They had to be rescued. The fire is burning on the south side of Lake Berryessa near the boat dock. I believe we have someone on the phone with us who can give us some more information . Yes. Hello. My name is Susie Blankenship with cal fire. Hi. This is the allen martin. What can you tell us . I have it at 700 acres. Yes. I can confirm that the wildland fire is currently at 700 acres with zero percent containment. And this got started about 2 00, it was a vehicle fire that started this . It was a vehicle fire. I dont have information on how the vehicle sparked the wildland fire. But it was a vehicle accident. What can you tell me about evacuations in the area . Evacuations are in the mix canyon area for homeowners. And as you spoke of the campers in the canyon screen campground, they have been evacuated. I would assume here we are in the middle of summer those campgrounds have to be pretty packed. Well, i dont have the number of evacuations but i do know that that campground has been evacuated. So zero percent containnent, susie and so the firefight is happening on the ground and from the air . Right. Currently the firing is traveling quickly and the fuels are brush and the terrain is steep and rugged so the firefighters have a challenge but they are actively working aggressively on that fire. And you have some winds to battle there, too, right . Correct. The winds are about 5 to 10 Miles Per Hour with gusts every so often but the winds have been very erratic which is also a challenge for firefighters. Were showing a great picture of a helicopter planning a water drop. But susie, again, here we are, the fourth year of the drought and that fuel there has to be so dry and ready to burn. Well, it is dry. And its burning. And at zero percent containment, i guess theres no way to tell exactly when you might be able to get this surrounded . Well, all i can tell you is fire crews and the air resources are working on the perimeter control and trying to, um, work on sides for containment but with the winds the way they are, they are out there just actively doing what they can to create their lines. So we have a lot we have about 300 firefighters currently working this fire. Do you expect more evacuations . I know there are not a lot of homes up in the area but there are some. The evacuations will be mandatory if the fire travels into areas that will threaten public safety. All right. Susie blankenship are cal fire, i appreciate it so much. This is the called the wragg fire because it got started along highway 128 near wragg canyon road. There was a vehicle crash that started this fire about 2 00 this afternoon. And a lot of it burning in the steep canyons near Lake Berryessa. Lets take a look at some cell phone video. It got going at 2 00 but in the last hour it has really, really taken off in solano and also moving into yolo counties. Napa county. This view from mount vaca, this is from our camera on top of the tower there. Evacuations have started. No injuries. They have air tankers and helicopters, crews on the ground. Paul deanno has more on the wind. Its going to be a problem. Its breezy throughout the bay area the area no exception. Sustained wins in napa 16 Miles Per Hour. At the Travis Air Force base, a 28mileperhour sustained wind. So when you have zero percent containment on a fire, you have rugged terrain and you have winds that are gusting between 16 and 30 Miles Per Hour, that adds up to a big problem. The one area of concern because the fire is blowing from the west to the east away from the lake is its heading towards winters. Its not an immediate problem but with the persistent onshore flow its not going to go calm tonight. It will be breezy tonight. It will be another windy day tomorrow. If we can go back to the mount vaca cam, its the low level winds gusting to 30 miles an hour. Look at all that fire right there. But look at the vertical build. Higher than 2,000 feet its not that windy and the smoke is going up rather than east. This is a large fire getting bigger. Its always dry in the month of july so here we are in the middle of a drought with the fire with pretty strong winds. So guys, were talking about a situation that likely will get worse before it gets better. Zero percent containment. A windy evening in napa county and a fire thats only getting bigger. These are live pictures from chopper 5 of the fire that is burning just to the south of Lake Berryessa. Cal fire confirming 700 acres burned. Right now the fire is moving in an easterly direction. There are some evacuations already. And there will be more if this fire starts to creep into area where there are homes and there are homes to the east. Obviously we are keeping an eye on this one and well monitor it throughout the evening. Our other big story tonight an east Bay Police Officer shot to death in the line of duty. The biggest state in the union to do it. The injured to take the pot from the pot clubs and merge it with the Liquor Stores get it on recreational level but like i said, this is a big state. And theres more problems to it than any of the others. Lets take a look. Whoo reporter if california does clues to legalize marijuana for fun and profit a new Blue Ribbon Task force report says we better be careful. He would dont want to create a new gold rush for california. We dont want big tobacco coming in and becoming big marijuana. We want to protect our children. If people want to promote that, im not going to be supportive of an initiative that does those things. Im a parents. Im worried about the message this sends to our kids. Reporter what he and others want, however, to get the states 12 billion a year pot business out of the hands of the criminal cartels. License it, regulate the strength and make it only available to people 21 and older something people say is wishful thinking. We have seen that marijuana use goes up exponentially once its allowed for adult recreational use. We saw that in alaska. We saw that in other states. Reporter newsom concedes that none of this is going to be easy. Well expect for many, many years that the illicit market and cartels will continue to operate. They are not going to participate overnight because we legalize. Youre always going to get it cheaper around the corner the alley. Reporter and another concern. Theres no way to test impairment for driving. Reporter what about people driving under the influence . Its a problem today people driving under the influence of drugs, a huge problem today. Reporter whatever the case, newsom concedes that even if legalizing pot passes, some of these questions could take years to work out.
