A guilty verdict for a man who shot and killed a Vallejo Police officer. Jim capoot was killed in 2011 chasing suspected bank robber henry smith in north vallejo. Smith bailed from his car and capoot ran after him and smith opened fire shooting the officer three times. Smith was found guilty of first degree murder. He is being held in Solano County jail. Developing news, Northern California firefighters are battling two major brush fires right now. The wragg fire is burning for a third day in napa and yolo counties. The kyburz fire started yesterday in the El Dorado National forest. Crews are finally getting a handle on the wragg fire burning on the Southeast Side of lake berm. Firefighters have kept the flames at 6900 acres on the Southeast Side of lake berryessa. That fire is now 20 contained, no growth since yesterday. 1500 people are fighting the flames and highway 128 reopened allowing some evacuees to return home. Da lin is live with why they were forced to shut down the highway again just two hours later. Da. Reporter thats right. The fire is now burning in remote areas away from the homes. Thats the good news. So firefighters allowed some evacuees to return home this afternoon. And some folks are returning to situations like this. Take a look. Flames burned up to the foundation. We are told a dozen firefighters on wednesday night actually surrounded this house and stopped the flames from burning it down. The resident is thankful for the efforts. Cal fire says thanks to todays calm weather conditions, the fire is not growing. Theres still a lot of hot spots within the perimeter that are burning. Thats why the choppers continue to make water drops. Now, those who were allowed home today say its good to see the houses still standing. No. I wasnt expecting the house to be here at all. But here it is. Its still standing. You see the house still intact. Im indebted to cal fire. Reporter liz, as you mentioned, the firefighters reopened highway 128 at noon so People Living near it could return. Highway 128 is a main road around here. But a couple of hours later around 2 00 they had to shut down the eastbound direction due to a rockslide. We dont know when they plan to reopen the eastbound. Right now, the community of quail ridge is still under the mandatory evacuation order. Thats about 150 homes. And we are told that firefighters will continue to evaluate the situation. They are going to give people an update around 6 00. Live outside of winters, im da lin, kpix 5. Crews have made some progress in getting containment around that kyburz fire. They are hoping to reopen highway 50 in El Dorado County sometime tonight. Its been closed since the flames broke out on either side of that highway yesterday. Its burning west of the town of kyburz. Cbs Kristin Marshall reports from the front lines. Reporter very active scene out here today from the sky to the ground as well as the smoke filled air. The 10 00 update from fire crews saying that the fire doubled in size to 200 acres overnight with a 30 containment. Firefighters say they did make progress on both sides of the highway and on the south side of the american river. Crews were able to tie in lines on the north side of the fire and will continue reinforcing those today as well as structural support to 75 residents. South side had a little trouble for them with dead trees causing a short range spot fire. Mandatory and voluntary evacuations in place. Reporter its only breezy today compared to the last couple of days. The winds have relaxed a bit down to 10 to 20 Miles Per Hour as opposed to up to 35 Miles Per Hour that we had when the fire started two days ago and also yesterday afternoon. Take a look at our weather computer and you will see the winds in fairfield and napa running between 10 and 20 Miles Per Hour. Thats very common for this time of year. You have hot air to the east. You have the marine breeze coming into the west. And right in between we find napa county and Solano County where the wind whips up in the afternoons but thats manageable. Its not the stuff we saw the past couple afternoons. Now lets look forward. Overnight tonight the winds will relax. Gust 10 to 15 Miles Per Hour out of the west. Saturday with an area of low pressure to the north the winds will increase slightly. Well likely see some gusts in excess of 20 Miles Per Hour perhaps as strong as 25 Miles Per Hour with relative humidity between 30 and 40 Miles Per Hour. Tonight the suspect in the Movie Theater rampage in louisiana is being described as a drifter with a history of Mental Health issues. The 59yearold John Russel Houser is accused of shooting 11 people last night in a screening of the amy schumer comedy trainwreck. Two women were killed. Howser then killed himself. Cell phone video shows the chaotic aftermath outside the lafayette theater. At least one of the injured is in critical condition. Veronica de la cruz has more. Reporter investigators say he arrived there this month from alabama with a history of Domestic Violence and was involuntarily committed to a Mental Institution in 2008. At one point his exwife removed all guns from the home because she was worried about his mental state. Investigators spent hours combing through the Movie Theater in lafayette where a man opened fire last night. This witness sat several seats down from the shooter. That we look over to the left see where the sound is coming from and its the shooter just standing up just shooting at the whole crowd. He just looked like a common guy, anyone off the street. Reporter police found 13 shell casings in the theater. The bullets hit and killed two women, 21yearold macyi breaux and 33yearold jillian johnson. Breaux was about to begin Radiology School at the same hospital that treated some of the victims. Just two weeks ago toured the facility and met our staff and so this really hurts. Reporter Court Documents show howsers family said he was mentally ill and that he had threatened them. Some of his online posts reveal a man with antifeminist and antiliberal views. We believe in talking to the family and talking to friends and trying to look at his writings on the internet and putting some parts and pieces together maybe we can try to figure out what caused him to do it. Reporter four on Duty Police Officers were inside the theater within 60 seconds of the shooting. Howser spotted police on his way out as he tried to escape. We were able to access the Jeep Cherokee over its 3g connection. Reporter the socalled ethical hackers were miles away, yet the wired video shows them disabling the jeeps brakes leaving it to slide into a ditch. The hackers originally estimated as many as 471,000 vehicles could be vulnerable a drop in the bucket compared to what chrysler admitted today. Acknowledging the vulnerability it recalled at least 1. 4 million vehicles including dodge, ram, chrysler and jeep. And we discovered the 13 recalled models have a history of other problems. Public records reveal at least 62 unrelated recalls and 149 Service Bulletins in july the past three years. In response to the hacking weakness the automaker says it has released a Software Update that offers customers improved Vehicle Electronics security. Chrysler says it will mail owners a usb drive with a Software Update and has already taken some security measures of its own.
