Those living in homes surveyed within a mile of the plant had cancer rates of nearly 7 . Go a half mile farther away, and the cancer rate drops significantly, by almost 40 . Denka said it hasnt had a chance to see the new study, and cites a state tumor registry that does not show a cancer increase in reserve. The company says the e. P. A. s chloroprene concerns are based on faulty science, resulting in a dramatically inflated risk factor. Of landing a man on the moon, and returning him safely to the earth. Odonnell returning safely was a daunting task. President Richard Nixon had a speech drafted just in case the apollo 11 mission failed. Some history. Im Norah Odonnell in washington. Good night. This is the cbs overnight news. Welcome to the overnight news. Im meg oliver. Republicans and democratic are working feverishly to spin a longawaited congressional testimony of former special Counsel Robert Mueller who led the two year Russian Investigation interference in our last election. He spent more than five hours answering questions from two house committees and offers little that wasnt already in his final report. President trump his family and aides unleashed a tweet storm against mueller and democrats on the committee. Some democratics hope it is the First Step Towards impeachment so help you god. Reporter democrats kicked off the longawaited hearings by asking mueller to set the record straight. The president has repeatedly claimed that your report found there was no obstruction, and that it completely and totally exonerated him. But that is not what your report said, is it . Correct, that is not what the report said. And what about total exoneration . Did you actually totally exonerate the president . No. But under department of justice policy, the president could be prosecuted for obstruction of justice crimes after he leaves office, correct . True. Reporter the former special counsel chose his words carefully, as democrats walked him through the ten potential acts of president ial obstruction, detailed in his report. President trump told don mcgahn, mueller has to go. Correct . Correct. The white House Counsel thought that the president s request was completely out of bounds. He said the president asked him to do something crazy. It was wrong. And he was prepared to resign over it. Thats what it says in the report, yes, and i go i stand by the report. Do you recall, i think its page 78 of volume 2, the president told sessions, you were supposed to protect me. You were supposed to protect me, or words to that effect . Correct. And is the attorney general supposed to be the attorney general of the United States of america, or the consiglieri for the president . United states of america. Reporter hundreds lined the hallways, hoping for a glimpse of history as republicans accused mueller of bias. You hired a bunch of people that did not like the president. And you must be aware by now that six of your lawyers donated 12,000 directly to hillary clinton. I have been in this business for almost 25 years, and in those 25 years, i have not had occasion, once, to ask somebody about their political affiliation. Reporter at times, he struggled to keep up with depositionstyle questioning from lawmakers who spent months preparing. That went a little fast for me. Reporter intelligence chairman adam schiff askedim about the ties between russians and the Trump Campaign. In fact, the Campaign Welcomed the russian help, did they not . I think we reported in the report, indications that that occurred, yes. Reporter but the bottom line, republicans said, is that mueller did not find evidence of a conspiracy otherwise known as collusion. And its starting to look like, having desperately tried and failed to make a legal case against the president , you made a political case instead. You put it in a paper sack, lit it on fire, dropped it on our porch, rang the doorbell and ran. Reporter muellers team did charge six Trump Associates with other federal crimes, including lying to prosecutors. And that lies by Trump Campaign officials and Administration Officials impeded your investigation . I would generally agree with that. Sneaker pelosi just told us that one of the Top Priorities now is something that was outside of muellers purview, and that is investigating the president s finances, particularly his Financial Relationships with russian entities. She said that if the house does pursue impeachment, democrats want to do it with the strongest hand possible. Although, of course, its unclear, norah, what, if anything, theyll uncover in this money probe. The democrats lost so big today, their party is in shambles right now. Reporter the president says he won the day, once again dismissing the entire russia investigation as a hoax. A phony cloud. Thats all it was. And they should be ashamed of themselves. Reporter the president continues to say that Robert Muellers report totally exonerates him on the question of obstruction of justice. Robert mueller specifically testified that he did not exonerate you. Why do you continue to say that he does . He totally folded, because he never had the right to exonerate. Reporter for most of the day, there was no marine guard outside the west wing, because mr. Trump stayed in the residence and watched the hearings on tv. He gave Robert Muellers performance a scathing review. If you listen to the internet, this was one of the worst performances in the history of our country. Reporter the president had nothing at all on his schedule today, and he appears to have spent most of his time watching these hearings and tweeting about them. That despite saying earlier this week that he probably would not watch them. The president is now in West Virginia tonight on a fundraiser, as he focuses on his reelection. Protests continue in puerto rico where the governor and his aides are embroiled in a political scandal. The governors spokanesman said walked out right now but didnt say what the governor will