its thats just. Ive never heard of it, i guess my husband said hes heard of it in other towns, so were in shock. It happened thursday afternoon in san carlos. People who live in the normally quiet neighborhood near walnut street and Saint Francis way were caught off guard. Im shocked. I wasnt aware we ever had crime like that in this area. U. S. Postal inspector Matthew Norfleet says the mail carrier was not hurt in san carlos last week, a letter carrier was robbed on their route. This is a depressingly common scenario for letter carriers, he says. Here in the bay area, there have been at least five letter carriers robbed in the last two weeks alone. There was also a robbery in san bruno last week, a robbery in milpitas, a robbery in union city and a robbery in oakland, all within about a week of each other. So this is a widespread problem. The postal inspector we spoke with said with these crimes, theres typically a common thread. The target in almost all of these robberies are the keys that the letter carriers carry in order to open mailboxes along the routes and deliver the mail. So the theres only one reason to have one of these keys. If youre not a letter carrier, and thats to steal mail. The crime is not limited to the bay area. The u. S. Postal service says this is happening regularly across the country. We take this crime very seriously. This is an intolerable situation for letter carriers to have to be frightened that theyre going to be robbed on their routes, theyre going to theyre having weapons pointed at them. He points out that postal inspectors are criminal investigators attached to the Postal Service and solving these crimes with local Law Enforcement is their highest priority. The reward for information leading to arrest and conviction of anyone who robs or assaults a postal employee of any kind, including these letter carriers, is up to 150,000. So the Postal Service takes this very seriously. Anybody who has information can contact us in san carlos. Christie smith, nbc, bay area news. If they didnt, they could be disciplined or even face arrest, according to sf chronicle. This morning, Santa Clara County deputies attempted to identify students involved going through the tent encampment. So far, though, we have not heard of any arrests at stanford or Marianne Favro is there speaking with students right now, shell join us with the very latest developments later tonight. Meantime, at sonoma state, students there have set up a similar camp. Theyre protesting their university stance and alleged investment in the war in gaza. Students who organize this protest say they are forming their own chapter of a National Student Organization Called students for justice in palestine. They have four demands for the administration. We would like the school, the administration and the school as a whole to call for a permanent and immediate cease fire. Now that is very important to us. I would also like to add that we are prepared to stay here and occupy the space for as long as it takes, until our demands are met. The University Just gave us a statement a few minutes ago. A spokesperson tells us their main concern is making sure their students and staff are safe during this protest, and they support the demonstrators right to free speech. And more than 200 miles north of there, north of sonoma state, up at cal poly humboldt, propalestinian protests are cooling off. On monday, hundreds of student protesters occupied two separate halls on campus. They also sent a list of demands to the university. Students use furniture, tents, other items to block the doors. The university then ordered the students to vacate the buildings by yesterday or face discipline, while last night protesters dismantled barriers and opened doors. But today the university announced its closing for the rest of the semester, so classes and finals will be remote. Well this Years National crime victims rights week is drawing to a close in oakland. Rebuilding together Silicon Valley recruits, volunteers and sponsors to help low income homeowners with repairs and hundreds of volunteers went out today to east san jose. They made small repairs, touching up paint to 18 different homes. The nonprofit says this event helps bring the community together. Sports clinics for kids very popular. Over in oakland today, there was a clinic and it was there to make sure everybody got a chance to play. Bay area based esports put on this inclusive football clinic for children of all abilities and needs. Kids had a chance to practice football drills with cal Football Players miles williams and b. J. Jones. Very cool. The two volunteer through cals athletics cameron institute, which finds ways for student athletes to serve youth. For jones, who has a brother on the autism spectrum, the connection is personal. Inclusion is obviously important for different kids who might not have the opportunities that other kids have, because obviously typical kids, they can go play sports whenever they want. They can just, you know, like even for me, like i can go to the d1 level and like, play football, but some kids, they dont have that opportunity. So i think really setting up programs like this is really helpful because it makes a community. It allows them to have fun. So cool. Clinic was held at Mcclymonds High School in oakland, okay. This is also very cool terry. It is back. Our sister station, telemundo 48, hosting a youth soccer tournament for the third year in a row. Yeah, elementary and middle school teams facing off today in east san jose. This is for the copa tournament. Telemundo 48 partnering with alum rock unified to put on the event at Overfelt High School tournament started last night. Teams are competing in the playoffs today and tomorrow. The final game, the trophy ceremony families and friends are coming out to watch. Check out the trophies, eat food and play all kinds of activities. Very excited to hear what happens tomorrow. Yeah. All right. Rob mayeda is here now. And rob, you know, blue skies. We also got wind i noticed today. Yeah were going to have more of that tomorrow in fact. And instead of a storm thats going to bring showers our way, it will bring in a few clouds to start tomorrow and plan on more wind in that sunday forecast before temperatures start to climb. Trending warmer towards the middle part of the week. But really, wind is the story of the weekend. Lets look at San Francisco international airport. Wind gusts over 40mph. So you got good visibility. But if any flights are taking off or landing right now, a bit of a bumpy ride. 59 degrees there. Winds sustained out of the west to 26mph, now down to 63 degrees. Clear skies in san rafael, 69 in walnut creek. Also a little windy around Contra Costa County. Weve had those gusts from 20 to 30 this afternoon and breezy into san jose peak. Wind gusts close to 30mph at 64 degrees. We got those clear skies. So sunday, more of a winds day as we wrap up the weekend. 20 to 40 mile per hour gusts strongest along the coast in near San Francisco. 60s and 70s here to wrap up the weekend, but by midweek should see upper 70s to near 80 for highs as High Pressure builds in. So heres the weather system were watching now. It is falling apart in terms of rain chances, but as it scoots on by during the day tomorrow, thats going to lead to the blustery conditions. So notice we start the morning with patchy low clouds along the coast, maybe some spotty drizzle and then clearing skies. Heading into the afternoon. But watch these wind speeds closely. Breezy at times for the morning and then by mid afternoon and evening there you begin to see those areas in red around San Francisco, the coast around marin county and the interior. Diablo range. East bay hills will have guests anywhere from 20 to 40mph tomorrow afternoon, so partly cloudy skies to start with 40s and 50s moving forward to lunchtime tomorrow. More 60s to low 70s for highs. So a somewhat cool weekend, especially when you factor in those wind speeds for sunday. But watch what happens here as the wind speeds start to come down, temperatures starting to climb on up as we head towards tuesday, and especially wednesday. Now out towards Solano County areas south of downtown san jose have a chance of some low 80s, i think for the middle part of the week as we start the month of may, upper 60s and low 70s from San Francisco into oakland. So High Pressure will hold on and strengthen for the middle part of the week as weather systems and rain chances likely stay to the north. As we head through the end of next week. So watching the wind tomorrow, then less wind and more warming as we approach tuesday, wednesday and thursday likely to be the warmest days of the week, should be good for those outdoor plans, except for those the outdoor lawn furnitur
