This afternoon a vegetation fire sent flames and smoke shooting into the air above san bruno mountain. Kpix 5s devin fehely tells us cal fire crews were caught a little shorthanded. Reporter this is what the fire looked like from the ground, red hot and racing up the dry hillsides. From the air, you could see a thick column of billowing black smoke as the flames drew dangerously close to a row of homes across the ridge. I saw the smoke, came around, got on the north side of the san bruno state park, was able to get up through the trees on the fire road within 200 feet of it. Reporter its unclear what sparked the blaze, but after an unusually dry february, the flames spread quickly. A small vegetation fire that quickly grew due to the dry atmosphere weve been having lately.
