KPIX KPIX 5 News At 600PM January 9, 2018

What will move through this evening. For the next six hours theres no reason to think this rain will let up. Weve hit 3 inches of rain in kentfield, nearly 3 inches of rainfall in the santa cruz, coming up on 2 inches of rain in San Francisco, dublin 1 1 2 inches, hayward more than 1 inch and almost 1 inch of rain in san jose. Today in San Francisco, the second wettest day of the past five years eclipsing a big storm we got last february. Because of the rain and the fact that after a burn, after a fire, the soil in the mountains cannot absorb the water like it normally does. Thats why well be watching the burn zones in the north bay, all those wine country wildfires. Well watch it all winter long. Theyve already had 2 inches of rainfall. A Flash Flood Watch is in effect for those areas until tomorrow morning. Well talk about when the rain ends and what to expect after the storm is gone coming up in a few minutes. We appreciate that, paul. The Flash Flood Watch in santa rosa is causing concern for areas burned in october wildfires. All this rain could easily wash away hillsides. Kpix5s Juliette Goodrich is live in santa rosa in the Fountain Grove neighborhood. Reporter veronica, yes, we are in one of the burn zones tonight. Its been raining steadily all day coming down this evening in the santa rosa area and the concern as paul was mentioning is that unstable ground weve been Walking Around in all day today. You can see our fogged up lens from all the rain today, but that unstable ground could lead to mudslides. Of santa rosa has o alert residents and ta it was three months ago when fire swept through ward pages santa rosa home, a home of 17 years. Now this first big rainstorm and mother natures force delivers yet another dark cloud. Today he was covering valuables with tarps to preserve what he has. It was just burning constantly. Reporter this santa rosa couples home was spared in the fire, but now they have a new worry. Are you looking out your window going our home is spared, but now it could be round 2 . Yeah, definitely. Its a big condition for us because, you know concern for us because, you know, weve heard about sinkholes and everything and were getting quite a bet of rain and theres not a lot of safety out there to kind of prevent it. Reporter just a few doors down their neighbors home went up in flames in october. Today it is a massive pile of rain soaked ruins. The city of santa rosa has done what it can to alert residents and take preventive measures. Theyve put up 30 signs around town and mailed out 3,000 notices to homeowners about high risk areas. Im doing a lot of work to protect our storm drain systems, to provide stabilization of our hillsides using hydra mulch and seeding, straw waddles. Reporter back live in the san jose area you can see the steady downfall continuing into the evening. Residents are being warned to check on the areas that they live in specifically. If you live in a high risk area, there are preventive measures that you can take. The city has a web page of information and thats on our kpix5 web page. You can refer to that for the latest information. Thats the latest here from santa rosa. Im Juliette Goodrich, kpix5. Some breaking news, this picture just in of storm damage in San Francisco, a tree has come down narrowly missing that muni bus just a few minutes ago on sampson street near pacific. No word on any injuries, but, of course, it will take some time to clear away the tree. Kpix5s len ramirez is live in oakland where drivers are navigating some flooded streets, too. Len . Reporter thats right. A lot of flooded streets in the city of oakland. The rain is now coming down again in the city of oakland after a brief lull last hour, but that is not a good situation for a bit of flooding that we have on one of the frontage roads to highway 880. This is just one of the hazards many drivers have had to dodge today. Just getting on the freeway was dangerous on this ramp to eastbound highway 24, so much rain falling freeway storm drains backed up causing hydroplaning conditions. To show you. Check out this car fire about an there was also flooding on city streets in oakland. This section of hyde street flooded with about a foot of water leading to a backup across some train tracks. Oakland police kept the tracks clear as cars waded through the water and several low lying streets near the Oakland Coliseum were also partially covered with water making for hazardous driving conditions. And not even drivers with a roof overhead could escape all the rain. Puddles on the upper deck of the bay bridge leaked onto the lower deck below giving cars on eastbound 80 unexpected showers. For a time today there was a concern that this flooded frontage road would leak onto the 880. That didnt happen. With more rain coming down now, that concern is a possibility again, though it does seem that traffic on 880 in both directions at least in the Oakland Coliseum area does seem to be moving rather well. Reporting live in oakland, len ramirez, kpix5. We want you home safe, len. Look at this video of a car fire about an hour ago. This is the san mateo bridge in the eastbound lanes. Right now one lane is blocked still for cleanup. Some traffic is getting through, not clear if anybody was hurt there. A lot of standing water for drivers to worry about, though. A small lake at this off ramp in San Francisco. Also flood barriers are up at 17th and folsom in the city. In san jose nearly everyone we saw had an umbrella on their way to work this morning. The south bay not missing out on the rain this time around. Kpix5s mark sayre is live in south san jose where people in flood zones are doing what they can to protect their home. Mark . Reporter indeed, veronica. The rain has