Taking it up a notch. When we close our streets to cars, we open them up for amazing possibilities. People all over oakland are walking and biking in streets that they normally would not. Right now, on the kpix news at 7 00, and streaming on cbsn bay area, scramming to stop an outbreak of the coronavirus at a large homeless shelter. We spoke to some city officials who say they saw this coming weeks ago. Reporter the shelter had two cases on sunday, five cases on wednesday, and now 70. An example of how quickly the vican spre people saw this coming. An outbreak has occurred in mse south, one of our shelters. 70 people. 68 members of the shelter, as well as two Staff Members who have tested positive for covid 19. Reporter the largest shelter in San Francisco is now functioning as a ward for the infected, with medical staff on men of them have Chronic Health conditions, and are vulnerable to getting very sick, or even dying from coronavirus. Reporter the announcement of the outbreak comes after a weeks long dispute over how to best shelter the citys homeless. We need to move people into hotels now. It is absolutely inevitable were going to have outbreaks in all of the shelters. It was inevitable. It was also preventable. A month ago, i was yelling and screaming and demanding of them to move these people out of that environment. Reporter supervisor matt haney warns the outbreha implicationsd yoinis about unhoused or homeless people, youve got it wrong. People who are unhoused and homeless interact regularly with people who are not, in the potential for this to spread from large crowded shelters to the street, to people who are housed, to impact people who are close to you and me and who we know is huge. Reporter that possibility now has the city doing detective work to figure out what kind of spread the outbreak might be causing beyond shelter doors. This is a 24hour roundthe clock operation, and the situation and numbers are changing. Reporter 71 people have tested negative from the shelter. They have been moved away from it now as the investigation goes on into how many more people might have been infected by this outbreak. Those who are infected will remain in that shelter being presided over my by medical staff. A dead through outbreak at a hayward nursing home. Nine seniors have guide is tonight were getting our first comments from officials. The Alameda County Public Health Department Says 32 other seniors and 25 Staff Members have tested positive. It learned of the first positive case around march 24th, but the public and family members found out about the outbreak and deaths just a few days ago on the news. The county blames a lack of communication on gateway. From the very beginning, when we first heard about the first case, to say you need to communicate to the families of this facility. Can you guys just take over that facility . I dont think we have the authority to do that. The state has cited gate way and other Nursing Homes run by the owner multiple times. Its also denied the owners application to operate new facilities. Meantime, tonight a woman whose husband died at the Gateway Center said she is still a trying to get some answers. The last time i spoke to him he was fine. He said i just want to get outta here and get some of your coffee, hon. That was one of the last conversations we had. Co sell moved into the facility for federal therapy. He was diagnosed with covid19 on march 21st, along with six other people. His wife says that she struggled to get information up until he died six days ago, and is still now being left in the dark. Its true nightmare. This is inexcusable. Its unforgivable. Its unforgivable. So help me, im 86 years old, and im going to fight with every bit of my energy for this never to happen again to february anybody. Gateway released a statement say we go appreciate the opportunity to care for our residents in these very difficult times, and are doing everything in our power to keep them safe, healthy, and protected from the spread of this disease.
