Side. But we begin at the beginning. Good morning. Here begins something new. Im Charles Kuralt, and this is sunday morning. We dreamed up a program about music and art and nature. Because of its necessary preoccupation with politics and wars and calamities, tv journalism doesnt get around to those gentler subjects very often. Pauley from the very beginning, sunday morning has stayed true to Charles Kuralts vision to make sure those gentler subjects got their due. You think this is me . Oh, definitely. Pauley we traveled the ley traveled tack roads, taking our audience places and showing them things rht t a the lors ithe universe. Right tre. Pomnts shared, where we take off and land. Pauley places we visited and people we met. We come together. Pauley all with the perfect traveling companion. Is there an emergency brake on this guy . Pauley as the world changed, so did we. Time for us to part, you and i. Pauley in 1994, after 15 years at sunday morning, Charles Kuralt said goodbye in his own inimitable style. Tiddywiddley toodley loo, all i want is to stay with you but here i go. Goodbye. Good morning, im Charles Osgood and this is sunday morning. I know, it sounds strange to me, too. Pauley for the next 22 sec informed and delighted. Excuse me . Excuse me . Im with charles now. Congratulations on your work. Pauley two years ago, the page turned again and a new chapter began. Yeah woo thank you very much. Sorry. Was that too much enthusiasm . That was perfect. Pauley as we celebrate our 40th year, we try our best each week to stay true to sunday mornings original mission. This is exciting. Do you watch your movies with your kids . No hey, this is pretty fun. I want to ask you a little about pot. You got one . No. [ laughter ] pauley whatever road we travel on, our goal remains the same im not letting go. To take our viewers, all of you, wherever something remarkable is happening. Pauley our inaugural year, 1979, like every year, provided plenty of news. March brought the partial meltdown at pennsylvanias threemile island Nuclear Power plant. May saw the election of british Prime Minister margaret thatcher. While in november, iranian students seized those american hostages at the u. S. Embassy in tehran, the start of a more than yearlong standoff. 1979 also saw the deaths of hollywood leading man john wayne; composer richard rodgers, half of the legendary broadway duo, rodgers and hammerstein; and that most famous of circus clowns, emmett kelly. And beginning with that first year, all of us at sunday morning have been on the move. Few more than our lee cowan, whos here to log our travels. Good morning, lee. Good morning, jane. You can sort of think of this broadcast almost like a sunday drive. For 40 years, weve meandered from exotic destinations to the mundane, from outoftheway places to our very own backyards so that you could enjoy the view without moving an inch. I had miles and miles ahead of me we stick to the back roads, which are full of surprises. Sunday morning was born, in part, out of an affliction, Charles Kuralts incurable case of wanderlust. When Francis Johnson started saving twine, he just couldnt help himself. This is just crazy. Well, you dont have to be crazy, but it helps a lot. On any given sunday, his itinerary could take you from the largest ball of twine in minnesota to the historic attempt to unravel communism in beijing. Its become something much deeper and stronger. Giant sequoia trees in californias sierra are more than 2,000 years old. In our 40 years, weve tried to maintain that tradition, hoping that each new dot on a map might reveal a new side of ourselves. The total darkness and harsh winters make it nearly impossible to maintain a yearround camp. Weve seen the adventurous spirit of tourists exploring the top of the world and the determination of freezing scientists researching the bottom of it, too. We witnessed the wisdom of setting nature aside as we trekked through our national parks, 59 of them in all. Walking across sand and soil, from the lowest point in the United States to the base of our highest peak. [ bell clangs ] from the brilliant pastels of hollands tulips, colors only Mother Nature can paint. Weve marveled at the palette of the globe, even the shades in space. Is it a spiritual experience . It is very spiritual. As the heavens go, we havent gone, but weve gotten pretty close. A visit to the vatican might suffice. Your holiness, Saint Francis and weve bathed in the voices of angels it was christmas night, 1776. Even joining the throng once or twice. [ bird call ] the Canary Islands have a song of their own in a whistle carried on the wind. Its a language born long ago that we learned can be quite a mouthful. Keep practicing, tracy. Weve seen the charm of children on the frigid shores of iceland lending their hands to help wayward puffins take their first flights out to sea. We encountered some wayward polar bears, too some a little too close for comfort. Mike. Mike. [ meowing ] there were more cats than we could count on an island off japan. Weve sailed the oceans on ships of old and aboard the ships of tomorrow. Instead of lookouts, you now have video monitors . We dont have to have sailors do it. We have cameras do it for us. It looks pretty vintage. It is vintage. Its actually made out of real wood, and you dont find that in aviation anymore. Weve soared above stadiums in the Goodyear Blimp and hovered over cities with a photographer who preferred his helicopter have no doors. Whats it like when youre literally leaning out over the edge over the chopper . You forget about it after a while. Weve rolled on the rails on the maharajas express as it chugged through northern india, and weve taken the wheel in vehicles ourselves handles like a dream. Of every shape and size. But now, in trying to turn this ancient capital into a modern one every year brings stronger along the way, weve stopped off at places that caught our fancy. This building, the Guggenheim Museum on new yorks fifth avenue, is one of the greatest buildings of the 20th century. Museums youd heard of its the elvis is alive museum. And those you probably havent. National pie championships. The world beard and mustache championships. And competitions now theres