Last week. I still cant believe nobody can believe that theyre gone. He called my son just two hours before it all happened. What were learning about the family, including two children that passed away and camped out for another night. The latest on protests at stanford and universities across the country as President Biden speaks with israeli Prime Minister netanyahu. The news at six starts right now. Thanks for joining us. Im Terry Mcsweeney and im gia vang. We begin tonight in the east bay. The east Bay Community coming together to remember a family killed in a tragic crash, a memorial organized by friends and Community Members is wrapping up at valle vista park in pleasanton. The family of four killed in a crash wednesday night. Those at the memorial identified the victims as tarin and renzi. George and their two children. Rowan was an eighth grader at Hart Middle School and aaron was a second grader at donlon elementary. Police say speed appears to have been a factor in the crash. The family was driving an electric car on foothill road near stone ridge drive. Investigators say the car hit the curb, crashed into a tree and burst into flames. Family and friends are just devastated. We spoke to one woman whose young son was good friends with the second grader killed. They would call us, call me every day from lunch, recess, from the school that they wanted a play date at. This time at that time. And then we would just schedule with with the mom and see they were they were all really good. And the oldest son was with my daughters classmate. Why him . He was such a young age. Why hes gone. Hes such a such a such a daring kid. He was very sweet kid. Yeah. So tough for those Community Members. Right now they are calling for the county to make the roads safer. They say speed has long been an issue on that stretch of road. Protesters against the war in gaza are spending a fourth night camping at stanford university. Students have set up an encampment made up of 18 tents thats set up at white plaza. Protesters tell us that stanford has handed out letters saying that if they continue to camp out, they may be suspended, but they say thats a risk theyre willing to take. Goal is sharing political education. The goal is trying to reach as many people as possible and also just showing solidarity with the people in gaza. So i think the goal is just try and stay here as long as possible, and, you know, at least until stanford tries to meet some of our demands. So today, the stanford Student Government announced students have voted in favor of the university separating itself from any company or organization, advancing military efforts in the israelhamas war, which means they will send a letter to the university demanding it to take action. Now, down south. Ucla today, Police Arrived on campus after protesters from opposing sides went at it. Several fights and confrontations broke out, despite a barrier that was meant to separate the propalestinian students from a group rallying to show support for jewish students. Now some of the jews jewish students say the campus atmosphere is so hostile theyre actually afraid. Propalestinian protesters say this is about protecting innocent civilians in gaza, thousands of people packed the plaza as the day wore on. Cal poly, humboldt is now enforcing a hard closure on campus following the week long propalestinian protest. Yesterday, the university released an email to students announcing it, saying that anyone on campus without permission would be subject to citation or arrest. As part of the enforcement, police helped place concrete barriers in certain areas to prevent vehicles from entering campus, and students will only be allowed to enter dining facilities and their dorms. No other parts of campus are open to students at this time, as calls for cease fire continue across the us. President biden and israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the phone today. The white house says the president continues to reaffirm his ironclad commitment to israels security. Two leaders last spoke on april 13th after iran launched missile and drone strikes against israel. The us opposes an invasion of gazas southernmost city, rafah, based on humanitarian grounds, the white house says. Mr. Biden reiterated that position on that call. Now. Two leaders also reviewed ongoing talks to secure the release of hostages with an immediate cease fire in gaza. The white house says part of the discussion was also about increases in the delivery of humanitarian aid into gaza. That comes as world central kitchen says it will resume humanitarian operations in gaza on monday. This follows the death of seven aid workers killed by israeli airstrikes earlier this month. World central kitchen says it has more than 200 trucks carrying enough supplies for about 8 million meals, and its ready to enter gaza through the rafah crossing and from jordan. The Aid Organization founded by chef jose andres, suspended all deliveries after the april 1st attack on an aid convoy developing in the south bay. The Santa Clara County Sheriffs Office is investigating a chase that ended in a crash. Sheriffs office says deputies in san jose tried to stop a gold lexus for speeding that was near berryessa road and north capitol avenue. The driver led deputies on a chase throughout East San Jose and it was during that chase, a deputy crashed into a toyota suv that happened near king road and commodore drive. Four people inside the car. Paramedics took them to the hospital. Deputy was hurt as well. Theyre all expected to be okay, though. The Sheriffs Office says the 24 year old driver behind the wheel of a lexus intentionally hit a patrol vehicle. Deputies used spike strips to stop his car. He did try to run away. Deputies caught up with him and arrested him in the