Frtz reporter the governor says california is ahead of schedule in securing hotel rooms for the homeless. And today he was joined by a bay area mayor who calls this a longterm solution. Were at a site of a molt 6 here in clair county. The reason were sheer to mark an important milestone. Reporter with nearly 11,000 rooms secured plus a new 5,000room deal with motel 6, Governor Newsom is now ahead of the goal. He said two weeks ago, it is called project room key. 1,123 rooms. That can be available now for those covid19 positive individuals, those Homeless Individuals who are vulnerable to come in from the cold. Reporter part of the appeal for mayors is that they dont carry much of the cost. Getting that 75 reimbursement from fema. Reporter but there have been challenges. Cities and counties have struggled to find the staffing required to manage the hotels. We are in process of identifying and offering hotel rooms for our vulnerable persons. I can say not all of them have accepted our offer to move to the hotel room. Reporter some say the governor is moving too slowly. We announced this two weeks ago. Respectfully, i sthng a rather heroic effort. Reporter the governor has also called this a path toward romping the states preexisting crisis. We dont want these rooms simply open for a few weeks or months. Lets give counties and cities the dollars they need to purchase motels so we can really aggressively address the homelessness crisisond te that this pandemic passes. Reporter there has been some pushback, specifically in southern california. And today without naming names, the governor called out those local governments. He said those leaders would be found on the wrong side of history. The state assembly is holding its first subcommittee budget meeting next week in response to the covid19 crisis. The governor expects the bill to total at least 7 billion. Developing news in the east bay. A Deadly Police shooting outside a San Leandro Walmart that happened about 3 00 pm this afternoon on hesperia boulevard. Two reports of a man swinging a bat. They tried to use tazers to subdue him. A South San Francisco restaurant has been donating meals to front line workers despite a 90 drop in business. The owner of hula hoops says shes had to jump through a lot of hoops herself to apply for the federal paycheblg protection program. The Paycheck Protection Program. So far the county has contributed 3 million to the fund. It has also partnered with local Companies Including gilliad and facebook to raise funds for Small Businesses. Small businesses in santa clara are also scrambling to get financial assistance. And in just a matter of hours, 250 of them applied for a Small Business grant offered by the city. Up to 500,000 is being offered in the form of 5,000 grants for essential businesses and 10,000 grants for nonessential businesses. Grants will be awarded to qualified applicants on a first come, first served basis. Professors at cal are watching a major study to better understand coronavirus carriers who did not show any symptoms. The professors will enlist 5,000 east bay residents for the study. Participants will be given hometesting kits over the course of several minutes. The professors hope the results will shed light on how many people have the virus but show no signs of it. At the same time, ucsf is offering free covid19 testing to counties across the state. The University Says it will use a new lab. They can process 2,600 samples a day. The results can be provided in as little as fwourz. 24 hours. The new labs double the testing capacity. And they are happy to share their resources with the states 58 Public Health departments.
