Planes. Vic lee has details from oakland international, in the story youll see only on abc 7 news. There are new signs now posted on doors in the terminals, leading to secured areas of the airport, signs that were not here when abc 7 news shot our story in early july. The signs say there are new restrictions on what airport workers can carry into the secured areas. They are now limited to two small items, like a purse or computer bag. Reporter airport officials also say they have increased random screenings of workers who go into the restricted areas and into planes. And background checks are more thorough. All of this as a result of the breeches here, three of them in the past four months. Keith mayfield seen here leaving court and two other baggage handlers were arrested in may and charged with smuggling drugs. Abc 7 news discovered two other cases from federal Court Documents involving Oakland Airport workers. Then in may, another drug smuggling arrest here onto a plane. This one a ramp agent from alaska airlines. Unlike passengers, Oakland Airport workers do not pass through metal detect ors when they go into secured areas. They can enter through employee doors like these with their security clearances. When i see what happened at oakland, certainly i do worry about the threat of an inside job. We need to look at 100 screening of people who have access to the planes. Reporter Oakland Airport Officials Say there are other security measures they cant talk about but full screening currently is not one theyre ing. Reporter a Council Committee today directed the city manager to work on a design and a budget. The projected cost is 180,000. The mayor has contributed 75,000 from his own budget. San jose has two downtown memorials for veterans.