say. Is he going to resign. Its incredibly difficult to get information today. All of this happening as hundreds of people are 30 yards beyond the gate protest sfg, thats the line all week where protesters have gathered to demand this governor out. Two years ago the house here said if the governor doesnt resign tonight they will start impeachment proceedings tomorrow. But the speaker said if the governor does resign tonight they will not start impeachment proceedings. Boeing said it may soochb remains grounded following two deadly crashes overseas. Kris van cleave tells us it could soon get worse for boeing, and for our u. S. Economy. Reporter in may, muilenburg spoke exclusively to cbs evening news anchor Norah Odonnell. Immigrant advocates believe it violates an agreement that mandates children be released as quickly as possible. They argue some of the administrations policy. Even i. C. E. And the children are fearful that their parents will be harmed or their aunts or uncles will be or others in the household are be targeted and i think thats a legitimate fear. Connor michael cbs sunday morning. Some day if you are in the right place and lucky you will look up and see an eagle on the wing, it is a sight to stop your hard. The first broadcast on sunday featured this report from maine where bald eagles where are on the brink of extinction. As an endangered species but 40 years later the Eagle Population has soared. With your support and help of congress we can reclaim and preserve the Natural Beauty of america. In the decades since president Richard Nixon signed the endangered species act the landmark law has grown to cover more than 2400 species, good news 99 of them have not been declared extinct and only two 2 have recovered like the bald eagle and the al gator. Recovery takes time. Hes way down there. Consider this little guy. Dusty gopher frog listed in 2001. Nearly two decades later only 200 or so left in the wild living around this mississippi pond. Enter biologists bearing tupper wear. You guys are going to do good. Its a picture of the act at work. Inside the containers more than 300 frogs bred through vitro fertilization and released into a second sight in mississippi hoping for the adults to mate. But time is just one of the challenges saving the species. Another is money. We currently dont have enough money to recover more than 25 of all of the species. So under current funding scenarios we cant recover everything, not sure we can save everything from extinction. This is the director of biodiversity at Bioinnovation Center and says not only are there not enough money but the limbitied funds are frequently misallocated. Huge bias which species get the most money. Im going to guess cute ones. It helps if you are cute majestic or economically valuable. Those are the species that frequently get the lion share of government funds. But for every polar bear and seaoter theres hundreds more like the fairy shrimp. New mexico jump mouse. Or kupurple cat water muscle. 40 endangered species are plants. There are certain plants down to a handful of these lesser known species makes the news is because of conflict with one species, home owe sapiens. The courts agreed with environment complaint that the completion of the damn would destroy the only known habit of the snail darter. From the snail darter in 70s. Tohe spotted owl in the 90s. Because they want to have us give over a land and turn it into a frog resort. To the little dusky gopher frog that got all the way to the Supreme Court last year. Endangered species are most controversial when they endanger profits and property. He told us around 3 of his families 45,000 acres in louisiana had been designated as critical habit at for the dusky gopher frog but they are all 450 mi 40 miles away in mississippi. Theres no realistic possibility that a caravan of frogs would hop down the road and magical li find my land by some sort of divine froggy inspiration. The government said the frog lives in this area before it was endangered and the land has special ponlds need forward its survival. The designation in order to develop we have to get the federal government permission. Its still your land. But theyve effectively taken it. Earlier this month the eight year battle came to an end. The government abandoned efforts to mark his property as critical habit at. Excite these long drawn out every once in a while works as a fox who were added to endangered species in 20 04 todays she they today they show up even when youre not looking for them. What do we have, got one. Right behind you. Timing is everything. Yeah. Its an important time in the history of the endangered species act. The summer the Trump Administration is expected to finalize a series of new regulatory changes to the act. One major revision would be to publish the cost for protecting and recovering any new species proposed for the list. We asked the interior Department Deputy chief of staff for policy about it. The law is very, very clear. Listing decision can only be based on best available science and commercial information not on the cost of listing species. If you know that cost dont you think if might influence whether people are more likely to protect it or not if you hear its obscenely expensive. Well i think the public has a right to know. I think we want to be transparent in the Decision Making process. Another change would likely it reduce protections for threatened species on the list. Step below endangered species. We want to accomplish the objective of the act and protect and recover endangered species and threat evaned spe and threatened species but want to protect the public from this issue. Changes are the issue but not if it makes it more difficult. Endangered species recored 54 species and prevented hundreds from going extent. Thats not good enough. Thats the problem. We need much better, faster, cheaper ways to maiocco maiocco take it work. Many species may not have much time left.
