All right, vern. Thanks. Two people are dead after a wrongway crash on an east bay highway. It happened early today on highway 24 near the approach to the caldecott tunnel. The driver who caused it may have been drunk. The chp described the damage to the cars as catastrophic. A cameraman arrived on scene moments after impact to capture all the drama and carnage. This is why the chp reminds the public again and again, do not drink and drive. Reporter there were so many victims that this man who was conscious and seemed to have less severe injuries had to wait his turn to get rescued. There was nothing to do but watch and wait as First Responders came from all over the county to load up his friends into ambulances as fast as they could pull him out of the toyota camry. All five victims inside the camry went into the hospital with serious injuries. The suspect driver and his passenger are now dead. Just before 2 00 this morning, investigators say a 35yearold man entered highway 24 in orinda going the wrong way. Investigators will be checking surveillance cameras to see if he entered the freeway at which road. Its not clear how fast or for how long he went the wrong way, but officer Brandon Correa says there are clues alcohol may have been a factor. Theres many things we look for. Doesnt mean 100 that the person is impaired, but it leads us to a conclusion that maybe this person is impaired. Reporter the passenger of the wrongway car died at the scene. Firefighters worked for some time to free the suspect driver who was trapped inside. Paramedics took him to the hospital where he died as well. Driving impaired is 100 preventable 100 of the time. Dont let anybody tell you anything different. Whether its alcohol, marijuana, anything that impairs you when driving a motor vehicle, its preventable. Theres rideshare. You can take public transit. Police in San Francisco tried to figure out who shot and killed a man on the western edition. The search is on tonight for a healdsburg man missing in the grand canyon. 66yearold Peter Francis schwab went on a rafting trip on the Colorado River and was reported missing after going on a hike. Emeryville will see the biggest jump to 16. 30 an hour. Thousands of veterans exposed to cancercausing chemicals like agent orange during the vietnam war will now be eligible for benefits. The governor says it will save taxpayers money in the long run. But how . Your premiums are higher as a consequence for paying for everybodys sick care. That happened at the Municipal Airport in addison on the outskirts of dallas. Witnesses say they could tell from the plumes of black smoke that something tragic had happened. It was really thick, like you could tell there was some burning chemicals or gas or oil. It definitely looked black enough for it to be serious. The twin engine beechcraft had just taken off. The plane was reportedly bound for st. Petersburg, florida. But theres no other information being released about the people onboard. Shocking new video tonight of a terrifying traffic stop in florida. Stop. Put it in park. Body camera video captures the moment a deputy pulls over a 38yearold man. It happened yesterday in seminole county. The deputy smelled marijuana coming from the car so he asked the man to turn off the vehicle. Thats when everything escalated. Authorities say the driver sped off, dragging the deputy. The deputy fired several shots into the escalade as he held on before breaking away and rolling into the median. If he would have been thrown on the interstate, you can only imagine what would have happened. The driver lost control of his car and ran away. After more a more than sevenhour manhunt, the suspect was arrested. The deputy was not seriously hurt and is expected to make a full recovery. Oakland police are investigating a street race that ended in a fatal crash this weekend. This was the scene on san leandro street yesterday evening about 5 00. Police say a driver racing another car slammed into a light pole and thats the result. The impact bent the vehicle in half. Anybody who witnessed the crash or the street race is asked to Contact Oakland police. With Independence Day approaching, fire crews are on alert for brush fires sparked by illegal fireworks. As kpix 5s devin fehely reports, Contra Costa County is taking a new approach to prevent these fires from happening in the first place. The Fire Department held its first ever Fireworks Takeback Program this weekend and the idea behind it is a fairly simple one. Its the belief that every firework you take off the street is a potential fire avoided. For firefighters, the calculation is simple. Would you rather have fireworks dropped off here or deal with them out here, where dried grassy hillsides and homes meet . Were surrounded by rolling grasslands. As you drive down the roads, you can see all the grass is completely dried out already. It poses a definite threat and a risk to the community.