east bay. Caltrans says southbound 680 is set to reopen on time. The agency shared this video of crews continuing repairs today. Caltrans closed part of that road friday night talking about the southbound lanes between the five 8680 interchange to koopman road in sunol. Northbound lanes are still open, but again, theyre set to reopen on time for tomorrow morning ahead of the morning commute. Remembering and honoring those who lost their lives or were hurt on the job. California marks workers memorial day today, and with it, Governor Newsom reaffirms the states commitment to making working conditions safer and healthier. Nbc bay areas Christie Smith reports. In richmond today. Workers memorial day was honored. Were having events to remember. Workers weve lost throughout, throughout the country, but specifically, were here for workers in california remembering and honoring those whove lost their lives due to work related injuries and illness. In 2022, there were apparently 504 fatalities that we know of that were as the result of going to work, and that is way too many, our goal is to get those numbers down, educate employers on how to make their workplaces safer for workers. Cal osha was joined by fed, osha and other partners today to commemorate the creation of osha on this day in 1970. We want to ensure that the workers are working in locations that are safe, that the employers provide them with safe working conditions. We asked cal osha about areas theyre leaning into. One is agriculture. They say theyve recently added offices in central california. Theres a lot of hazards related inherent in ag work, you know, one of those hazards is outdoor heat, performing work outdoors today, Governor Newsom issued a proclamation declaring it workers memorial day highlighting action to improve working conditions and wages for fast food workers, protect warehouse workers from unsafe quotas, and unfair Pay Practices impacting Garment Industry workers. Todays event at the rosie the riveter world war ii Home Front National historical park was at a location that held special significance in remembrance of the workers. The women workers in World War Two who stepped up when a lot of the men were at war, and assisting with the war effort. And so, a lot of what they did was dangerous. More events are planned for tomorrow, for workers memorial day, along with reaffirming a commitment to safety. Christy smith, nbc, bay area news. A celebration of a pandemic policy just too popular to scrap today marks four years since jfk drive turned into a car free promenade right there in golden gate park. The one and a half mile stretch of road was reserved for pedestrians and bikes during the pandemic. The goal was to give people a safe place to gather outdoors. In 2022, the city decided not to reopen the road to cars, and voters later made the change permanent. We knew that prior to the pandemic, three out of every four vehicles that used to travel down this road didnt start their trip in a park, and they didnt end it in a park, which meant that they were using this beautiful space, this incredibly valuable space to get someplace else more quickly. That is not the purpose of a park. Hundreds of people turning out for todays celebration, including mayor london breed. We are back in 90s still ahead. Warming temperatures and a warming real estate market. Just how much home prices have risen across the bay area. And this barbie is a gold medal winner. Well talk with the bay area figure skating star, whos getting her very own barbie doll , and its a blustery finish of the weekend. Wind gusts up to 44mph at sfo airport when the wind speeds come down and the temperatures climbed closer to 80 degrees hi, im greg. I live in bloomington, illinois. Im not an actor. Im just a regular person. Some people say, why should i take prevagen . I dont have a problem with my memory. Memory loss is, is not something that occurs overnight. I started noticing subtle lapses in memory. I want people to know that prevagen has worked for me. Its helped my memory. Its helped my cognitive qualities. Give it a try. I want it to help you just like it has helped me. Prevagen. At stores everywhere without a prescription. The home prices are considerably higher than a year ago. New numbers from the California Association of realtors show that last month, the median home price in the bay area nearly 1. 4 million. That is more than 15 higher than the median price this time last year. Its also a sign that prices have recovered from the dip they took in the fall of 2022, following the federal reserves Interest Rate hike. Experts say buyers are tired of waiting for those Interest Rates to come down and paying more than they wanted to. Low inventory is also playing a role. An east Bay Fire Department is going above and beyond to recruit women. The berkeley Fire Department hosted its first in fire camp event this weekend. The event is dedicated to helping women find careers in the fire service. Women who signed up got hands on training and education in firefighting, including exercises and ladder climbing, and working with a fire hose. We find that, you know, obviously the fire service is a male dominated field. We want to be able to show that anybody can do this job male, female, whatever. And we want to give an opportunity to be able to have an avenue to explore what this job is. The berkeley Fire Department hosts the event every year. Anyone with an interest in fire service is welcome to sign up well ahead of Asian American native Hawaiian Pacific islander heritage month in may. Bay area based olympian and two time World Champion figure skater Kristi Yamaguchi now has her own barbie doll. I got to talk with her about this process with mattel and what this means for future generations. It was just a huge honor and