Transcripts For KPIX State Of The Union Address 20180131

Give you the sense bipartisanship is alive and well when you saw reactions on either side, but talking specifically on some of these issues, immigration i think first and foremost, which a lot of people say they want a broad, big deal done, what are the prospects now . That was the only time you heard democrats boo and hiss in the room was when the president said the immigration policy needs to be changed because right now immigrants can bring in an unlimited number of extended family members which democrats say just arent the truth and theres a backlog that lasts years. Those are the battle lines when you talk about immigration. Both sides say they want to do something about these socalled dreamers and come to an agreement quickly and yet what democrats want to do about it and what republicans want to do is so different. Leaders say they met today and made some progress, but as long as youre talking about keeping immigrant families from being able to bring in siblings and parents, adult children, democrats will balk. Reporter a debate over nuclear families, how that plays out, you hear two parallel tracks. One is were making progress and another says Neither Party necessarily has an enormous impetus to get this done before midterms. Reporter right. Republicans are thrilled he laid out the four pillars and yet a lot of conservatives are very frustrated with his proposal of a pathway to citizenship even just for this narrow dreamer population. They say thats amnesty and opens the door for more immigrants to get the same treatment. Reporter plenty more to unpack here, but for now back to nora in new york. Thank you. White house and Senior Foreign Affairs correspondent margaret brennan. Response to the state of the union in a minute. First, were following breaking news in the east bay. Chopper 5 over a fire burning at a Metal Recycling co well move on to the state of the union in just a moment, but first we are following breaking news in the east bay, chopper 5 over a fire burning at a Metal Recycling company in richmond. You can see a huge plume of smoke coming up for miles around and all the smoke is prompting some Health Advisories for the richmond area tonight. That fire is happening at Sims Metal Management company on south fourth street. The shelter in place has been expanded now and it now covers north richmond, atchison village, santa fe and the Iron Triangle. People are advised to stay indoors and keep windows and doors closed. A pile of strap metal about 20 feet high somehow caught fire around 5 00 this afternoon. From chopper 5 weve seen crews using a claw to try to move some of those piles of metal to get at the flames and they are having a tough time doing that as you can see all the smoke coming up. This is video from about a half hour ago from chopper 5 showing the fire flaring up again. You can see the bright orange flames. These fires often can be very difficult to put out and go on for hours because the flames are burning deal within the pile of debris and there is metal melting there igniting and it is very difficult to put out. People are sharing their photos of the fire. Heres a picture posted on instagram earlier and you can see the intense smoke coming up. This one shows the smoke from interstate 580 which runs right by that scrapyard just adjacent to the smoke blowing away there. This is video taken from our bridge camera at the Richmond San Rafael bridge before sunset. You can see the dark smoke coming up that way, smoke billowing into the sky. It is blowing toward the east. The Contra Costa County hazmat team is monitoring air quality in the area, as we mentioned. And another picture from twitter from gretchen of the flames visible from east richmond, actually the smoke visible there. You can see the haze and the black smoke coming up. Again shelter in place for several neighborhoods in the richmond vicinity of that Metal Fabrication yard. Its on fire. Back to more pictures from chopper 5 now, no word on exactly how this fire got started, but again the information you need to know, a shemer in place advisory in effect for neighborhoods around that fire including north richmond, atchison village, santa fe and Iron Triangle and, of course, well keep you informed on the progress of this firefight. You can follow the story to www. Cbssf. Com. Well have regular updates there. Now back to cbs news and the coverage of the state of the union. Woman so, greg, its a lot to take in. Woman 2 and i know thats hard to hear, but the doctors caught it early. Hi, blake my dad has cancer. Woman and i know how hard that is to hear. But youre in the right place. Man and dr. Pascal and her team, they know what to do. They know what to do. The doctors know what to do. So heres the plan. First off, were going to give you all. voice fading away k with tonight i am extending an open hand to work with members of both parties, democrats and republicans, to protect our citizens of every background, color, religion and creed. Applause President Trump lobbied for immigra President Trump lobbied for his Immigration Reform plan minutes ago. In his first state of the Union Address he said the u. S. Is a compassionate nation and that americans are dreamers, too. In a few moments well see the democratic response. Welcome back to cbs news life coverage. The rebuttal to the state of the Union Address is often a chance to introduce a fresh face and rising star to a national audience. Yet tonights response comes from one of americas most famous political dynasties. Representative joe kennedy, iii of massachusetts will look to draw what he calls a powerful contrast to President Trumps broken promises in areas of healthcare and civil rights. Were told inside this audience is about 30 students who are all involved in school government. So he is speaking amongst the people. He is the only Third Generation kennedy in office in congress. So this is a big moment for him on the national stage. You. Ause . Thank you, thank you, thank you. You. Good and good evening, ladies and gentlemen. It is an absolute privilege to join you all tonight. We are here in fall river, massachusetts, a proud American City. [ cheering and applause ] an a ity built an American City built by immigrants. From textiles to robots, this is a place that knows how to make great things. applause the students are with us here this evening, in the Auto Tech Program at diman regional tech school to carry on that rich legacy. applause like Many American home towns, fall river has faced its share of storms. But the people here are tough. They fight for each other. They pull for their city. It is a fitting place to gather as our nation reflects on the state of our union. This is a difficult task. Many have spent the last year anxious, angry, afraid. We all feel the fractured fault lines across our country. We hear the voices of americans who are forgotten and feel forsaken. We see an economy that makes stocks soar, investor portfolios bulge, and corporate profits climb, but fails to give workers their fair share of the reward; a government that struggles to keep itself open, russia, knee deep in our democracy. An allout war on environmental protection. A Justice Department rolling back civil rights by the day. Hatred and supremacy, proudly marching in our streets. Bullets tearing through our classrooms. Concerts and congregations, targeting our safest sacred