3,600 confirmed cases of covid 19 in the bay area. A third of those are in hard hit Santa Clara County. The bay area is expected to reach its peak later this month, but will we building be ready . They are predicting we would not have shortages in regular or icu beds even at the peak. Reporter professor tara dion says early shelter in place orders may save californias Healthcare System from running out of beds, but cautions the system will still be under enormous strain. There is an issue of where those beds are and are they in the right place . So as a whole across the state, i think we probably have enough icu beds. The question is are they in the places where well have the patients coming in . Reporter shifting beds, equipment or patients around the state the professor says will be a huge logistical and administrative challenge and while the state has done what it can to slow the spread of the disease and flatten the curve, there may still be shortages looming of ventilators and other essential equipment like masks and face shields for nurses and doctors. Some hospitals have already begun to ration equipment hoping to extend dwindling stockpiles. I think the sooner we have information about how that affects the transmission of the virus and how dangerous exactly that is, getting that information to people so that they can feel a little bit less like every single choice they make is endangering their lives. Reporter devin fehely, kpix5. A bay area man died after being stuck for days on a coronavirus riddle the cruise ship off the florida coast. The coral princess docked at the miami port yesterday afternoon with two people dead on board. Wilson maa of South San Francisco died last night at a hospital. The family eventually called 911. They were able to get an ambulance to take him to the hospital, but by then it was too late. Wilsons daughter nancy posted this message on facebook on behalf of the family saying, we are so lucky to have a father that was so silly, fun, engineering minded and thoughtful. Fellow passenger took this photo of her being loaded onto an ambulance. Today the mayor of Miamidade County said hes working to get passengers off that ship as soon as he can. We continue to work at the port of miami to offload passengers and crew and get them to their homes as quickly as possible while also helping some very sick patients get the medical care that they need. At least a dozen people on the ship are infected with covid19. Princess cruises said today the new cdc requirements for disembarkation will unfortunately result in further delays getting everyone off the ship. Muni plans to cut bus service by 40 by the end of this week. The change is in response to low ridership during the coronavirus crisis. Service will be gradually cut back. Its unclear which bus lines will be impacted, but muni says it will prioritize heavily used routes and routes that pass by Grocery Stores and hospitals. Another issue is driver availability. Many drivers are over the age of 60. And beginning tomorrow the north bays smart train will also cut down its service as ridership continues to decline. The new weekday schedule will operate 16 trips daily at all stations until further notice. Smart had already cancerringed four weekday trips in mid march. All Weekend Service remains suspended. Retailers are ramping up their efforts to slow the spread of the virus while people shop for essential items. Kpix5s kenny cloy choi is in San Francisco to show us how people are passing the time in line. Reporter this long line at trader joes at high street and california, Grocery Stores like this one implemented policy changes weeks ago to make sure people are social distancing about six feet apart while they wait in line, but with the guidelines constantly changing major retailers like walmart and target starting this weekend have some new rules in place to make sure theyre controlling not only whats happening outside their stores, but inside as well. Lines at some stores are getting longer. Its taking a lot longer to get in today. Weve been in line i think almost a half hour. Reporter this line at trader joes on hyde street wrapped around the corner and down the street. Theres a reason theyre doing this. No one is getting mad. This has to happen. This is responsible. Reporter its a familiar sight at this location and Stores Across the country, but in this line here theres a special new sound. Night as well be walking on the sun. The thing i offer is positivity. Reporter Samuel Johnson left his usual spot in the embarcadero as stores close its doors there and is now seeing Something Different these days. Theres more positive than there is negative, but im just saying the impact on the human being, imagery, imagery. I think its cool that hes out here giving us something to kind of look at and be in this line for. Its nice. Music just brings people together anyway. So i love it. Its great. Thank you guys for being patient. Reporter major retailers like target, walmart and home depot this weekend implemented some new rules to customers in line and inside its stores. Everyones very polite. The associates seemed very nice and pleasant and, you know, were trying to go out of our way to be especially nice to them because theyre here for us. Reporter target will meter guest traffic and limit occupancy based on each of its 1,900 Stores Across the country. At this location on geary boulevard just 170 people were allowed inside at a time. When i usually come, its more crowded and we had to wait outside this time and theres like a lot less people. We went to the cash register. There was no one there really. So that was the difference. Reporter now walmart has some specific rules in place for how many people can be inside their Stores Starting this weekend. Its five people per 1,000 square feet of space. Thats roughly 20 of store capacity, another reason why youre seeing fewer people inside stores these days, some new National Numbers out for walmart, costco and target showing theres been a dip in task for the first time in many weeks. Thats a far different picture from what we saw in late march. In San Francisco, kenny choi, kpix5 news. Todays rain was even more impressive than yesterdays and theres more on tap for tomorrow. Lets go to darren with the latest on that. Were going to look at both because were not entirely done with tonights rain yet. Well look at that and ill talk to you about why tomorrows rain will be more interesting. First lets go to hidef doppler. This is for the south bay. Boy, did you catch up. Were pretty much seeing the showers begin to wind down now. There might be a few showers left over in Santa Clara County and even light snow falling in the diablo range, but as we play futurecast forward into tonight, thats over, nothing going on in the overnight hours here. Now watch what happens tomorrow down here. We just started to see another band of showers get