come down steadily all day, literally not a single break all day long including now and, of course, the recent flooding in san jose is very much on the minds of some residents. E kind of anxiety. nats of driving this was the view this morning from southbound 280a approaching highwa were out as peop felix contaros stopped by one of san joses free sandbag stations. His house has flooded twice before and now every time it rains he is on edge. Reek every but th i cant sleep sometimes, yeah, because of that, you know, some type of anxiety. Reporter this was the view this morning from southbound 280 approaching highway 87 and umbrellas were out as people tried to stay dry on the way to work in downtown san jose. Back at the sandbag station contaros says he has a specific plan for the sandbags. In my driveway, the lower spot. Reporter here along rock spring drive, one of the most heavily damaged areas in last februarys flood, residents say every time it rains they always keep an eye on coyote creek, but this year the reservoir that feeds this creek, anderson reservoir, is being kept at a lower level to avoid any potential repeat. Im worried, yeah. Reporter tell me why. Because im scared. Too much water. Reporter but others are trying to see the Positive Side hoping this storm brings needed rain but not too much rain. As long as we dont get the flooding we got last year. We need somewhere in the middle. I think the rain is great. Reporter otis james says its up to all of us to make necessary Lifestyle Changes rain or no rain. We need to learn to live and adjust our lives to whatever the situation, the circumstances are. And its for our health. Its for our wellbeing. Reporter and water supply, too. And for our water supply. Reporter now, of course, one of the usual trouble spots when it rains like this is highway 17 over the summit in the santa cruz mountains. There was a significant accident around the noon hour. We just checked on that. It is now clear, smooth sailing in the southbound commute direction on highway 17 at this hour. Live in south san jose, im mark sayre, kpix5. One more check of hidef doppler right now. Its not just Northern California getting hit this evening. Major storms to the south have forced thousands to evacuate. Well have much more storm coverage for you straight ahead. Six claimed San Francisco leaders are putting politics over Public Safety. The city pulled out of a federal Terror Task Force nearly a year ago. Now the Police Union Says its a dangerous move. Our phil matier is here with that story. Thats right. Theyre saying it very loudly and clearly and in various radio ads and listen to what it is theyre saying. Last month an isis sympathizer was charged in federal court with planning a Christmas Day terrorist attack on pier 39. San franciscos police union is calling on city hall to drop the politics and get on board the federal antiterror team that the city pulled out of following the election of donald trump. Fo cial agent and somehow they feel that cooperating with the federal agency is somehow endorsing the trump administration, which is ludacris. If you ask any fbi agent, they would say this is extremely dangerous. Reporter San Francisco supervisor Hillary Ronan was one of those who last february called on the cops to stop cooperating with the feds. Her reason . The general concerns were about the Muslim Community and the targeting of that community and especially by this administration in washington. Reporter former fbi special agent and kpix5 security analyst jeff harp, however, says thats not what the terror cops are all about. Who is targeted . Thats people who are suspected of being involved in international terrorism. It doesnt have a check box. Reporter in the middle of all this is police chief bill scott caught between a political rock and a Public Safety hard place. In order to reenter an m. O. U. That has to go through the board of supervisors and the police commission. Reporter indeed the past year the Police Mission man looking into getting back on the task force, but so far no results. What was said then still to this day is there were some things we had to look at in terms of our policies, particularly our First Amendment policies. Sfpd pulled out of the joint Terrorism Task force for reasons that were more political than anything else. It certainly wasnt related to Public Safety. The civil liberties, religious liberties and the freedom of people of all religions in San Francisco remains important. Its been a year and still not much movement. Why are the police doing this now . Well, theres a mayors race kicking off in San Francisco and likely theyre trying to make this part of the agenda or at least one of their issues. Phil matier, kpix5. Back to you. Thank you, phil. Fired from google and fighting back, these this engineers memo writer heading to court. It started with a spat and ended in a shove, now a bay area city councilwoman is paying up big. Olympic dreams coming true, a bay area skating sensation snags a spot on team usa, the homemade remedy that helped her beat the flu. You could generate your own energy, at home. Or to save energy, unplug unused appliances. Do your thing, with Energy Upgrade california. Efforts. Is now taking the company to court. Hes says google discriminated against white people, men. And conservatives. Kpix fives melissa caen is here a man fired by google after he blasted its Diversity Efforts is now taking the company to court. He said google discriminated against white people, men, conservatives. Kpix5s melissa caen joins us now with the story. We already know google is being sued for failing to pay women the same as men at the company, but today they got hit with a whole new lawsuit by a slew of employees saying theyve been harassed and