places. And this nagging, sirvegging feeling, no matter your political beliefs, that this is not right. This is not who we are. applause cheers folks, it would be easy to dismiss this past year as chaos, partisanship, as politics. But its far, far bigger than that. This administration isnt just targeting the laws that protect us. Theyre targeting the very idea that we are all worthy of protection. For them, dignity isnt something youre born with, but something you measure by your net worth, your celebrity, your headlines, your crowd size, not to mention the jerpd of your spouse, gender of your spouse, the country of your birth, the color of your skin, the god of your prayers. Their record is rebuked to our highest american ideal, the belief that we are all worthy, that we are all equal, that we all count, in the eyes of our law and our leaders, our god, and our government. That is the american promise. applause cheers but today, ladies and gentlemen, today, that promise is being broken by an administration that callously appraises ourworthiness and decides who makes the cut and who can be bargained away. Theyre turning American Life into a zerosum game where for one to win, another must lose. Where we can guarantee americas safety if we slashafety net. Where we can extend health care in mississippi, if we gut it in massachusetts. We can cut taxes for corporations today, if we raise them on families tomorrow. Where we can take care of sick kids if we sacrifice dreamers. We are bombarded with one false choice after another. Coal miners or single moms. Rural communities or inner cities. The coast or the heartland. As if the mechanic in pittsburgh, a teacher in tulsa, and a daycare worker in birmingham are bitter rivals, rather than mutual casualties of a system forcefully rigged towards those at the top. As if the parent who lies weak terrified that their transgender son or daughter will be beaten and bullied at school is any more or less legitimate than a parent whose heart is shattered by a daughter in the grips of an opioid addition. So here is the answer that democrats offer tonight we choose both. cheers and applause are we fight we fight for bo both, because the greatest, strongest, richest nation in the world should not have to leave anyone behind. applause we choose we choose a better deal for all who call our country home. We choose a living wage and paid leave and affordable child care your family needs to survive. We choose pensions that are solvent, trade pacts that are fair, road roads and bridges tht wont rust away, a good education that you can afford. We choose a Health Care System that offers you mercy, whether you suffer from cancer, or depression or addiction. We choose an economy Strong Enough to boast record stock prices and brave enough to admit that top c. E. O. S making 300 times their average worker is not right. cheers and applause we choose fall river. We choose the thousands of American Communities whose roads arent paved with power or privilege but with an honest effort, with good faith, and the resolve to build Something Better for your kids. That, that is our story. It began the day our Founding Fathers and mothers set sail for a new world, fleeing oppression and intolerance. It continued with every word of our independence. The audacity to declare that all men are created equal. An imperfect promise for a nation struggling to become a more perfect union. It grew with every suffragette step, every freedom riders voice, and with ever weary soul we welcomed to our shores, and to all the dreamers out there watching tonight, let be me absolutely clear ustedes son parte de nuestra historia. Vamos a luchar por ustedes y no nos vamos alejar. You are part of our story. We will fight for you, and we will not walk away. cheers and applause we will not walk away. America, we carry that story on our shoulders. You swarmed to washington last year to ensure that no parent has to worry if they can afford to save their childs life. You proudly marched together last weekend, thousands deep, on the streets of las vegas and philadelphia and nashville. You sat high atop your moms shoulders and held a sign that read, build a wall and my generation will tear it down. cheers and applause you bravely say me, too. You steadfastly say black lives matter. You wade through floodwaters, battle hurricanes, brave wildfires and mudslides to save a stranger. You battle your own quiet battles every single day. You drag your weary bodies to that extra shift so that your families wont feel the sting of scarcity. You leave loved ones at home to defend our country overseas, but patrol our neighborhoods at night. You serve, you rescue, you help, you heal. That, more than any law or leader, debate or disagreement, that is what drives us towards progress. Bullies may land a punch, they may leave a mark, but they have never, not once in the history of our United States, managed to match the strength and spirit of a People United in defense of their future. Politicians applause politicians can be cheered for the promises they make. Our country will be judged by the promises we keep. applause that is the measure of our character. That is who we are. Out of many, one. Ladies and gentlemen, have fai faith, have faith. The state of our union is hopeful, were resilient, and enduring. applause god bless you. God bless your families. And may god bless the United States of america. Thank you. cheers and applause thats congressman joe kennedy iii with the democratic response to the president s state of the Union Address. It was a competition tonight to see who could be the celebrant for america and who could fight for those regular, everyday americans. The president constructed his america, and you saw the congressman there doing the same. Hes in his third term, and he was chosen by the leadership because they say he and his record stand in contrast to President Trump, but they had some similarity wheres they said the economy is strong and that we are better than this, and that we need to be unified. Its interesting how they were both saying the same things addressing to different audiences. Yeah, and joe kennedy speak spanish there. He is fluent in spanish. And, also, choosing a town, fall river, mass. , known as spindle city, that was built by immigrants, as a direct contrast to some of the policies the president laid out tonight. If you wanted to boil it all down, because the president spent so much time on immigration it is the president saying americans are dreamers, too, and congressman kennedy there, speaking fluently to dreamers in their own language. If you had to boil it all down into something, thats not a bad encapsulation, if i do say so myself. Yeah. I think the challenge now, too, certainly, is how does the president take what he said tonight and does anything at all change on capitol hill . As you were saying before, there is a context and atmosphere outside of that speech, and the president creates that in every fast news cycle that goes churning through the day. And how long does this last before that old news cycle, which has been the dominant news cycle, kick backs in . He started saying he wanted to reach across the aisle, that now is the time to set our differences aside and unite. We will see. Thats it for us. And we want to thank jeff glor and nancy cordes back down in washington. There they are jeff, well see you tomorrow night on the cbs evening news.
