Two of the victims were laid to rest today. Seven are still in the hospital. The president said he visited with some of them. He has not announced plans to visit parkland where the shooting took place. The fbi admitted it made a major mistakes. Lets begin with maggie rulli in parkland. The fbi stays a person close to nikolas cruz contacted the fbis tip line with specific concerns about husband gun ownership, erratic behavior, and his desire to kill people. The fbi had been alerted in september by a video blogger concerned that nikolas cruz left a troubling comment. Jeff sessions ordered a review. A local lawmaker is reintroducing a proposal to modify a law called the gun violent restraining order. Currently only family members and Law Enforcement can request it. It prohibits a person from owning a gun or ammunition. The proposal from the assembly man would add high school choorn and School Employees to those who could request it. This tool could have been used in florida. There were so many signs this individual was dangerous. Law enforcement saw signs. Teachers saw signs. These are exactly the people that could can uses the tool. And in the future i would hope could use the tool. A similar measure was proposed in 2016, but was vetoed by the govern jerry brown. California already has some of the toughest gun laws in the nation. Its illegal to buy or possess militarystyle assault rifles like the ar15. The same goes for magazines that hold more than ten bullets. Also, gun magazines cannot have whats called a bullet button that allows a person to with quickly reload the weapon. Supporters of tougher gun laws say it is time for lawmakers to do more. Others question whether the laws work. The rhett of the world doesnt do this. Seeing the news this week its like enough is enough. I see californias laws focusing on lawful gun owners and making it harder for lawful gun owners to obtain a firearm. As for the gun violence restraining order we mentioned california is one of the only states in the california with that kind of law on the books. Local schools are launching Training Programs to deal with active shooters on campus. In oakland they took a new approach to dealing with the reality of guns at schools. Reporter 35 oakland administrators and teachers hunkered down for a reality check today with a Disaster Preparedness consultant. In 2018 you have got to go home and have a conversation with your 3yearold that goes like this, if you are in school trying to learn and somebody comes in to try to kill you this is what you need to do. Its sad we have to have the discussion but it needs to be done. Reporter the discussion wasnt about gun control. It was more immediate. What if a gunman shows up tomorrow, or next week, intent on killing. The idea is maybe we cannot stop active shooters armed with semiautomatic weapons from coming on to a school campus. What we can do is keep classroom doors locked every day. And better trained personnel. We know statistically that only very few people have ever been able to breach a locked door and hurt people. Reporter solomon says more practice is needed with lock down barricade drills. That means having drills at vulnerable moments like on play grounds and during drop off and pick up times. And Train School Staff to administer first aid for gun shot wounds. If you have a major arterial bleed that staff knows how to stop bleeding. The Fire Department cant come in until the scene is safe. We have to be able to take care of our children. Reporter the goal is saving lives. It was a sobering moment for staff here. It falls on my team to provide a plan of safety that every Single Person on that campus is safe. We cant sweep it under a rug. We cant send it somewhere else. We have got to face it. Thats one minute for every person killed in the florida attack. The organizers want to see students, teachers, staff, and parents taking part to send a message that Congress Needs to take action on gun violence. Students at a Central Valley school spread messages of kindness today with phrases like smile 24 7, shine brightly, and be positive. This project at tanaya middle school in fresno has been in the works for a while but it could not have come at a better time. May have reservations or concerns about whether their child is safe at school.
