Talk continues. All of this as President Biden speaks out about the rise in antisemitism. Plus, San Francisco schools face a severe budget crisis with new signs. The money may run out entirely. A live report on the impact some fear it may have on students and teachers. Good morning, and thanks for joining us for our midday newscast. Im Ginger Conejero saab and im kris sanchez. Marcus and laura are off this midday. First we are starting the with the latest developments out of the middle east where israel is escalating its push into rafah. The Israeli Military says its forces seized control of the gaza side of the rafah Border Crossing with egypt. This closes a critical entry point for humanitarian aid. The Israeli Government says palestinians there were warned to move ahead of the strike. The escalation happened just after hamas announced that it accepted a cease fire proposal. Following weeks of back and forth talks with qatar and egypt. However, israel said the deal is far from its requirements. All this plays out on the international stage. While here in the bay area, students continue to camp out at colleges. Nbc bay areas bob redell reports from stanford university. Here at stanford university, other campuses in the bay area and throughout the country, you can see there are protesters still camped out here demanding and pushing for peace in the middle east. But its not clear if that peace is going to be coming anytime soon. Israel says that the cease fire deal that the hamas political wing accepted was, quote, far from israels demands. Israel says it is sending a delegation to work on the proposal. Cia director bill burns, also in the region, assisting with negotiations. Now the idf, thats the Israeli Military, says it conducted a, quote, very limited Counter Terrorism operation in eastern rafah. Thats the southernmost city in the gaza strip. This was after dropping leaflets in that region asking roughly 100,000 Palestinian Civilians to leave the area. However, israel says this is not the start of the large scale ground offensive that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been threatening for months. Like here at stanford, the war in gaza front and center at the San Francisco State University campus. Thats where University President lynn mahoney yesterday held direct, very public discussions with propalestinian students, some of whom set up that encampment a week ago. Now they are demanding that the school disclosed investments with companies doing business with israel, and then they want the university to divest themselves from those investments. Last night, students at the encampment were feeling that their voices are being heard. I think, honestly, were feeling pretty good. Were feeling pretty energized about what happened. I think its just great that we were able to have this dialog with our president , and now were able to, you know, go back and decide kind of how we want to move forward later today. President biden will deliver a speech during a holocaust remembrance ceremony where hell honor the 6 million jewish People Killed in the holocaust. He will also denounce antisemitism. Through a spokesperson. The president has indicated, quote, there is no place on any campus or anywhere for antisemitism. There is no place for hate speech or threats of violence against the jewish people here at stanford university. Bob redell nbc, bay area news. Thank you, bob. This morning, President Biden condemned antisemitism in the wake of those widespread protests. He made his National Address with a united front, joined by both Top Republicans and democrats at the National Holocaust memorial. The president denounced the harassment of jewish people in Public Places and on campuses, and said they are being demonized on social media. I understand people have strong beliefs and deep convictions about the world, but there is no place on any campus in america for any place in america for antisemitism or hate speech or threats of violence of any kind. The president also raised the concern of propaganda being used to downplay the suffering of jewish people, not just from atrocities committed by hamas. On october 7th, but as far back as the holocaust. In other news, the California Department of education is taking control of San Francisco Unified School District spending due to troubling budget shortfalls. Nbc bay areas tom jensen is live in San Francisco, where tom, a two person Oversight Team, now has veto power over the spending in the district. Tom thats right. And that team is expected to make a full presentation to the board at a meeting tonight here in San Francisco. The team determined that the district is in distressed Financial Condition and could run out of money by the 2024 2025 fiscal year. San francisco Public School enrollment has dropped by about 10,000 students over the past decade in the district has lost tens of millions of dollars in annual state and federal Education Funding because of it. Its forced the state to call for a corrective plan to be put in place by the end of next month, and for that Oversight Team to take control of the spending for the time being. In the meantime, the School District is trying to identify schools for closure, to help save money and to vote on the selecting campuses for closure. Could happen in december. And we talked to one local parent who said shes not surprised that it came to this. I have twin boys that are almost 16, and we tried for sfusd for until they were about in third grade and after that when i had to buy their own paper and just constant printer cartridges. I mean, the cuts were just everywhere and, i couldnt keep them in sf, usd anymore. In a press statement friday, district superintendent doctor matt wayne acknowledged improvements are needed and also said we are committed to accelerating our efforts to address the remaining concerns to ensure that San Francisco Public Schools are places where students can learn, grow and thrive. We should hear a lot more in a Public Comment period during that meeting tonight with the San Francisco Unified School District board, where that Oversight Team will speak. But also, we should hear a lot more from teachers and parents during that Public Comment period tonight. A lot to look forward to. Were live in San Francisco. Tom jensen, nbc bay area news. A San Francisco police are trying to find the man who terrorized and insulted a bus full of Lowell High School students and other passengers, muni gave video of the incident to sfpd, but have not released it publicly just yet. However, we are told that the video shows a man yelling racist antiasian slurs before before taking out some sort of stun gun. The man never used that device, but the mother of one of the students on board says her son is traumatized by what happened and accuses the city of not doing enough to address growing hate crimes in the city. He has to take Public Transportation every day, as so do a lot of young kids, and theres been a lot of asian hate in our city, but not a lot of, you know, responsive, accountable city. How . Mayor matt mahan says the citys revenue is short about 5 million, but the city also needs to clear homeless encampments along the waterways in order to be compliant with the clean water act. He says that puts the deficit closer to 52 million. This morning i sat down with the mayor, who hopes the budget can be managed without layoffs or cutting core services, though he says next year might be a different story. Unfortunately, this year i think well just narrowly be able to avoid layoffs. I am more worried about next year. We just cant have our labor costs outgrow our revenue growth. Were not the federal government. Were not allowed to just print money. We have to balance our budget every single year. A man also spoke on efforts to prevent crime. He says later this year, there will be more foot patrols by police and the return of bike patrols in downtown san jose to help boost safety. Meteorologist kari hall joins us now with a look at this lingering impact. Yeah, so theres been a major tornado outbreak. And there was one at least confirmed person who was dead after a tornado touched down in oklahoma. And lets show you the video of the damage that was left behind in barnsdall, in the northern part of the state. Several homes have been destroyed and piles of the debris as you can see on the screen there can be seen for miles. And there were also reports of downed power lines and trees. Look at that truck. There just smashed under all of that debris. Now lets take a look at some video from holiday inn, a hotel that suffered extensive damage after that storm blew into bartlesville. Meanwhile, San Francisco firefighters could soon be getting a pricey wardrobe upgrade to the tune of 12 million, so they are concerned about certain types of chemicals that are used in the manufacturing of their current clothing, which they say could be making firefighters sick, maybe even causing cancer. Senior Investigative Reporter bigad shaban is in San Francisco to explain how the city now plans to protect our first responders. Good morning. Later today, lawmakers here in San Francisco are poised to vote on a first in the nation ban on certain types of protective equipment for firefighters. It would essentially require the city to purchase brand new uniforms for the departments firefighters by 2026. Now, this all stems from concern that the current gear, known as turnouts, are actually manufactured with chemicals proven to cause cancer. So the question is why arent other alternatives more widely available, and could the fix actually create more hazards for firefighters .