an experienced camel rider. That might leave you wondering. Are you ready for some pumpkin racing . Oh for 40 years, weve had the privilege of watching the sun set all over the world. The only thing better than its parting rays is knowing the next day we get to set out all over again. Pauley coming up theyre playing our song. Bl make my own insulin. So, youre still smoking . How many vices do you have left . Youve kind of whittled them down over the years. Yeah, im down to the precious few now. Do you miss any of them especially . Nancy giles will be starting us off the way sunday morning always starts off. Take note, theyre playing our song. Theres no mistaking our sunday morning theme music no matter how many different ways its been played over the years. But theres one particular version thats been instrumental to our success. You ready . Okay, shall we take it from the top . Yeah. Thats jazz legend wynton marsalis. [ trumpet playing ] his 2004 rendition has been trumpeting the start of our show every week for 15 years. [ trumpet playing ] do you remember what it was like that day they asked you to record the theme . Well, i remember i was honored to do it because the soul of the depth of the show is im honored to be to be a part of it in in any way. If if were going to record it again, let me know. Wynton marsalis, a young trumpet player ive never heard of. We first met marsalis back in 1983 [ trumpet playing ] when he was just 21 years old. Do that again. [ trumpet playing ] now, marsalis is the managing and artistic director of jazz at Lincoln Center in new york city [ trumpet playing ] along with being our goto trumpeter. When you hear every week you playing that rendition of the sunday morning theme, how how do you feel . I feel like im out of tune on some of the notes. [ laughter ] really . Yes, hes a perfectionist. 1, 2, 3, 4 did i start it wrong . That was clear enough when we sat down together at the piano for an impromptu duet. 18th century german composer Gottfried Reiche gets credit for writing the theme we use. Its called abblasen. And our original executive producer, shad northshield, gets some credit too; he decided it was a perfect fit. An old don smithers record did the trick at first until Johnny Carsons former band leader, doc severinsen, took it over in 1998. The speed of the notes is not a problem. Its to get them all in tune. And then came marsalis. So, youre carrying on that tradition . I and im im very happy to carry it on. Now that is music to our ears [ laughter ] excuse my piano playing, i apologize. All right, weve got it that wasnt bad. Yeah, i know you were great you were great i cant play piano. Nah, no. Pauley ahead other parts will rotate. It squeaks. It does squeak. Good morning, martha. Good morning, jane. Beauty, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. And when it comes to art, weve beheld much of the best. Id like to think that the paintings are as alive as i am. In 40 years, weve done about 1,000 art stories, depending on. He calls this one the money lisa. Can you believe they are made out of push pins . Weve done picasso a dozen times. Picassos blue period went on for what seems like a melancholy but productive three years. Our very first art story ive been playing around with them as a group. Featured Ellsworth Kelly stating the obvious. You know, contemporary work is very difficult, i mean, to a lot of people. Fast forward 30 years. Hed aged. There is a window up here. It shows pine trees, you know, and blue skies, and, you know, it say its like cezanne. On sunday morning, weve shown you cezanne and lots of his admirers. You could say weve gone from. Pissarro to bizarro. This is probably my most popular piece. More people wouldnt see this unless it was in a gallery somewhere. But rooting through our archives, whats really striking is how many of the artists weve showcased considered america their subject. For example, robert indiana. The subject matter is essentially american. Almost exclusively. Not only american even more, its autobiographical. From east this is philadelphia. So is this. Some of this citys most impressive artwork is out on the street. To west the ansel adams version. He won extravagant press. The best of the work is absolutely magical. Now, ed ruschas. I felt like there was a fo fertile happening out there with all these gas stations and i had to do something about it. Weve looked at our country in so many ways. This is the south tower. In new york city through cristo and jean claudes gates, and walker evans subway photographs, and mary whytes vanishing south. All of these people are living a life that i think is unique and important. Weve seen minority and Women Artists get famous. Becoming an artist is not empirical. So its not about hard work. That doesnt mean youre going to make it. And hows this for covering the bases . With his overthetop persona, kehinde wile has been compared to andy warhol. Ah, andy warhol. Weve profiled artists influenced by andy warhol, artists who painted andy warhol and six stories about andy warhol himself. Warhol was one of the first artists to look at the American Dream in all its facets. Its not just going out in the world and finding something that, you know, oh, i think ill do a soup can. Donna de salvo curated the recent warhol retrospective at new yorks Whitney Museum of american art. Its really looking and thinking and understanding something about this american landscape, american consumerism. I was always surprised they didnt do the tv diner. laughter in 1979, the year we went on the air, the whitney did a show of warhol portraits back then, trashed by the critics. They kind of crystallized what people always thought about him he just wanted money, that he just was obsessed with celebrity and fame. But what they missed, of course, was warhol as an artist and who warhol really was. You have just copied a common item. Yes. Why have you bothered to do that . Why not create something new . Because its easier to do. Once ridiculed for his paintedover photographs, for his silkscreen prints. Now . I think he is an artist who has really transcended. Hes not just a 20th century artist, hes a 21st century artist. He reflected something about the United States and wher