i think just exciting to, you know, it was over a year ago, so it was right before the barbie movie was coming out. And especially, you know, joining the group of women in that series, like maya angelou, anna may wong, cecilia cruz, so many heroes. Tell me about the choosing of the moment and the outfit. How did that come about . I think its just so identifiable for, the olympic golds that it made sense. And i was really excited that they were, leaning in that direction and, you know, down to the little detail, the little gold ribbon in the hair and my skates. And on representation really meant a lot that they, wanted to get an accurate, like, likeness of me. We want kids to see themselves and to be able to identify with their heroes. So so, so, yeah, i was really, really happy to see that, they wanted to embrace all of that. And and, you know, hopefully other people see that, this doll just doesnt just represent, the olympic achievement, but, you know, also, what came after the olympics. And thats really primarily been my work with always dream. Yes. And we know her always dream organization is about Early Childhood literacy and family engagement. A big passion for yamaguchi. She exciting everywhere she goes. Its a good thing. Absolutely. You know, shes doing a fantastic job. You know, long after the olympic medal victory. All right. Rob mayeda here now. And youre talking about it was just a gorgeous day today. Good day. A little windy though in a few spots on the coast. Yeah, but summerlike day actually, we had those cool onshore winds around San Francisco. Highs in the low 60s and a few mid 70s inland. In fact, if you take a look at todays highs compared to where we should be this time of year, pretty close to an average day, we should see low 60s in San Francisco right on target with that. San jose 73 in fact, slightly warmer than average temperatures for your sunday around santa rosa with that high up to 76 earlier. Still windy, though near San Francisco. Wind out of the west 28mph at chilly 60 degrees 66 right now in san rafael. Also seeing the onshore wind at 22mph, gusting up to 32 earlier today. Still hanging on to the 70s in walnut creek, this will be one location wednesday and thursday that should be close to 80 degrees for highs and into san jose 67. Northwest wind at 14mph. So the winds we have outside right now more typical of a summer like day as we go from midafternoon to early evening, those speeds pick up from 15 to 25mph and will likely find ourselves in the exact same pattern tomorrow. Wind speeds backing off a bit for the morning and then flaring up again for the afternoon. Again up to that 25 to 35 mile per hour range around the peninsula and San Francisco. Patchy low clouds right now. Well see some of that reforming into the Morning Hours and then mostly sunny skies moving forward into the afternoon. So repeat performance temperature wise as we again mostly in the low 50s around the bay area with patchy areas of low clouds, sunshine for the afternoon and then the breezes pick up once again, which will keep areas near Half Moon Bay and San Francisco fairly cool, but still low 70s around san jose, the trivalley and up around the north bay. Now as you move forward tuesday, wednesday and thursday inland temperatures, you see the pattern there changing some numbers closer to 80 degrees around walnut creek and concord by wednesday, 78 in san jose. Now thursday looks to be the warmest day of the week. Mid 80s could be in reach around areas near solano county, 81 degrees in san jose, 80 in los gatos and even San Francisco and oakland. A little less of that sea breeze for midweek into thursday should allow temperatures to briefly climb into the 70s, but the warm up really not going to last too long. As we move forward towards next weekend, theres a chance you see it right there. We could see a few showers dropping into the forecast. Not a lot there showing up on the rainfall estimates, but the big shift in temperatures from 70s and 80s. Diving into the 60s as we head towards next weekend. Keep an eye on that forecast as we head towards next saturday, especially around the north bay, i think as we head into next weekend. But before we get there, a little bit of a warming trend to look forward to after another day of blustery conditions on the coast, temperatures start to climb pretty nicely. Well see a couple of days of 80s inland and then some cooler changes into next weekend. Not looking like a washout yet, but clearly not the warmest weather of the week. As we head towards next saturday, well definitely keep an eye on next weekend, as we always do this whole year. Since the rain has been there. All right rob, thanks. Still ahead, a big honor for two oakland Basketball Teams. How the state champs are being the sunday sit down, look back range from currys victory last summer on the golf course to his new documentary on his storied career with the warriors. One of the burning questions host willie geist had for him involved his incredible shooting. Yeah. Does curry understand that . He changed the game . Do you have an appreciation for the fact that 14 year old boys take two dribbles inside half court and jack up threes, because of you . It was never like an intention of like thats what im here to do. But its just how i see the game and the irrational confidence that i have to shoot all those type of shots and what we remember from that comment was irrational confidence. Irrational confidence. We love that that he had irrational confidence when he was 14 years old right there. But if you watch him practice, you understand why. Because he practice doing that shots over and over and over again. Hes got four nba titles, two mvps considered a great shooter in nba history. He was probably the greatest shooter in whatever league he wa