rotated into the south bay from a weird direction, the southeast. That gets us into early afternoon. Watch what happens throughout the day tomorrow. More rain keeps getting pinwheeled towards us from the east. Well explain that later in the forecast, but bottom line, a chance for spotty, isolated showers, maybe even an isolated thunderstorm tomorrow. Its not going to be as widespread as today. We wont get as much rain as we did today, but were not done with this yet, still a few showers for tomorrow. The one other thing i want to point out is tomorrow morning is when we finally feel the cold air from this system. We bottomed out pretty much around 50 this morning for most locations. So most of us are going down into the low and mid40s tomorrow, but look at the north bay, 34. It was 48 degrees for the morning low in santa rosa today. Tomorrow its going to be 34, much colder. Find a heavy jacket. Keep the umbrella handy. Ill be back with more on the rest of the forecast coming up in a few minutes. Is. Of course, all the rain turned to snow in the mountains. Thats a look at the conditions in the sierra tonight, chain controls in effect for parts of 80 and highway 50 and caltrans is saying dont go up there unless its essential. Heres a look at what drivers who live there are dealing with. The video was taken near homewood resorts in the tahoe city area. Still to come, facemasks, do they really help . A bay area expert weighs in. Plus new video of a wild wrongway pursuit through the north bay, how authorities were able to slam the brakes on a suspected car thief. Meanwhile a very different kind of pursuit in one bay area neighborhood where deputies give a 3yearold boy a Birthday Party he will never forget. More proof that love conquers all even in the age of coronavirus, a San Francisco couple manages to get married in front of all of their guests, where else, online. What we do now will forever change our tomorrow. So lets do the right thing, today. Lets stay at home. Lets wash up. Lets always keep our distance please, six feet apart at least. Lets look after ourselves, as well as others. It will all be worth it. We can all do our part. So those on the front line can do their part. And when this is over, we will all, continue, to thrive. Silent ball yard, new video of a wild and dangerous chase in the north bay after Sonoma County deputies tried to stop a suspected car thief yesterday evening, the suspect leading deputies on the highway 101 in sonoma. He got off the freeway and began driving against traffic. Deputies called off the chase and got the departments chopper to track the driver into marin county and officers in novato laid down spike strips and brought it all to a screeching halt. The driver took off running into nearby brush, didnt get far, arrested minutes later. Now to our Better Together campaign, stories highlighting how the bay area is really coming together during the crisis. It is safe to say a little boy in the north bay will never forget his 3rd birthday. Thats the Sonoma CountySheriffs Department providing backup for henry as he patrolled the neighborhood in his Power Wheels Police cruiser. About a dozen deputies showed up with lights and sirens to give him a proper party. Happy birthday, henry wow, car chase of a lifetime. Marin county sheriffs lieutenant nina snyder came up with this idea to make life a little bit more comfortable for healthcare workers. She designed special headbands with buttons so the masks are not always tugging on their ears. Those are just some of the great things happening across the bay area right now. Weve seen teachers parading through neighborhoods to celebrate their students, tons of meals and treats delivered to healthcare workers and companies stepping up to manufacture and refurbish critical medical equipment. We invite you to post your good deeds with the kpix and check out www. Kpix. Com together to see all of the good things happening right now in the bay area. One good thing is the weather. Heres darren peck. Including the numbers im about to show you how we did for rain in the last 24 hours, so not just today. I showed that on kpix5 news at 5 00. This goes back for a 24 hour block. Look at san jose, almost an inch of rain. I know you just experienced that mainly through the course of this afternoon. Thats when most of that fell, but way to do on the catchup and tonight at 11 00 ill show you the grand tally where we are now for stephenal rainfall. Thats going to help. It wont make a huge dent. If we look at san jose and that number, look at live hidef doppler. Were just now finally starting to see those showers begin to come to an end down here for the south bay. If we look at this in a different way, look why the south bay got in on the act so much, the clouds. Were focusing the majority of the rain from the south bay down to our south bay, monterey, big sur, but that was today. Now look out here. Look at these two little spinning blobs of clouds. That is tomorrows rain. If we look at this in a slightly different way, you can see where the energy is. The brighter the clouds are, the higher the clouds are, thats where you get thunderstorms, where you get the high cloud tops. Now if we put it into futurecast, dont worry about this one. Watch those right there. This complex of scattered thunderstorms sitting off the coast is going to get rotated back our way and this is tomorrow. Its not till we get into the afternoon we started to notice these first down here in the south bay. Watching that pattern we just saw, now it makes sense why these are going to kind of get rotated like a pinwheel and appear to be coming at us from the east tomorrow. So its kind of unique, but in terms of what to expect from this out of the rain, it wont be all day rain like today was, but these will come in the form of isolated scattered thunderstorms and you can get brief little downpours out of this. If we look at rainfall totals, these numbers will not look as impressive tomorrow as the numbers i just showed you the last 24 hours. It appears to not be a big deal. In a scenario like this where you can get isolated thunderstorms, if you happen to get one of those right over you, you get a good brief little downpour in a short period of time and the number will be much larger than any number on this screen. Its just going to be really localized the way it plays out tomorrow. As far as daytime highs tomorrow, these are fine. Its the morning lows were going to feel. By the way, those are mondays daytime highs. Well be in the hope low 60s for many inland spots and upper 50s for much of the bay and by middle and late next week well start warming back up into the mid70s, sunshine and temperatures back a little above average for this time of year and well top out in the mid to upper 60s for daytime highs for much of the bay. Ill be back with more on the forecast coming up in the next half hour. For now back over to you.