discriminated against. Theres kind of a lord of the flies mentality there where a person can be singled out, then group shamed, bullied and fire as if theyre not a human being. Reporter this attorney said google was vicious against her client james damore in a diversity training. He wrote a memo saying differences in distribution between men and women may in part explain why we dont have 50 representation of women in tech and leadership. On average he said women may just prefer other jobs. There are multiple other explanations to googles specific disparity than simply bias. Reporter the memo was made public and set off a firestorm and damore was fired, but the lawsuit filed today in santa clara goes far beyond his experience. Its a class action lawsuit. Jobs are reserved in google for minority and women. Thats illegal under california employment law. In california your viewpoint is to protect a characteristic. I could no more refuse to hire an attorney at my firm because they voted for Bernie Sanders than google can refuse to promote somebody because they voted for donald trump. The lawsuit itself is nearly 200 pages long and it contains almost 100 pages of screen shots from internal google Message Boards and these screen shots are meant to show the kind of harassment and discrimination faced by white people, man and conservatives at the company and men and conservatives at the company and here are a few. A meme generator said if you want to increase diversity at google, fire all the bigoted white men. There are conservative black lists inside of google its alleged. A manager said, im considering creating a public inside google document of people who make diversity difficult, which she defined as people who repeatedly make public statements unsupportive of diversity. In a followup she wrote that managers could use that list to take action within their teams and she may use it to insure that committees are aware of their behavior and take that into account when deciding whether to promote them, so some very inflammatory things in this lawsuit contained in this attachment. I think there will be a lot of followup. Is there a response yet from google . We reached out to google who are notoriously tight lipped and they as usual said nothing but, we are looking forward to defending against this lawsuit. So more to come. Thank you, melissa. A jury awarded more than half a Million Dollars in punitive damages against an oakland city councilwoman. Desley brooks must pay 550,000 to former black panther leader elaine brown stemming from an argument between the two women over Affordable Housing issues at an oakland restaurant in 2015. Brooks allegedly shoved brown causing her to fall injuring her rotator cuff. Last month the same jury awarded brown more than 3 million in a civil suit. The city is on the hook for that one, but this new award will come from the councilwomans pocket. Storm watch now, slick roads could be a factor in this fatal crash in palo alto on page mill road. Police say the driver lost control and struck a tree. The man was pronounced dead on the scene. Trimming trees that could come lines. Pg e crews on the streets in san jose, crews were trimming trees that could come in contact with power lines. As of now, the storm is not a huge impact on power outages. Pg e reports only about 300 customers without power. In the meantime rain in the sierra is turning to snow in the Higher Elevations as much needed wet weather moves in, this shot from our sierra at tahoe camera showing new snow coating trees at 8,000 feet. Like to see that level come down a bit, right, paul . It would be wonderful if this was a 4,000 or 5,000 level snow foot event. Its coming from the tropics. Its still pouring in San Francisco. The rain began about 18 hours ago and has not let up and, if anything, over the past 90 minutes its gotten more intense. Same story in the north bay where its pouring highway 101 all wait from the golden gate to healdsburg, all the way from the golden gate to healdsburg, highway 29 through napa valley. Highway 12 is getting wet. San jose in the Santa Clara Valley is soggy again. Were starting to see heavier rain move inland. Walnut creek, antioch and livermore, your rain will pick up as well. Sick 1 the high in hayward today 61 the high in hayward today, fremont 58, the big story all the rainfall. The focus shifts from northern to Southern California as this low pressure area dives down close to the burn zones in Southern California which are more recent scars and theyre expecting 3 to 6 inches of rainfall. They actually have a higher likelihood of seeing some flash flooding in Southern California from the thomas fire burn zones and ventura and Santa Barbara county. For us the rain continues until about midnight and then it tapers off, breezy to windy conditions and overnight lows comparable to the average high for this time of year. 54 in san jose, napa and 55 in San Francisco. Showers continue tomorrow. I want you to hear this first. Even with the rain in our forecast, like 10 as intense as today, scattered showers, brief heavy downpours tomorrow, basically the steady rainfall down after midnight tonight tapering off to showers tomorrow. Highs around 60 degrees, fremont for you 59, concord 60, Mountain View 58 degrees. Then magically it goes away. Well have five or six straight dry days once this storm is gone. Were consolidating all the rain for half a month in one storm. Thats today and tomorrow morning. Showers likely till midafternoon tomorrow. Then we go dry wednesday through sunday, highs in the 60s with a lot of sunshine with some showers possible early next week. The next few hours if anybody is out driving, its going to be rough. The heavy rain will continue. Back to you. Well watch for that. Thanks, paul. Fro
