And reporter vic lee has more now acting mayor made the official announcement late this morning. But those here already knew. This after breed held meetings with the mayors staff and Department Heads before her news conference. Their tributes had a common thread, common words to describe what most called a kind, gentle man. Im drawn to the kind of leader thats nice. Ed lee was nice. He was a mayor who led with compassion, who was an incredibly kind person. Ed lee always had an open door for any of us. We can call him at any time. Mayor lee came from humble beginnings. He grew up in public housing. His father a veteran, mother a seamstress. He never forgot his roots. Stood up for immigrants, stood up for people. Never forgot who he was or where he came from. He was quiet, laid back, low key. Knew what he needed to do. Get the job done. His priorities, mourners said, were housing, homelessness, jobs and minimum wage. Lee had Many Political battles in his three decades of public service. Opponents may have disagreed with him on policy, but everyone agrees that our mayor was a good man with a good heart. With the flags here at city hall at halfstaff, thats where they will be for the next 30 days. Now, i go back on a personal note with mayor ed lee. During the days he was an activist with the asian law caucus. He was a civil rights lawyer, he campaigned for a lot of things that he believed were good. He then spent three decades here at city hall, ultimately as mayor. I believe that he thought he could change things from inside, from within the system. And thats what a lot of people said to us today. People we interviewed here that he did just that. Vic lee, abc 7 news. By so many. Ed lees sudden death was a shock to his fellow mayors in the bay area. Many remembered his kindness which extended beyond professional courtesy. In this rough and tumble world of politics, he truly was a beacon of generosity and of decency of compassion. It is a loss for each one of us personally o who held ed in our hearts as a true friend. His first questions to me were how can i help you . How can we Work Together for the betterment of the region. San francisco will miss ed lee, but i think well all miss ed lee. A House Minority leader, nancy pelosi, welled up with emotion as she spoke with ed lees passing today in washington. This is a terrible loss, personally for me its a great loss. He was my dear friend and a person who, again, always was thinking of the little guy. Pelosi says mayor lee never had an unkind word to say about anyone, calling him a person of great values. This is the front page of tomorrow mornings San Francisco chronicle focusing on the big changes the city has undergone during lees tenure as mayor. Board of supervisors president , london breed will serve as acting mayor for the time being as detailed by the charter. The supervisors have the power to exercise it to vote in another person to serve as acting mayor or more likely the board could let her serve as mayor until june elections. There is not a timeline. For that entire period of time, should they choose not to take any action, mayor breed will be both the acting mayor and the president of the board of supervisors. The special election will take place june 59 of next year to determine who serves at the remainder of the term. That term expires in january of 2020. Lets move on now. Roy moore still has not conceded the race and suggests that a recall could be in the works. President trump september out a tweet saying congratulations to doug jones in a hard fought victory. The writein votes played a very big factor but a win is a win. The people of alabama are great and the republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends.
