KPIX KPIX 5 News At 600PM December 1, 2017

Three years for being a felon in possession of a firearm, but time served will count against that sentence. Public defender Matt Gonzalez who zarate hugged after the verdict was read had this to say about the political firestorm ignited and fueled by this case including taking a shot at the white house. For those who might criticize this verdict, there are a number of people that have commented on this case in the last couple years, the attorney general of the united states, the president and Vice President of the united states. Let me just remind them that they are themselves under investigation by a special prosecutor in washington d. C. And they may themselves soon avail themselves of the presumption of innocence and beyond a reasonable doubt standard and so i would ask them to reflect on that before they comment or disparage the results in this case. Reporter now we have learned there is a federal warrant out for mr. Zarate who is an illegal immigrant from mexico. We believe at this point it was issued by the federal marshals office. Just a short time ago the steinle family told the San Francisco chronicle that they are sanded and they are shocked, that just saddened and they are shocked, that justice was rendered in this case, but it was not served. Andria borba, kpix5. We have the first comment on the verdict from the Trump Administration. Attorney general Jeff Sessions issued this statement. When jurisdictions used to return criminal aliens to the streets rather then turning them over to federal immigration authorities, they put Public Safety at risk. I urge the leaders of the nations communities to reflect on the outcome of this case and consider carefully the harm they are doing to their citizens by refusing to cooperate with federal Law Enforcement officers. Kpix5 Political Insider phil matier joining us now. Phil, youve been around the city a long time. Your reaction . Id have to say its a San Francisco jury and i think thats one of the reasons why the defense team decided to keep it in San Francisco despite all the pretrial publicity. Lets take a listen to what public defender jeff adachi had to say about it. Although this case was a terrible tragedy, our greatest fear is that mr. Garciazarate would not be able to get fair trial and today the jurors demonstrated that, that regardless of the, again, the tremendous amount of negative publicity in this case before the facts were even known, before the evidence of the ricochet even came out that he was able to get a fair trial. Were now that trial was in a court of law and now we go back to the court of Public Opinion where this verdict is already playing nationally. We have the attorney general weighing in, warning or issuing statements about sanctuary cities and it comes at a time also when signatures are out there being collected for a possible Ballot Initiative to roll back the state legislatures and the governors decision to declare california a sanctuary state. So this is going to play into that debate as well. Now its political and what about the mayor of San Francisco . Is he weighing . So far we called him and his reply is a rather terse no comment and in part thats because it is the city sanctuary city that is on trial as well. The San Francisco sanctuary city policy was one of the first and one of the leaders in this and after kate steinle it was redone, but it was not made any tougher in terms of handing people over to immigration. If anything, it was reinforced to say that San Francisco is standing as a sanctuary city and once again were waiting for the verdict from that as far as the Public Opinion goes. Absolutely. All right, phil, thank you. We are tracking more reaction to the steinle verdict. Coming up at 6 30 a legal analysis of where the prosecution may have lost its case. A dramatic change in tone from House Minority leader nancy pelosi, four days ago she called john conyers an icon. Today she said the fellow democrat should resign over Sexual Harassment allegations. Kpix5 political reporter melissa caen has more on pelosis about face. Congressman john conyers has represented detroit in the house of representatives since 1965, but recently we learned a former staffer received a settlement after claiming he sexually harassed her and today we heard from that woman for the first time and now even pelosied hes got to go. I pelosi said hes got to go. I pray for congressman conyers and his family. I wish him well. However, hes got to go. Reporter a leading member of the Democratic Party calling on conyers to step down. Pelosi a few days ago called congressman conyers an icon. He will do the right thing in terms of what he knows about his situation, that hes entitled to due process, but women are entitled to due process as well. Reporter but a lot can change in four days. Early this morning a former conyers staffer who was paid some 27,000 to settle her harassment claims broke her silence on the today show. She described one specific encounter with conyers in 2005. He invited me into the hotel and he has undressed, you know, down to his underwear. He asked me to satisfy him sexually. He pointed to areas of genital areas of his body and asked me to, you know, touch it. Reporter and she says she was asked to recruit others. He asked me to find other people that would satisfy him. So i just tried to escape. Reporter within hours of the today show airing pelosi was calling for conyers to resign. The allegations against congressman conyers as we have learned more since sunday are serious, disappointing and very credible. Its very sad. Reporter conyers has stepped down from the judiciary committee, but today his lawyer said he has no intention of leaving office and he questioned why pelosi has not called for al franken to resign. At the end of the day i would suspect that nancy pelosi is going to have to explain what is the discernible difference between al franken and john conyers. Reporter willie brown was the speaker of the California Assembly for 15 years and he says that theres an obvious difference. One is a u. S. Senator and one is a member of the house of representatives. Period. Im guessing that nancy pelosi as the leader on the democrats in congress is focused on appropriately dealing with her membership rather than invading Chuck Schumers responsibilities in the senate and i suspect that she would be equally as fiercely committed to barring schumer from doing anything about any of her members. Me forward with similar stories now marion brown is not the only person to accuse conyers. Another former staffer has come forward with similar stories of harassment and a third says that conyers was verbally abusive. Conyers has been in the hospital since yesterday when he sought help for stress. Committee publically confirmed today it has opened to senator melissa caen, kpix5. In the meantime the Senate Ethics committee publicly confirmed today it has opened a preliminary inquiry into senator al frankens behavior. Six women have now accused the democratic senator of sexual misconduct. Franken has said he would cooperate fully with an ethics probably but has no plans to resign. Not only do we create opportunities for our local residents to be potentially be hired by amazon right upstairs, but also throughout the entire bay area region. Reporter he says its investment like that both in people and in a hot Real Estate Market that have helped turn East Palo Alto around and mayor moody should know. He was here in 1992 when his city was known as the murder capital of the usa. It was a tough time. I mean we were a small community, a little under probably about 28,000 people, but we had 43 homicides all within that one year. Reporter and now . And now we have zero. Reporter moody credits the Police Departments increase in sworn officers to 48, modernization and technology for the drop in violent crime, plus there are now more jobs than ever in East Palo Alto with home depot, ikea, a newly opened target and amazon which added 1,200 new jobs. I seen the ad in the paper. Reporter reggie page is a lifelong East Palo Alto resident. He now works as a Maintenance Man at the amazon building. We had no. 1 murder capital and now you can see we have fortune 500 companies thats here. Reporter but there has been a cost. Traffic congestion is up and so are the rents and the housing prices. Its good because its safer now, but its kind of harsh because a lot of people cant afford it. Reporter jesus silva was born and raised in East Palo Alto. He now pails 3,200 in rent for this home off university avenue. As a construction worker, hes afraid he might be priced out of his own hometown eventually. A lot of people coming out. Facebook has come over here and its a lot of people just buying houses, buying them and theyre renting them and they know that they can rent them for higher. So i feel like yes, they are kind of running us out. Reporter city Officials Say that they had to solve the crime problem first before they could move on to other issues like gentrification. East palo alto said they are trying to add as many low income or very low Income Housing units as possible. In fact, they say right now about 40 of the citys Housing Stock qualifies as low income. Reporting live in East Palo Alto, len ramirez, kpix5. The future of the Oakland Coliseum complex is up in the air with all three of its pro teams planning to leave. The warriors will move across the bay into a new arena in San Francisco in 2019. The following year the raiders intend to relocate to las vegas.
