Earlier 20 cars and two large trucks caught fire on the freeway. So take a look at those two largest fires. Theres a semi truck there bursting into flames. A car carrier next door also on fire. Firefighters did their best to hose down the truck and you can see them spraying the cab there. They are trying to keep neighboring cars from catching fire. This all started with a grass fire that is now 3500 acres. Thats nearly double less than an hour ago. The flames jumped that freeway, overtook two stretches of i15 or the 15 as they call it in the south, helicopters are also dropping water from the air. I dont know which one he is going to try to hit but he has that bambi bucket hanging down below. He is facing downhill into the wind and sliding sideways and he is going to do a pinpoint drop right into that fire. So he is fighting turbulence from the ground, turbulence from the fire, and there he goes,. Drops it right down the middle of that fire. Reporter about 80 people had abandoned their vehicles although initially they were being told by officials to stay in their cars. Some of those vehicles left behind went up in flames. Also that boat on a trailer. Heavy winds and dry conditions continue to fuel the flames that fire still heading towards some nearby rural communities. According to the dmv, eightcar makers or Tech Companies are currently testing 77 Driverless Cars on california roads. The expert says in time he believes the tests will demonstrate that the real danger is not Driverless Technology but distracted drivers themselves. Reporter yeah, ken. This week, the Police Captain here started cracking down on lawbreaking bicyclists. Now the cyclists are fighting back saying you picked on the wrong group of people. Police say a lot of neighbors in the panhandle area complain about bicyclists blowing past stop signs and running red lights. In the five minutes at this intersection, not a single bike stopped. They are no different than a vehicle and they are considered a motor vehicle. Reporter so the park station captain made law breaking cyclists his top enforcement priority. His officers this week will give violators warnings, soon they will be handling out tickets. But many bicyclists believe they are being unfairly targeted. Having a blanket war on all cyclists doesnt seem to, you know, be productive. Reporter this bicyclist says an officer recently cited him for not putting a foot down at a traffic light. He and other cyclists say law breaking drivers are the real problem. And cracking down an bicyclists only diverts resources away from the real issue. For them to go after us its absurd. Reporter it was supposed to be a glimpse at their future but a trip to Humboldt State last year instead ended the life of 10 people including five Southern California high schoolers. A fedex truck driver veered from his lane and hit the motor coach head on causing both to be engulfed in flames. As a result the ntsb this week issued recommendations to keep passengers of charter buses safe. Present regulations require none of these safety presents for motor coach passengers. Reporter within just days state senator ricardo lora has introduced sweeping recommendations as proposed law. His Spokesman Says the for is passionate about making buses and others on the road safer including giving passengers a safety briefing just like on air planes. There are reports that the students didnt actually get werent told where the exits were and so if you think about when an accident happens within split seconds you need to know where youre going to head. Thats a matter of life and death. Reporter the proposed law would increase exit signage. Exits would have to stay open on their own and each bus would have a black box recorder like a plane. We have three, four, five bus accidents a day in this country. Reporter attorney Robert Buccola has represented many victims of charter bus crashes. He says there seems to be no consistency when it comes to safety. We may have a driver thats not been trained and had to deal with emergency response. You may have a bus thats antiquated with Flammable Materials on board. You may have a bus that has a very poor exit system. We need to get some consistency in the industry. Right now, the law would only apply to charter buses not major bus lines like greyhound. More than half of new drivers licenses issued in california this year have gone to people in the countr illegally. The state law allows them to get licenses. So far they have issued 400,000 licenses to illegals. Critics say those in the country illegally should not be rewarded. Supporters say license and insured drivers make everyone safer. Who would have expected this kind of complexity . Reporter right next to the mountain ranges revealed in wednesdays batch of data is a smoother landscape, scientists using a mosaic to show the different surfaces side by side. Theres extensive large scale pitting. You can see in the lower right. And then theres this extremely young plains. The landscape is just astoundingly amazing. Reporter the images have been trickling in since tuesday when nearly a decade into its journey, the new horizons spacecraft swept within 7700 miles of the pluto system. The nasa team also created an animation of a flyover as pluto would look from 25 miles above the surface. These mountains soar as high above their local terrain as, um, many of the mountains in the Rocky Mountains do here in the united states. Reporter since capturing these images, new horizons has left pluto in the rear view mirror already two million miles deeper into space.
