One mile north of the piedmont, at the center was along the hayward fault. The quake registered on our seismograph here at kpix 5, people reported feeling it across the east bay in San Francisco, we did. More rain county and on parts of the peninsula as well. We have live team coverage. Kiet do is live at the usgs in menlo park, cate cauguiran is the pep center in piedmont epicenter in piedmont. Reporter that exact location right next to me. Everyone is sleeping in the homes in this area got an early wake up call. Having is across the street was pretty shocking. Reporter kurt made sure to set an alarm to wake up. Reporter the quake was felt all over the bay area. The Security Camera caught these guys enjoying their sleep when the first shock came, and then the next. In this video, you see a startled bane after a quake shook the room. Is that an earthquake i just felt. I dont think so. I think it was. Reporter in San Francisco, radio host fernando and greg were mid broadcast when they felt the quake. What do you do, i grew up in texas. Reporter in berkeley. I was shaking, like wobbly. Reporter most people shelter under tables, these guys decided to get in their car. We decided just to check the place out. Reporter looking around, there was no visible damage. We checked with several markets and it was the same story with the exception of a safeway in montclair, the only casualty was a bottle of wine. After the quake hit, b. A. R. T. It was an earthquake. Definitely an earthquake, and were going to work with our producers to try to figure out how strong that earthquake was. A little bit of a jolt here, two jolts actually. First one caught me by surprise. I have been in the studio when we had an earthquake in 2011, and the entire desk shakes a little bit. You felt it as well. I certainly did. I cant wait to explain this to my mom and alabama that i was standing here while an earthquake was happening. And really the desk did shake quite a bit. Oh, it d and you can feel it just like that. We both kind of looked and melissa was in the middle of her piece, and she paused and looked at each other, collect your thoughts like many folks out there. Not just our Radio Partners here at the cbs broadcast studios, they felt the jolt. And heres how it played out on allisons morning show feel that . Oh, wow s that an earthquake. Oh, geez,. Yeah, we felt it. That was a big one. Get us some information on that. 6 49 00 a. M. Where we are, that was a 4, 3 . Yeah, well, it was a 4. Nice work by sarah there who nailed the magnitude right out of the gate. The reason so many people felt it is because the quake was centered along the hayward fault. Thats the one that runs the length of the east bay. Kpix5 reporter kiet do is live in menlo park at the usgs with more on the Science Behind the quake. This was a pretty typical earthquake. They have counted about a half dozen of these of the same magnitude on the hayward fault since 1984. The agency says this is a great time to talk about preparing for the big one. The usgs says it was a classic textbook quake that happens once every couple of years. Three miles below the surface, it was shallow. That means people nearby probably felt more intense shaking than they normally would. The last one happened in 1868. The agency says a big one comes around once every 150 years or so. Add 10 if 1868, it wouldnt surprise those of us who know about this, if we had a big earthquake sometime in the near future. Reporter scientists will be using data to refine instruments. Our future shaking that goes into the National Seismic hazard map which are used by the building code. Reporter the earthquake hit at the end of the morning newscast, and neither frank, maria nor melissa ducked under the desk. Shame on them, right. They were playing the odds, you know, small jolt, is it over or is that the beginning. You never know.
