Reporter investigators say the 31yearold victim from South San Francisco died from his injuries at the scene of the crash. Detectives are looking for a blue or green box shaped suv, possibly a toyota or a subaru. Its a tragedy. Its crazy how like you just cant see someone whos innocent and trying to help someone else, and i dont know how like you can live with this. Just driving away after killing someone. Reporter thats something the chp would like to ask the driver once they track them down. We checked repeatedly with the coroners office, and they say theyve not been able to get in contact with the victims family, so theyre not releasing his name. Da lin is live outside the department and has been looking into why Ann Kirkpatrick was let go. Reporter right, allen. The chief was extremely popular among the rank and file. In fact many officers respected her and trusted her. But observers say her downfall was she could not reform this Police Department and was leading it in the wrong direction. The 183rd academy graduation, a joy would ful day, but overshadowed by the firing of chief Ann Kirkpatrick. The decision was extremely difficult, but i believe it was in the best interest of oakland. Reporter but the active chief and the mayor avoided the media today. The graduates were even told not to speak to reporters. But a couple of speakers on stage acknowledged the chief. The Police Commissioner and mayor fired kirkpatrick without cause. The Commission Later said it was over her failure to increase compliance with Court Ordered reforms related to the Riders Police misconduct lawsuit. That case resulted in federal oversight of opd thats dragged on since 2003. We lost confidence over the last 2 and a half years. Theres a problem with the backsliding and it was very bad, and ultimately unacceptable. Reporter civil rights attorney jim chaning is involved in the monitoring of the reform and says the Police Department was so close to full compliance, just 3 items left. But under kirkpatricks leadership, a federal judge added 5 more tasks. Some of those are related to the Police Shooting of a homeless man in 2018. The commission and the federal monitor wanted chief kirkpatrick to fire those officers, but kirkpatrick refused. She was sold to the city of oakland and residents as a reformer. But she came and actually turned into a conformer. Reporter but some city leaders supported the chief. Under her leadership, crime dropped di ar 2017. But it lewentdo back upub in 20 this is the 10th or 11th police chief in my 7 years . We keep changing one after another, coming out with the same result, firing everybody, and i still got the monitor that im paying now, that whole experience has cost me 20 million that i could use to clean and fix the street, hire more police, but no im playing this political game. Reporter mayor libby schaaf wants to launch a National Search for the next chief, but the chair at the Police Commission say theyd like to hire someone from within the Police Department. Its unknown exactly when the students will get to come back to class here. Classes were canceled today as they await testing for tce that was discovered in the ground water supply last week, and now the air on campus must be tested to see if its vaporized. This substance, tce, is a carcinogen and we want to be absolutely certain the property is safe for anybody to go back to. Thats why were doing the testing. Reporter the campus of 50 students likely wont be back to class until tuesday or wednesday. Classes will be moved to off site locations, including possibly other elementary and middle schools, and it could extend the school year. When we miss x number of school days, theres always a possibility that you would have to make them up at the end of the year.
